The message means the player loaded but could not obtain, select, or decode a playable media stream. It is a generic player error—not proof that the video was deleted, your internet is broken, or DRM is involved. Use the tests below to identify whether the fault is your session, browser, network, access rights, or the website.
Start with the fastest diagnostic
First determine whether the problem is local or tied to one video. Test another video on the same site, then try the failing video in a private or incognito window.

Fixes in the right order

Reload, then hard-refresh
Close duplicate tabs and reload the page containing the player. On Windows or Linux press
Ctrl+Shift+R(orCtrl+F5); on macOS pressCommand+Shift+R. This can replace an incomplete player script, stale manifest, expired session, or failed request. Mozilla documents cache-bypass refresh troubleshooting at support.mozilla.org. -
Use a private window
Open the same page privately. If it works there, an extension, cookie, cached player file, login session, or browser customization is the leading suspect. If it still fails, continue with browser, network, DRM, and source checks.

Pause extensions for this site
Temporarily disable ad blockers, tracking or script blockers, privacy/security tools, download helpers, video enhancers, and browser antivirus add-ons for the affected site. Reload after each meaningful change; if playback returns, re-enable them one at a time. Restore protection after testing. Mozilla identifies content-blocking features and extensions as possible causes: support.mozilla.org.

Clear only the affected site’s data
Prefer site-specific cookies and cached files instead of resetting the whole browser. In Firefox use Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data (or Clear Data). In Edge use Settings and more → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data. Chrome’s Clear browsing data controls likewise allow site data to be removed; labels can vary by version. Clearing cookies may sign you out and remove preferences.

Try another updated browser
Test a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or supported Safari release. If only one browser fails, investigate its profile, extensions, codec path, hardware acceleration, and protected-content settings. If all browsers fail, replacing the browser is unlikely to help. Microsoft lists unsupported formats, missing codec extensions, disabled acceleration, autoplay policy, and encrypted-media problems among Edge playback causes: learn.microsoft.com.

Update and restart the browser
Install pending updates, fully quit the browser, and reopen it. Newer media APIs, codec components, and DRM fixes can matter. Do not assume a particular version or menu label is current without checking the browser’s own update screen.

Check protected-content settings
Subscription services may require DRM. In Edge, open Settings → Site permissions → All permissions → Protected content IDs and ensure Allow sites to play protected content is enabled; do not disable identifiers if the service requires them. Edge users can inspect
edge://componentsfor the Widevine Content Decryption Module. Microsoft’s guidance is at learn.microsoft.com and its playback diagnostics. Do not bypass DRM or access restrictions. -
Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy
Turn it off, reload, and test again. VPNs and proxies can change geographic routing, IP reputation, CDN selection, and authentication. A successful test points to routing or the service’s access policy, not necessarily a damaged video. One troubleshooting overview discusses VPN/proxy effects at dvdfab.cn.

Try another network
Use a phone hotspot or non-corporate Wi-Fi. If playback works there, investigate router or DNS filtering, school or workplace firewalls, antivirus web protection, ISP restrictions, or VPN configuration. Do not defeat an administrator’s policy; ask the network operator.

Check for a service incident
Look for the provider’s status page and announcements, and see whether unrelated videos also fail. Persistent failure across clean browsers, devices, and networks usually indicates a broken source or manifest, expired signed URL, missing encode, CDN/origin outage, incorrect embed, entitlement failure, or regional restriction. The site owner may be the only party able to repair it.

Why the player reports “no valid sources”
A player may use a direct file or adaptive streaming. With Media Source Extensions, JavaScript assembles media from chunks. The browser must also recognize the declared MIME type and codecs; HTMLMediaElement.canPlayType() returns only probably, maybe, or an empty result, not a guarantee of successful playback. Encrypted streams additionally require a supported Content Decryption Module and valid license exchange. Different players use the same wording for source, codec, access, script, and DRM failures, so no single cause is universal.
Advanced diagnosis
Developer Tools
- Open Developer Tools, select Console and Network, then reload.
- Filter requests for
m3u8,mpd,mp4,media,manifest, orlicense. - Interpret results cautiously: 403 can indicate authorization, token, origin/referrer, region, or IP policy; 404 often means a missing source; 5xx indicates server/CDN trouble; blocked or canceled requests suggest an extension, policy, filter, or script issue; a successful manifest followed by decode errors points toward codec, hardware, or DRM; failed license requests indicate protected-content entitlement trouble.
Edge diagnostic pages
For support or IT work, Edge exposes edge://media-internals, edge://gpu, edge://components, edge://policy, and edge://settings/help. Microsoft describes these tools at learn.microsoft.com.
Mobile and access-related cases
On phones and tablets, playback can differ because of operating-system codecs, hardware decoding, data-saving modes, content-blocking or VPN apps, and a provider’s requirement to use its native app. On iPhone and iPad, changing browsers does not necessarily change the underlying system media constraints. A video can also be unavailable because of country, subscription tier, login, age verification, expired rights, or device limits; browser changes cannot grant missing entitlement. A poster that will not autoplay may reflect autoplay policy, whereas an explicit “no valid sources” message prioritizes source, access, decoding, or DRM checks.
If you manage the video site
- Verify the file URL, manifest, renditions, and required codecs.
- Confirm correct
Content-Type, CORS headers, and referrer/origin rules. - Check signed-URL expiration, authentication, and geographic or account entitlements.
- Inspect origin, CDN, and license-server logs for failed requests.
- Test the embed in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile.
- Review recent consent, advertising, security, or player changes that may block media requests.

Stop resetting your browser when the same video fails in a private window, another current browser, another device, and another network. Send the site owner the video URL, your country, account or subscription status, browser and operating-system versions, exact time of failure, whether other videos work, and a screenshot or relevant Network error. This gives the owner enough context to check the source, CDN, entitlement, or outage.
