If Files of the Unexplained left you wanting more eerie encounters, baffling disappearances, and unresolved cases, try Unsolved Mysteries, Encounters, Investigation Alien, or Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified. They range from crime-and-paranormal case files to UFO eyewitness accounts and claims about secret government programs. Netflix’s catalog varies by country, so check your local listing before you settle on your next watch.

What makes Files of the Unexplained unusual?

Netflix lists Files of the Unexplained as a 2024 documentary with eight episodes. The cases move from the Pascagoula alien-abduction account and UFO claims to the Yuba County Five, the Myrtles Plantation, Lake Lanier folklore, Mount Shasta legends, the Oakville blobs, and the Salish Sea floating feet. Netflix describes it as an investigative docuseries exploring “eerie encounters,” “bizarre disappearances,” “mysterious hauntings,” and “chilling cold cases.” The appeal is that mix: strange claims sit alongside disappearances and cases that remain unresolved, without making every mystery a supernatural one. Netflix’s title listing and its Media Center description provide the official format and premise.

Four docuseries to watch next

Unsolved Mysteries: for the broadest range of cases

Choose Unsolved Mysteries if you want the closest match to a case-file format but with more emphasis on crime and missing people. Netflix’s listing includes five volumes and covers real cases as well as paranormal encounters; examples include the disappearance of Rey Rivera and the Berkshires UFO account. It offers the widest shift in subject matter among these picks, moving between unresolved crimes, disappearances, and strange experiences rather than focusing only on UFOs. Netflix’s listing for Unsolved Mysteries has the current volume information and episode descriptions.

Encounters: for eyewitness accounts

If the UFO and alien-encounter stories in Files of the Unexplained were the main draw, Encounters is the most direct follow-up. Netflix lists four episodes, built around eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and new evidence. Its cases include the Texas lights and the 1994 Zimbabwe school sighting. The format keeps the focus on what witnesses say they experienced and how others interpret those accounts; the presence of interviews or evidence in a documentary is not proof of an extraterrestrial explanation. See Netflix’s Encounters page for its episode details.

Investigation Alien: for a reporter-led UFO search

Investigation Alien suits viewers who would rather follow one investigator than move through a standalone case anthology. Netflix lists six episodes and identifies reporter George Knapp as the central investigator. The episode descriptions cover reported sightings, claimed alien encounters, and competing interpretations, giving the series a host-led investigative frame. As with other UFO documentaries, reported experiences and claims should be distinguished from verified conclusions. Netflix’s series listing for Investigation Alien provides the episode descriptions.

Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified: for alleged programs and secrecy

Pick Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified if the most intriguing thread is the possibility of hidden government activity. Netflix lists six episodes, covering subjects such as Project Blue Book, alleged MJ-12, and claims of reverse engineering. These are topics and theories the series discusses, not established proof that a secret program operated as described or that alien technology was recovered. Its focus on secrecy and conspiracy claims makes it the most allegation-driven option in this list. Check Netflix’s listing for Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified for its episode summaries.

Which one should you choose?

Series Best for Storytelling frame How to read its claims
Unsolved Mysteries Crime, disappearances, and paranormal cases Broad case-by-case anthology Cases and paranormal encounters share the same series, but the premise does not settle what happened.
Encounters UFO sightings and witness accounts Eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and new evidence Witness testimony and interpretations are presented as material to consider, not proof of aliens.
Investigation Alien A host-led search into UFO reports Reporter George Knapp investigates reported sightings and claimed encounters Descriptions include competing interpretations; a reported encounter is not a verified explanation.
Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified Alleged government projects and secrecy Series built around UFO-related programs and theories MJ-12 and reverse-engineering material should be understood as allegations and claims discussed by the show.
