A black screen in a Linode-hosted YouTube loop stream can come from the source video, FFmpeg, the VPS-to-YouTube connection, YouTube ingest, or playback. Compare the video FFmpeg produces with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview first; that tells you which boundary to investigate instead of changing settings at random.
Find where the picture disappears
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview and record the exact stream-health message and the time it appeared. YouTube’s dashboard provides health messages and performance metrics, and its encoder guidance recommends checking the preview before starting and monitoring video quality (YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
- Inspect what the encoder actually produces. Play the source file, then inspect FFmpeg’s output or a local recording of the outgoing stream if you have one. If that output is black, investigate the file, playlist, selected input, filters, or encoding process. YouTube also recommends checking the sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive (YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
- Compare the result with YouTube’s preview. If the local output has a picture but the Live Control Room preview does not, focus on the stream URL and key, output format, ingest, and outbound network path. If YouTube’s preview has a picture but the public watch page does not, investigate playback, access, or the viewer’s device.
These checks narrow the likely fault; a black screen alone does not identify its root cause.
Check FFmpeg’s source and output
Confirm the input and playlist
- Verify that the configured input file or playlist exists at the path used by the running service.
- Check that the Linux account running FFmpeg can read the files and any directories in their paths.
- Confirm that the playlist points to the intended video and that the selected input is not an empty or unintended stream.
- Play the source independently. A valid-looking filename does not establish that the file contains a visible picture throughout.
Inspect logs and video frames
Review recent FFmpeg output for errors opening inputs, decoding streams, applying filters, or writing encoded video. Confirm that the process is producing video frames, not merely remaining alive or sending audio. A process can exist while its input or output is unusable. If you have a local archive, check whether its picture is visible; YouTube recommends inspecting such a recording when troubleshooting encoder output (YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
A community operations note describes a separate case where a YouTube stream appeared frozen despite healthy server-side indicators and an audio demuxer error was eventually identified. That is an anecdote, not evidence that an audio error explains your black screen; it is a reminder that a healthy-looking process is not conclusive (OBS Project forum discussion).

Verify YouTube’s stream URL, key, and format
Compare the current URL and key
Copy the current stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and compare them with the values configured for the Linode-hosted encoder. YouTube’s setup instructions require both values (Set up your encoder for live streaming). If the key was reset or exposed, replace the configured key with the current one and keep it secret; do not publish it in logs, screenshots, or support posts.
Use the health message to decide whether to change codecs
For YouTube’s specific “incorrect stream format” error, its documented video and audio codecs are H.264 and AAC (YouTube encoder troubleshooting). A black picture by itself does not prove a codec mismatch. Check the actual FFmpeg output and Live Control Room message before re-encoding, so you do not introduce a new problem while addressing an unrelated fault.

Check the Linode process and service
After confirming the source and output, check whether the VPS service is running the intended command and has access to its files. If systemd manages the loop, inspect the unit’s status and recent journal entries; then review FFmpeg’s own recent logs. Look for a missing input, permission error, repeated restart, or a process that runs without producing video frames.
Linode’s RTMP guide demonstrates checking service status and describes an example streaming architecture. It dates from 2021, so use it for the operational idea rather than assuming its package versions or endpoints match a current setup (Linode RTMP guide).

Test the VPS outbound connection
If local output is visible but YouTube’s preview is not, examine the VPS’s upload path. Download speed does not establish upload capacity. YouTube recommends allowing 20% above the total stream-bitrate requirement; this is a recommendation, not a measured performance statistic (YouTube encoder troubleshooting). If the encoder appears healthy while the remote preview or viewers have trouble, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also points to the outbound connection (YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
Do not upgrade or change VPS providers as a first response to a black screen. First establish that the source, FFmpeg output, service, and YouTube ingest are working, then determine whether the outbound connection is actually limiting the stream.

Verify the stream end to end
- Check that the Live Control Room preview shows the intended picture and note the stream-health status.
- Open the channel or watch page and confirm the stream is accessible there.
- Check from a separate viewer device, including a mobile device, and compare its result with the preview.
- Continue monitoring audio and video quality while the loop runs. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and verifying access through channel/watch pages and mobile (YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
Common black-screen cases and what to check
| What you see | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The source file or local FFmpeg output is black. | Check the file, playlist entry, input selection, filters, decoding errors, and whether FFmpeg is producing video frames. |
| Local output has a picture, but YouTube’s preview is black. | Compare the current YouTube stream URL and key, read the exact health message, verify the actual output format, and investigate the VPS outbound path. |
| YouTube’s preview has a picture, but the public watch page does not. | Verify that the stream is accessible on the channel/watch page and compare playback on another viewer device. |
| The service looks active but there is no visible output. | Inspect recent FFmpeg logs, systemd status and journal if applicable, input-file access, and whether the process is writing video frames. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an FFmpeg/systemd loop on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded-video YouTube stream live. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. It supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
A managed service changes who operates the streaming process; it does not repair a corrupt source file or replace a revoked YouTube key. Start StreamNeo’s free first day.
