Heard a song in a memorable movie scene and missed it in the credits? Start with WhatSong: search for the movie or show to find songs associated with it, with scene descriptions and playlist links where available. It is a useful first stop, not a guarantee of every musical cue in every version of a film.
WhatSong: a first stop for movie music
WhatSong is built around connecting music with movies and television. Search a title to look up its documented songs; depending on the entry, you may also find the performing artist, soundtrack or album details, a playlist or listening link, and a description of the scene. For TV, episode-level information may be available.
The service’s podcast description refers to official soundtracks, complete playlists, and scene descriptions. Its company description also discusses structured data about music-sync moments in film, television, and gaming; that broader business description should not be taken to mean every consumer entry includes every type of detail. WhatSong says it was acquired by Tunespotter in July 2025, according to its company profile.

Remakes and films with the same title are easy to confuse. Compare any scene notes with the version you watched, then use an available listening link to check the track. “All the songs” is not a guarantee
A soundtrack database is a discovery aid, not necessarily a complete or authoritative cue sheet. A film’s music can include licensed songs, music playing from a radio or in a club, original score, brief instrumental cues, end-credit tracks, trailer music, and music heard only in deleted or alternate scenes. International releases and streaming versions can also differ.
It helps to distinguish three things:
- Music used in the film: songs and score cues audible in the version being watched.
- An official soundtrack album: a commercial release that may include only selected songs or score, not every cue.
- Trailer music: music used to promote a film, which may not appear in the film itself.
Instrumental music can be especially hard to trace. It may be original score, unreleased, or different from the version on a soundtrack album. Tunefind’s guidance on instrumental background music explains why a cue heard onscreen may not have a matching commercial recording.
When a track does not sound like the one in the scene
A database may identify the composition but not the exact recording. The film could use an original recording, a cover, a live performance, a remix, an edited version, or a re-recording made for the production. A short excerpt may also sound different from a full-length track. With classical music, several recordings of the same composition can be hard to distinguish; Tunefind’s classical-music guidance notes that streaming metadata may foreground the recording artist rather than the composer or arranger.

Use scene notes, credits, and the recording itself to verify a match. A streaming link is a useful lead, but it does not prove that the linked recording is the exact one used onscreen or that it will work in every country.

If WhatSong does not have the answer
- Check the title carefully. Try the release year, original title, or another international title if the film does not appear.
- Pin down the scene. Note the approximate time, characters, location, and whether the music plays over dialogue, in the background, or during the credits.
- Check the credits. A film’s end credits may identify songs or music supervisors, though they may not resolve every cue.
- Search distinctive lyrics if you can make out a phrase. For instrumental music, try searching the film’s composer and score release.
- Compare databases. Try Tunefind or MoviesOST; community coverage and detail can differ.
- Replay the scene and try Shazam if the audio is available. Shazam identifies music it can hear; it is not a complete movie-soundtrack index. See its app information.
If a result lists the right song but appears to describe the wrong scene, check for a repeat appearance, an end-credit use, or a different version of the film. If a listening link fails, search the artist and title directly in your preferred music service: links may be outdated, region-restricted, or attached to a different recording.

Community-submitted databases can be helpful but vary in completeness. Tunefind says submissions can be reviewed through community voting, and incorrect or spam entries may be removed. New releases, less widely covered films, and obscure tracks may take longer to appear or remain undocumented. No single listing should be treated as conclusive when the exact recording or scene matters.

What-Song.com, associated with the WhatSong brand, and Whatsong.org are separate properties in the available descriptions. Whatsong.org describes itself as a movie-and-TV soundtrack search engine using the TMDb API on its About page. Do not assume their catalogs, ownership, or features are shared.
