America’s divisions did not begin on September 11, 2001. Kevin M. Kruse and Julian E. Zelizer trace the political and social changes behind modern polarization to 1974, while accounts by Mike German and Spencer Ackerman examine how the post-9/11 security era affected institutions and civic life. The history of white supremacy reaches further back still. These are connected strands of a longer story, not evidence that one event created today’s divisions.
Why the story of polarization starts before 9/11
In Fault Lines: A History of the United States Since 1974, historians Kevin M. Kruse and Julian E. Zelizer begin their account in 1974. Their starting point makes an important distinction: the polarization visible in the post-9/11 era had political and social antecedents. Their account considers changes in political institutions and media alongside disputes involving inequality, race, gender roles and sexual norms.
A Princeton University Department of History listing for the book summarizes the argument this way: “Longstanding historical fault lines over income inequality, racial division, and a revolution in gender roles and sexual norms would deepen and fuel a polarized political landscape.” That is the book’s historical interpretation, not a claim that every divide has the same cause or that polarization followed a single, inevitable path.
Starting in 1974 also helps prevent a misleading before-and-after story. September 11 was a defining event in the history of national security, but it cannot explain divisions that the authors locate in earlier decades. Their broad account is useful for placing the post-9/11 period in context, rather than treating it as the origin of modern American conflict.

What the post-9/11 security era adds to the history
The attacks of September 11 brought national security to the center of American public life. The works by Mike German and Spencer Ackerman included here focus on a particular strand of the resulting history: how expanded security approaches affected government institutions, civil liberties and civic life. Their arguments should be read as attributed accounts, not as a comprehensive measurement of how much post-9/11 policy caused present-day polarization.

| Work | Focus of the account | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Mike German, Disrupt, Discredit, and Divide | German’s account concerns the FBI’s transformation and the effects of national-security approaches on targeted communities and public confidence. | An author’s account of an institution and civil liberties; it is not, by itself, a measure of the full security state or its effects on every community. |
| Spencer Ackerman, Reign of Terror | Ackerman argues that the War on Terror shaped civic life and political conflict. | A journalistic interpretation of a broad era, distinct in focus from German’s account of FBI policy. |
Putting these works beside a history that begins in 1974 clarifies the relationship without overstating it: post-9/11 policy forms one consequential layer in a longer history of political conflict. The two books also ask different questions. One centers on an institution and civil liberties; the other makes a broader argument about the War on Terror and American political life.

White supremacy has a longer history than the post-9/11 era
A Field Guide to White Supremacy, edited by Kathleen Belew and Ramón A. Gutiérrez, places contemporary violence alongside histories and systems. The University of California Press description identifies a wide range of contexts, including immigration, antisemitism, gendered violence, lynching and organized domestic terrorism. Its approach makes historical context central: present-day events can be examined in relation to older structures and forms of violence, rather than treated as isolated or unprecedented.
That breadth does not mean every episode, organization or policy belongs to one undifferentiated category. White supremacist activity has taken different forms across time, and the histories named in the collection are not interchangeable. Keeping those distinctions visible makes it possible to trace connections without erasing differences in actors, targets and methods.

How current racial-policy arguments are framed
In America’s New Racial Battle Lines, Rogers M. Smith and Desmond King offer a framework they call “Protect” and “Repair” to analyze rival policy alliances. They map these alliances by their goals, stories, institutional reach and funding. The labels describe the authors’ analytical model; they are not neutral names that all political actors use for themselves.
The framework is useful for comparing policy agendas on specific terms: what each seeks to protect or change, which institutions it tries to influence, how it interprets the history behind current conditions, and what remedies it proposes. It should not be used to flatten people or organizations into two exhaustive camps. The book’s model is one authors’ way of organizing contemporary racial-policy debate, not proof that every actor fits neatly into either alliance.

A layered timeline, not a single-cause explanation
The sources point to different time scales and kinds of explanation. Kruse and Zelizer offer a broad history of political and social polarization beginning in 1974; German and Ackerman interpret the institutional and civic consequences of the post-9/11 security era; Belew and Gutiérrez’s collection situates contemporary white supremacist violence in longer histories; and Smith and King analyze current racial-policy alliances. Their arguments can inform one another, but they do not amount to a single consensus explanation or establish the relative causal weight of each strand.

A story about the War on Terror may explain one part of modern civic conflict without explaining the origins of racial division; a historical account of white supremacy can illuminate continuities without making distinct movements identical.
