Five Nights at Freddy’s, usually shortened to FNaF, is a horror franchise created by Scott Cawthon. It began with a small 2014 survival-horror game about a night guard trapped inside Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and grew into a multi-branch universe of games, books, films, graphic novels, and licensed collectibles.
The best way to understand FNaF is to separate its branches. The games establish the central interactive mythology, the books explore related or reinterpreted mysteries, and the films create their own adaptation continuity. They share names, ideas, locations, and imagery, but they should not be treated as one perfectly linear story.
What is Five Nights at Freddy’s?
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s launched on Steam on August 18, 2014. Scott Cawthon developed and published the game, which places the player in the role of a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
During the day, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza resembles a cheerful family restaurant populated by singing animatronic mascots. At night, Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and the other performers become dangerous. The player usually cannot freely explore the building. Instead, survival depends on watching security cameras, checking lights, operating security doors, and managing a limited supply of electricity.

That restriction is the original game’s central design idea: the player has information, but never enough safety. Cameras reveal movement, doors provide protection, and lights expose threats, yet every action consumes a resource or leaves another entrance less carefully monitored. Surviving until morning is therefore a matter of observation, timing, prioritization, and learning the behavior of each animatronic.
The jump scare is the immediate punishment for failure, but the deeper appeal comes from the contrast between the restaurant’s child-friendly appearance and its threatening after-hours reality. FNaF established a version of “mascot horror” built around familiar entertainment spaces, surveillance interfaces, hidden backstories, and the fear that something designed to perform for children is no longer under human control.
How the franchise expanded beyond the first game
FNaF did not remain a single-room camera-survival experiment. Later games changed the scale, viewpoint, and format while retaining recurring ideas: animatronic characters, unsafe entertainment venues, surveillance, corporate secrets, and stories revealed indirectly through environments and fragments of evidence.
| Title or branch | Format and role | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Five Nights at Freddy’s | Original Steam game, released August 18, 2014 | Camera monitoring, limited electricity, security doors and lights, and survival against hostile animatronics. |
| Help Wanted | Modern game in the Steel Wool era | A collection of classic and original mini-games set in the Five Nights universe, helping translate the series’ ideas into a more varied and immersive format. |
| Help Wanted 2 | Follow-up game in the modern catalogue | Continues the virtual-reality-oriented side of the franchise. Exact platform support should be checked for the edition being purchased. |
| Security Breach | Larger exploratory game | Moves the action into Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex, a much larger venue than the compact restaurant of the original game. |
| Security Breach — Ruin | Free story DLC for Security Breach | Follows Cassie as she enters the abandoned Pizzaplex to find Gregory. The official PlayStation listing gives its release date as July 25, 2023. |
| Secret of the Mimic | Major Steel Wool title | Steel Wool’s official material reports a June 13, 2025 release, a Steam PC VR version dated April 28, 2026, and Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch availability from December 16, 2025. |
Steel Wool Studios’ official catalogue identifies Help Wanted, Help Wanted 2, Security Breach, Ruin, and Secret of the Mimic as important parts of the modern game era. The original game, meanwhile, remains available on Steam through its official store listing.

A game may have a PC version, console port, downloadable content, or virtual-reality edition without every version offering the same experience. Store pages should be checked for region, edition, required base game, VR support, and whether DLC is included. Ruin is best described as downloadable story content rather than as a separately priced mainline sequel.

The original game creates pressure through confinement. The player sits in a security office and turns limited visibility into a survival tool. The room is small, but the player’s attention is divided among several possible threats. Every camera check and defensive action has an opportunity cost.
Help Wanted broadens that foundation into a collection of classic and new mini-games. Its format allows FNaF to revisit familiar scenarios while experimenting with different interactions and viewpoints. The virtual-reality branch also makes the franchise’s interfaces and environments feel more immediate, although not every FNaF title requires a VR headset.

Security Breach changes the question from “Which entrance is threatened?” to “Where can I go, and what is searching for me?” The Mega Pizzaplex gives the series a more exploratory structure, with a large entertainment complex replacing the original game’s compact security office as the main setting.
Ruin uses that same location after it has become abandoned. Cassie’s search for Gregory gives the DLC a more focused objective, while the damaged Pizzaplex changes the meaning of the bright, commercial space seen in Security Breach. Because it is free story DLC for that game, it is most useful to approach it after experiencing the relevant Security Breach story.
Why FNaF lore is difficult to follow
FNaF’s story is not delivered as a conventional sequence of fully explained cutscenes. It is assembled from minigames, environmental details, character appearances, repeated imagery, hidden messages, altered versions of familiar locations, and clues whose significance may not become apparent until much later.
That structure encourages investigation, but it also creates genuine ambiguity. A visual detail may be a deliberate clue, a callback, a reinterpretation, or simply a design connection. Character identities and motives can be debated, and later releases can add information without resolving every earlier question.

There is also no single interchangeable FNaF continuity. The major branches include:
- Game continuity: the original game series and later releases developed by Scott Cawthon or, in the modern era, Steel Wool Studios.
- The original novel trilogy: The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones, and The Fourth Closet.
- Fazbear Frights: an anthology line of horror novellas.
- Tales from the Pizzaplex: another anthology line connected to the Pizzaplex era.
- Graphic novels: visual adaptations including The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones, and The Fourth Closet.
- Film continuity: a separate adaptation branch produced by Blumhouse and distributed by Universal.
- Reference and activity publications: guidebooks, encyclopedias, logbooks, cookbooks, coloring books, and other licensed products.
A recurring name or concept does not automatically make an event from one branch a confirmed event in another. The books may expand or reinterpret the franchise’s mysteries, while the films adapt the game series rather than reproduce every game event. A careful explanation should always identify which continuity it is discussing.
Five Nights at Freddy’s books: where should you begin?
The book branch is large enough that “the FNaF books” can mean several very different reading experiences. Scholastic’s official franchise material includes novels, anthology series, graphic novels, guidebooks, a survival logbook, an official cookbook, coloring books, and movie tie-in novels.
| If you want… | Start with… | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A continuous narrative | The original novel trilogy | Begin with The Silver Eyes, followed by The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet. Treat this as its own novel continuity rather than a direct transcription of the games. |
| Shorter pieces of horror | Fazbear Frights | An anthology format with separate horror stories from different corners of the FNaF world. |
| Pizzaplex-era stories | Tales from the Pizzaplex | Another anthology line associated with the era and imagery introduced by the Mega Pizzaplex. |
| Visual versions of the novels | The graphic novel adaptations | A more accessible visual route through stories including The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones, and The Fourth Closet. |
| Names, designs, and lore reference | The Ultimate Guide or the Character Encyclopedia | Reference material for readers who want organized information rather than another horror narrative. These books do not eliminate every disputed interpretation. |
| Interactive or lifestyle material | The survival logbook, cookbook, or coloring books | Activity and gift-oriented products rather than a substitute for the main narrative lines. |
| The film story in print | The official movie novel and sequel movie novel | Film-related reading that belongs to the movie branch, not automatically to game continuity. |
For readers comparing editions or building a collection, Five Nights at Freddy’s books are easiest to choose by purpose: a novel or anthology for narrative horror, a graphic novel for visual adaptation, and a guidebook or logbook for lore-oriented exploration. Scholastic’s listings generally position the franchise’s books for readers around grade 7 and above, with many individual listings marked for ages 12 and up. Those labels are useful guidance, not a universal guarantee that every story will suit every reader; horror intensity and subject matter vary by title.

The first film adaptation was produced by Blumhouse and distributed by Universal. It follows Mike, a troubled young man who accepts a night-security job at an abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria while trying to retain custody of his younger sister. Emma Tammi directed the film, with Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon serving as producers.
The film uses the recognizable FNaF setup—an overnight job, a neglected restaurant, and animatronic characters—but it is not simply a filmed version of the original game. It has its own plot structure and adaptation choices. The film branch should therefore be discussed on its own terms.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was released theatrically on December 5, 2025, according to Universal’s official film page. Emma Tammi returned as director, and Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon again served as producers. The film sequel’s title should not be confused with any numbered game entry: the shared franchise name does not mean the two versions tell the same story.

FNaF merchandise and collectibles
FNaF’s visual identity translates naturally into physical products. Official Funko material documents a continuing range that includes Pop! figures, Bitty Pop! figures, keychains, bag clips, and other collectibles. The catalogue includes designs associated with the Pizza Place, Security Breach, Withered versions, Blacklight editions, glow-in-the-dark products, and characters such as Freddy, Foxy, Chica, Bonnie, and Glitchtrap.
Funko also documents an official six-inch Freddy plush under the Five Nights at Freddy’s license. For gift buyers, Five Nights at Freddy’s plush is a straightforward category to search, but character, size, seller, licensing details, and stock should be confirmed before purchase because assortments change.
Other licensed product categories include graphic novels and reference books, coloring and activity products, costumes, apparel, keychains, bag clips, board or card games, vinyl figures, and additional plush toys. A manufacturer or retailer listing can establish that a product exists; it does not by itself establish quality, durability, comfort, or value. Those are separate questions requiring independent evidence or firsthand testing.
How to start with Five Nights at Freddy’s
- For the original horror concept: Start with the 2014 game. It teaches the core language of FNaF—cameras, electricity, doors, lights, animatronic movement, and surviving until morning—without requiring knowledge of the wider franchise.
- For a large modern setting: Choose Security Breach. If you want the continuation set in the abandoned Mega Pizzaplex, play its Ruin story DLC afterward. Remember that Ruin is DLC for Security Breach, not a wholly separate mainline release.
- For virtual reality and mini-games: Look at Help Wanted, Help Wanted 2, or the documented VR version of Secret of the Mimic. Verify the exact headset, platform, and edition first; FNaF is not uniformly a VR-only franchise.
- For a long-form story: Begin with The Silver Eyes and continue through the original novel trilogy. Do not expect it to function as a chapter-by-chapter game-lore guide.
- For short horror stories: Try Fazbear Frights or Tales from the Pizzaplex. These anthologies are a better fit than the guidebooks if you want fiction rather than reference material.
- For visual reading: Choose the graphic novel adaptations, beginning with the version of The Silver Eyes.
- For the movie experience: Watch the films as their own continuity, then compare their use of the restaurant, characters, and family drama with the games.
- For a gift: Match the item to the fan’s interest. Plush and figures suit character-focused fans, books suit readers and lore investigators, and logbooks or coloring products suit fans who prefer activities.
If your goal is simply to experience the premise directly, play Five Nights at Freddy’s first rather than beginning with a lore summary. The original game is compact enough to explain the franchise’s basic tension, while the later games and books make more sense once the contrast between cheerful mascots and nighttime danger is familiar.

What makes the franchise endure?
FNaF combines three unusually effective forms of participation.
First, it is an immediate survival game. The player understands the objective quickly but must improve through observation and repetition. Second, it is a mystery box. The environments and characters suggest a larger history without explaining everything at once. Third, it is a recognizable visual brand. Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy can function as cartoon-like mascots in one context and threatening figures in another.

That combination allows different audiences to enter through different doors. Some players enjoy the resource-management challenge. Others follow theories about the underlying story. Readers may prefer the novels or anthologies, while film audiences can encounter the central premise without having played every game. Collectors can engage with the characters through figures, plush, and accessories.
The unresolved quality is important. A guidebook can organize names and images, but it cannot remove every ambiguity from a franchise deliberately built around clues and interpretation. The most responsible lore coverage distinguishes confirmed information from a plausible reading and labels the continuity in question.

- Flattening every branch into one timeline: Game events, novel events, anthology stories, and film events should not be presented as interchangeable evidence.
- Calling Ruin a standalone sequel: It is free story DLC for Security Breach.
- Assuming every title requires VR: VR support is specific to particular games, versions, and platforms.
- Confusing the film sequel with a game entry: Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is also the title of the film released theatrically on December 5, 2025.
- Using a guidebook as final proof of every theory: Reference books are useful, but FNaF’s mysteries and interpretations are not all settled by a single publication.
- Assuming a product listing proves quality: Official listings confirm existence, branding, and stated specifications; they do not replace independent testing.
- Ignoring edition and region differences: Game ports, DLC packaging, book editions, merchandise assortments, prices, and platform availability can change.
A practical way to research FNaF today
For a reliable overview, begin with the official Steam listing for the original game, Steel Wool’s official catalogue for its modern titles, and the official PlayStation listing when describing Ruin as free story DLC. Use Scholastic for the book categories and Universal for film credits and theatrical release information. Funko’s official catalogue is the strongest source for its licensed FNaF merchandise.
Separate stable facts from details that need a publication-date check. The original game’s premise, the existence of the major book lines, and the existence of licensed Funko products are relatively stable. Prices, stock, platform support, release editions, streaming access, and affiliate terms are not. A current article should recheck those volatile details immediately before publication.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Five Nights at Freddy’s books canon to the games?
They should not automatically be treated as interchangeable game canon. The original novel trilogy, Fazbear Frights, Tales from the Pizzaplex, graphic novels, guidebooks, and films represent distinct branches or formats that may share characters, concepts, and imagery while telling different versions of the franchise’s mysteries.
Is Five Nights at Freddy’s: Ruin a separate game?
Ruin is free story DLC for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. It follows Cassie as she enters the abandoned Mega Pizzaplex to find Gregory, so it is best approached after the relevant Security Breach story.

Do all Five Nights at Freddy’s games require a VR headset?
No. VR support applies to particular games and editions, including the Help Wanted branch and the documented VR version of Secret of the Mimic. The original Steam game and Security Breach are not uniformly VR-only experiences. Always check the exact platform listing.
What is the best place to start with FNaF?
Start with the original 2014 game if you want the clearest introduction to the franchise’s camera-monitoring survival format. Choose The Silver Eyes for a continuous novel, Fazbear Frights or Tales from the Pizzaplex for anthology horror, or the films if you prefer a self-contained adaptation continuity.
The Bottom Line
Five Nights at Freddy’s is best understood as a connected but multi-continuity horror franchise. The original game provides the essential survival formula, Security Breach and Ruin expand the setting, Steel Wool’s newer titles explore different formats, the books offer separate narrative and reference paths, and the films adapt the premise into their own continuity. Start with the medium that matches your interest, and identify the branch before making a lore claim.
