In a conversation on Our Wild Lives, wildlife ecologist and science communicator Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant explains how nature media helped her imagine a career in wildlife, why access and belonging shape who enters conservation, and why public communication is one valuable scientific role—not a requirement for every scientist.

What the episode covers

Hosted by Katie Perkins and Ed Arnett, The Wildlife Society’s Our Wild Lives episode “Communication in Conservation with Rae Wynn-Grant” was published October 2, 2026. It runs 51 minutes and 53 seconds and includes chapter headings and a transcript. Listen to the episode and read its transcript.

The discussion traces Wynn-Grant’s account of moving from a childhood interest in nature television toward environmental science, wildlife ecology and large-carnivore field research. She also reflects on barriers to outdoor access, representation in nature media, education and career pathways, her children’s book You Belong in the Wild, and her later work communicating science to public audiences.

How did Rae Wynn-Grant find her way into wildlife ecology?

Wynn-Grant says nature television first helped her picture herself working with wildlife. She grew up in cities and did not have the routine access to outdoor recreation that she saw some peers experience. As she learned about conservation science and wildlife ecology, she recognized routes into the work behind the nature programs she admired.

In the interview, she describes studying environmental science and taking part in a wildlife-management and conservation study-abroad program in southern Kenya through the School for Field Studies. She later worked on large-carnivore research. These are Wynn-Grant’s recollections in the conversation, rather than an independently verified account of her biography. The episode describes a past program; it does not establish what the School for Field Studies currently offers.

What barriers can keep people from getting outdoors?

Wynn-Grant describes outdoor access as more than the presence or absence of parks. In her account, barriers can be structural, financial, psychological and cultural, including whether someone feels they belong in a particular outdoor space. She gives examples such as not having a car or not knowing people who regularly went outdoors.

Her point is not that an urban childhood is deficient. As she puts it, “being urban and growing up urban without, you know, lots of time in nature is an okay way to grow up.” She also says, “There are pockets of nature everywhere.” The episode presents these as her perspective and experience, not as measurements of how common any barrier is.

How can conservation professionals help more young people enter the field?

Wynn-Grant urges educators and conservation professionals to start with what young people already know about their surroundings, rather than assuming they arrive without relevant experience. That approach treats local knowledge as a foundation to build on, not a gap to correct.

She also connects representation in nature media and conservation with young people’s sense of who can be an expert and who belongs in the field. Her own path illustrates why exposure matters: young people cannot consider a career they have never encountered. The interview’s transcript captures her point in a spoken false start—“if you don’t know what you what’s on the table then you don’t even know”—so the episode’s broader discussion is clearer than that fragment alone.

Does every scientist need to do public-facing communication?

No. Wynn-Grant sees science communication as valuable, but not as an obligation or the only meaningful contribution a scientist can make. Fieldwork, data analysis, writing, critical thinking and other skills all help science do its work. She says, “we don’t need to fricking push people,” and argues that people’s skills and preferences should be respected so they can do their best work.
