YouTube’s own membership notifications serve a different purpose: they notify members about certain members-only content and scheduled events, not all viewers with a repeating creator-written chat prompt. For a 24/7 stream, set a timer interval and an activity threshold that suit your chat, then verify that the bot can join and post during a public live broadcast.
Choose the right kind of membership reminder
There are two separate tools to distinguish. A chatbot timer posts a message you write in live chat at an interval, subject to its settings and activity conditions. YouTube’s membership notifications are sent to members about certain members-only posts, videos and live streams; members can adjust their notification preferences. Those notifications do not replace a creator-authored recurring prompt. YouTube Help: Use and manage your channel membership benefits.

YouTube also supports a live event transition from public to members-only with a countdown and viewer notification. This is an event-based promotion workflow: the documented transition is scheduled while already live, and a members-only stream cannot be scheduled in advance as such. Set up a recurring reminder with StreamElements
- Connect the chatbot and prepare the live stream. StreamElements’ YouTube support instructions require the channel’s stream to be public and live for the bot to join, and direct the creator to add StreamElements as a moderator in YouTube Studio. Follow its current setup instructions at StreamElements Chatbot on YouTube.
- Open the StreamElements chatbot timer dashboard. Add a timer, give it a clear name, write the chat message, set the online interval in minutes, and activate it. See StreamElements’ Timers documentation and Getting Started with the Chatbot for the documented controls.
- Set the recent-chat condition deliberately. Timers can require a minimum number of chat messages during the last five minutes and support other conditions. This guard helps avoid posting into an inactive chat, but it also means an interval alone does not guarantee a message. On a 24/7 channel, account for overnight or otherwise quiet hours when deciding whether the threshold is appropriate.
- Use concise, accurate wording. Invite viewers to select Join on the channel, or link to the channel’s own membership page. Say membership is optional. Mention a perk only if the channel actually offers it; do not imply that joining changes access to the public stream unless you have configured that change.
- Verify the message in a public live broadcast. Check that the bot joined and that the reminder appears in chat. StreamElements notes that YouTube’s Top chat may hide bot messages, so use Live chat while checking. Test under real chat activity, then revisit the threshold if the reminder does not appear.

Replace the bracketed text with a valid link or direct viewers to the channel’s Join button. Keep the message factual and brief; a timer that repeats too often can make the viewing experience feel intrusive.
Nightbot is another documented timer option
Nightbot’s timer settings let you configure an interval and a chat-line requirement. Its documentation also says its YouTube bot joins only when the channel is live and public. It is a reasonable alternative if you already use Nightbot, but its timer should likewise be checked against the channel’s actual chat activity. See Nightbot’s General Setup documentation.

Manage memberships and measure the program in YouTube Studio
Use YouTube Studio’s Memberships tab to manage the membership program and review member information; Analytics helps measure it. YouTube says that when someone joins while the creator is offline, it does not notify the creator, so check the Memberships tab rather than relying on an alert. See YouTube Help: Analyze and manage your channel memberships program.
If you enable members-only live chat on a public stream, the public can still watch while only members can send chat messages. That setting controls chat access, not the recurrence or delivery of a membership reminder. Instructions are in YouTube Help on channel membership settings.

Troubleshoot reminders that do not appear
- The bot never joins: Confirm the broadcast is public and live, and that the bot has been added as a moderator as required by StreamElements’ YouTube setup. A private stream or an offline channel does not meet the documented join requirement.
- The timer is active but does not post: Check the recent-chat message threshold and any other timer conditions. If the threshold was not met, the timer may stay silent; adjust it for the channel’s quieter periods and verify with actual chat.
- You cannot see the bot’s message: Switch YouTube chat from Top chat to Live chat, which StreamElements recommends when checking its bot setup.
- The message appears too often or feels repetitive: Revisit the interval and the activity threshold, and shorten the copy. The interval is a setting, not a guarantee that the message will only be seen once by each viewer.
- You expected YouTube to remind everyone automatically: Native notifications are for members and eligible members-only content or events, not a recurring all-viewer chat prompt. Use a bot timer for the latter.
