The Fabulous Four (2024) is an American comedy about four longtime friends whose reunion in Key West, Florida, turns a wedding weekend into an emotional reckoning. Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse and led by Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, the film explores friendship, romance, aging, self-love, and the possibility of starting over. It runs approximately 98–99 minutes, is rated R, and was released theatrically in the United States on July 26, 2024.
What is The Fabulous Four about?
The story follows lifelong friends Lou, Marilyn, Alice, and Kitty. Three of the women travel to Key West to serve as bridesmaids at Marilyn’s surprise wedding, bringing the old group back together after years of shared history and unresolved tension.
What begins as a celebratory reunion quickly reopens conflicts and complicated memories. The weekend brings romantic complications, sex, drinking, and other uncomfortable subjects into the open, while the women reassess what they want from friendship and from their own lives.
The film’s emphasis is not on a mystery, historical event, or documentary subject. It is a contemporary, character-driven comedy centered on four fictional friends. The title should also be kept separate from Marvel’s unrelated Fantastic Four franchise; including “2024” is useful when searching for this film.

Cast and characters
Bette Midler as Marilyn
Marilyn is the friend whose wedding brings the group back together. Her planned celebration provides the film’s central reunion and forces the women to confront the distance, changes, and secrets that have accumulated over the years.
Susan Sarandon as Lou
Lou is one of Marilyn’s longtime college friends and a member of the central quartet. Sarandon is part of the film’s ensemble of established performers playing women with substantial shared history rather than supporting figures in someone else’s story.
Megan Mullally as Alice
Alice is another of the reunited friends. Her character is part of the group dynamic that drives the comedy: old loyalties, familiar arguments, and the freedom to challenge one another without pretending that the past never happened.
Sheryl Lee Ralph as Kitty
Kitty completes the main group of longtime friends. Ralph joined the ensemble after Sissy Spacek, who had originally been attached to the project, left because of scheduling conflicts.
Supporting cast
Bruce Greenwood, Timothy V. Murphy, and Michael Bolton are also listed among the film’s credited cast. The production was made with Southpaw Entertainment and Hantz Motion Pictures, with Lauren Hantz and Richard Barton Lewis producing.

Director and production background
The Fabulous Four was directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse and written by Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly. Moorhouse’s previous directing credits include Muriel’s Wedding and The Dressmaker. Those credits may help viewers place her career, but they do not by themselves establish that The Fabulous Four is a sequel or a continuation of either film.
The story is set in Key West, Florida, while production took place in Georgia. Bleecker Street acquired the film’s North American rights and handled its domestic theatrical distribution. The casting announcement noted that production proceeded in Georgia under an interim SAG-AFTRA agreement.
David Hirschfelder composed the score, and Roberto Schaefer served as cinematographer. A digital soundtrack from Filmtrax was released on July 26, 2024, with a listed running time of approximately 43 minutes and 38 seconds.

Friendship that survives change
The wedding reunion gives the four women a reason to be together, but the film is ultimately about more than attending a ceremony. Their long friendship includes affection, resentment, shared memories, and the ability to speak bluntly to one another. The comedy comes from that familiarity as much as from the wedding situation itself.
Romance and self-reinvention later in life
A defining feature of the film is its focus on older women whose romantic and personal lives are still active. The characters are not presented as having reached the end of their stories simply because they are no longer young. Sex, attraction, partnership, and the possibility of reinvention remain part of the conversation.
Self-love and living fully
Interviews around the film describe its broader concerns as friendship, connection, self-love, and living fully. That perspective is important to the movie’s identity: the reunion is not only about repairing old relationships but also about asking whether each woman is satisfied with the life she has built.
A women-centered ensemble
Moorhouse described the project as an opportunity to make a women-centered film around performers she regarded as legends. The four-lead structure gives Midler, Sarandon, Mullally, and Ralph equal importance within the premise rather than using one character’s wedding as an excuse to make the other women background figures.
Rating and content guidance
The Fabulous Four is rated R for some sexual material, drug use, and language. Parents and viewers who want more detail should expect strong language, drinking, marijuana use, sexual material, and a drug-related prank. Those additional points come from secondary parental-viewing guidance and should supplement, not replace, the official rating reason.
This is therefore not a family comedy despite its wedding and friendship premise. The tone is aimed at adults, and the story’s treatment of romance, sex, substance use, and old conflicts is part of the film’s adult-comedy framework.
Release history and box office
Bleecker Street released The Fabulous Four theatrically in the United States on July 26, 2024. Box Office Mojo records a widest release of 1,045 theaters, an opening weekend of approximately $1.04 million, and a worldwide gross of approximately $3.54 million.

Where to watch The Fabulous Four
U.S. availability is retailer- and territory-dependent and can change. JustWatch has listed free or ad-supported viewing options alongside digital rental and purchase choices through services including Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Check the current listing and price before renting or buying; no single streaming or digital service should be treated as a permanent home for the film.
The film also has physical-media options. For viewers who want a copy that does not depend on a changing streaming catalog, a The Fabulous Four DVD is the most straightforward choice. A U.S. Region A Blu-ray release from Decal Releasing is listed with a September 10, 2024 release date, making The Fabulous Four Blu-ray the higher-definition alternative for households with a compatible Blu-ray player.
DVD, Blu-ray, or digital rental?
| Option | Best for | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Digital rental | Viewers who want to watch once without storing a disc | Availability and rental pricing vary by service and territory. |
| Digital purchase | Viewers who prefer immediate access through a supported account | Confirm the retailer, playback devices, and purchase terms before checkout. |
| DVD | Broad compatibility and a permanent physical copy | DVD has standard-definition picture quality and requires a DVD player or compatible drive. |
| Blu-ray | Collectors and viewers with Blu-ray equipment who prefer higher-definition video | The identified U.S. release is Region A, so check player compatibility outside North America. |
If convenience is the priority, compare current digital listings. If long-term access is more important, choose the disc format your equipment supports. The DVD is the safer general recommendation for compatibility; the Blu-ray is the better fit for viewers specifically seeking high-definition physical media.
