If Disney+ will not load or play over Wi‑Fi, first find out whether the problem is the service, your home network, or one device. Test another app on the same device, try Disney+ on another device using the same Wi‑Fi, then compare with a phone hotspot. Those checks point you toward the right fix before you change settings or buy equipment.
This guide reflects Disney+ troubleshooting guidance available in 2026. Menu names vary by device and software version, and not every older TV or streaming device remains supported.
First: identify where the problem is
Run these quick tests before changing router settings:
- On the affected device, open another streaming app or website.
- Try Disney+ on a second device connected to the same Wi‑Fi.
- If possible, connect the affected device to a phone hotspot or try Disney+ over cellular data.
- Check Disney+ support channels and your internet provider’s outage information. An individual playback problem does not prove that Disney+ is down.
| What you find | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Disney+ and other services fail on several devices | Wi‑Fi, router, modem, ISP, or a wider internet outage. |
| Other services work, but Disney+ fails on several devices on your Wi‑Fi | Possible Disney+ service or account issue, DNS/content filtering, VPN, or ISP routing problem. |
| Disney+ fails on one device but works on another using the same Wi‑Fi | Focus on that device’s app, software, compatibility, cache, or—on a TV setup—HDMI/DRM. |
| Disney+ works on a hotspot but not your home Wi‑Fi | Focus on the home router, Wi‑Fi coverage, network filtering, VPN, DNS, or ISP routing. |
| Disney+ works on Wi‑Fi but not cellular data | Check mobile-data restrictions, cellular coverage, and the device’s mobile-network settings. |
Wi‑Fi and internet access are not the same thing: a device can show a strong Wi‑Fi signal while the modem’s connection to the internet is unstable. Disney describes this distinction in its Error 42 guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
1. Check the connection and available speed
- Confirm the device is connected to the intended Wi‑Fi network and that other websites or apps load.
- Disconnect from Wi‑Fi and reconnect. If other devices are affected too, test one near the router.
- Run a speed test on the device or in the room where you watch—not only on a computer beside the router. Test again if the problem comes and goes.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, and other streams; temporarily disconnect devices you do not need.
- Move closer to the router. If your router offers both bands, try 5 GHz nearby; 2.4 GHz may reach farther through walls, though real performance depends on your equipment and surroundings.
- If the TV or streaming box supports it, test Ethernet. A cable removes Wi‑Fi coverage and interference from the diagnosis, but cannot fix an ISP outage, account issue, or Disney+ problem.
Disney’s published recommendations are 5 Mbps for HD, 8 Mbps for live content, and 25 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are recommended speeds, not a guarantee: interference, packet loss, latency, network congestion, and simultaneous use can still disrupt playback. A fast speed test does not rule out those problems. See Disney’s recommended speeds and connection troubleshooting. Don’t upgrade your internet plan based on one low test; first establish whether the bottleneck is Wi‑Fi, congestion, equipment, or the ISP.
2. Fully close Disney+ and restart the device
- Exit Disney+ completely. If your device has a recent-apps list or force-stop option, close it there too.
- Restart the streaming device—not just the app—and open Disney+ again.
- Test a title that previously played. If only one title fails, note that when contacting support; the issue may not be your Wi‑Fi.
On phones and tablets, force-close the app and restart the device. On a smart TV, use its restart or power-off control if available; standby may not fully reboot it. Fire TV and Android TV users can force-stop the app. Roku, Apple TV, PlayStation, and Xbox have their own restart or app-quit controls; labels vary by model and software. Disney’s app troubleshooting guidance includes closing and reopening, checking other apps, updates, cache, and reinstalling.
3. Power-cycle the modem and router in order
A normal reboot is reversible; it is not a factory reset. Do not press a router’s reset button unless you intend to erase its configuration.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Close Disney+ and turn off or unplug the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router from power. If they are a single combined unit, unplug that unit.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Plug in the modem first. Wait until its online or internet indicator settles.
- Plug in the router and wait for Wi‑Fi to return.
- Restart the streaming device, reopen Disney+, and test playback.
Disney recommends restarting the modem, router, and device in that order. If the modem cannot establish a stable connection afterward, contact your ISP rather than repeatedly resetting equipment.
4. Update the app, device, or browser
Install any available Disney+ app update and check for updates to the device’s operating system or firmware. This applies to TVs, streaming sticks, consoles, phones, tablets, and computers. An update cannot make an unsupported older device compatible, so check Disney’s current device requirements if your model is old.
For browser playback, update to a supported browser and confirm that JavaScript and cookies are enabled. Disney lists the latest Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera on Windows 10 or newer; the latest Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on macOS 11 or newer; and the latest Chrome on ChromeOS. Consult Disney’s browser requirements for current details.

If the problem remains, you can try Clear Data, knowing you may need to sign in again.
- Android TV: Open Settings → Applications → Disney+, then choose the available cache or data-clearing option.
- Browser: Clear DisneyPlus.com’s site data, cache, or cookies. This can sign you out and remove saved site preferences. If a blank screen persists, temporarily disable extensions or content blockers, check JavaScript and cookies, and test a private window or another supported browser.
- Apple TV and many other TVs or streaming devices: There may be no separate cache control. Restarting or uninstalling and reinstalling the app may be the available route.
For device-specific steps, use Disney’s cache instructions; options vary by platform and location.
6. Test VPNs, proxies, and network filters
Temporarily turn off a VPN app or router-level VPN, proxy, Smart DNS service, or IP anonymizer, then fully restart Disney+ and test again. This is especially relevant to Error 73, which Disney associates with location availability and VPN or IP-anonymizer use. A VPN can change the apparent location of your connection; it is not a way to resolve regional availability. See Disney’s Error 73 guidance.

Also consider whether your router or network uses Pi-hole, AdGuard Home, NextDNS, ad blocking, parental controls, threat filtering, or custom firewall rules. These can block services a streaming app needs. As a temporary diagnostic, disable the relevant filter, reconnect the device, and test Disney+. If that fixes it, consult the filter provider’s current allow-list documentation rather than leaving protections off. Don’t use a generic list of domains: service and content-delivery domains can change.
If you change custom DNS as a test, record the original settings and restore them if there is no improvement. A DNS change may help with a resolver problem, but it does not increase internet speed and can affect privacy, parental controls, filtering, or local network behavior. On hotel, school, office, apartment, or public Wi‑Fi, a sign-in portal or network restriction may be the cause; contact the network administrator or use an authorized alternative connection.

8. If it fails only on a TV or external display
If the app opens but video will not play—or the failure occurs only in 4K or HDR—check the display connection as well as Wi‑Fi:
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable; try another HDMI port.
- Temporarily remove a receiver, switch, or splitter from the connection.
- Test the TV’s built-in Disney+ app, if available, or test the streaming device on another display.
- Update the TV and streaming device.
Disney says external components need to support high-bandwidth digital content and that an external display needs HDCP 2.2 for 4K UHD and HDR. These checks matter when protected video playback fails; HDMI is not a likely explanation for an app that cannot connect to Wi‑Fi at all. See Disney’s streaming troubleshooting.
What common Disney+ errors suggest
- Error 42: Disney reports difficulty connecting to the internet. Check connection stability and Wi‑Fi, relaunch the app, power-cycle the modem and router, and compare your connection with Disney’s speed recommendations. Disney’s Error 42 help.
- Error 73: Content may be unavailable in the detected location. Check VPNs, proxies, travel or regional availability, and possible IP-location errors. If it continues on your home connection after location tools are off, ask Disney or your ISP to investigate. Disney’s Error 73 help.
- Error 75: The account has exceeded the allowed number of simultaneous streams. This is not a Wi‑Fi fault. Stop streams on other devices and review Manage Devices in account settings; remove unfamiliar devices or log out where appropriate. Disney’s Error 75 help.
- Error 83: This is a broad error, not proof that your Wi‑Fi is bad. Restart, update, clear cache or data, confirm the device is supported, and test another network. Contact Disney+ if it persists.
- Blank screen or spinning wheel: Fully close and reopen the app or browser, update it, and clear relevant cache or site data. In a browser, temporarily test without extensions or content blockers and verify JavaScript and cookies.
When to contact your ISP or Disney+
Contact your ISP if several devices and services fail, Ethernet also fails, the modem repeatedly loses its connection, or repeated speed and stability tests show a problem. Share whether the issue affects wired devices as well as Wi‑Fi, when it began, and the results of hotspot testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
