If your YouTube Live video works but its audio is missing, trace the signal from FFmpeg’s input to its output, then check YouTube’s ingest-health message. Confirm that FFmpeg sees an audio stream, that the output maps it and does not disable it with -an, and that its codec and settings suit the selected protocol. Adding -c:a aac cannot create audio that the source does not contain.
1. Confirm FFmpeg receives audio from the source
Start at the input, not the encoder. Inspect FFmpeg’s startup information and logs for the streams detected in each input. If you are streaming a file, verify that it actually contains an audio stream. If you are capturing live audio, verify that the intended device is included and producing signal.
- No audio stream detected: Check the file, capture device, input selection, or upstream audio connection. Changing the output codec will not restore audio that never reaches FFmpeg.
- An audio stream is detected: Continue to the output mapping and options. Seeing an input stream does not prove that FFmpeg includes it in the stream sent to YouTube.
YouTube’s noAudioStream health issue confirms that the ingested stream lacks audio; by itself, it does not identify whether the cause is a silent source, a wrong capture device, or an omission later in FFmpeg’s processing.
2. Check FFmpeg stream mapping and audio-disabling options
FFmpeg may select streams automatically, or you can control selection with -map. When you specify mappings for an output, only the mapped streams are included, subject to FFmpeg’s documented filtergraph exception. Inspect every mapping and make sure the audio stream comes from the intended input index, especially when the command uses multiple inputs.

-andisables audio recording for an output, including automatic audio selection or mapping. Remove it from the relevant output if that output should carry sound.- If you use
-map, map the intended audio stream as well as the video stream. A video-only mapping will produce video without audio. - If you rely on automatic selection, check the resulting output: FFmpeg selects one available audio stream, using the stream with the most channels as its documented selection criterion. That may not be the source you intended.
- Review option placement and scope. Many FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output file, so an option in the wrong position may affect a different part of the command.
Use FFmpeg’s output information or a short test to verify that the encoded output contains the audio stream you meant to send. Do not infer that it does just because the input has audio or the command includes an audio codec option.
3. Match audio encoding to the YouTube ingest protocol
Identify whether the stream is using RTMP/RTMPS or HLS before choosing audio settings. YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists different supported audio codecs for these protocols.

| Protocol | Audio codecs listed by YouTube | YouTube recommendations | Other relevant detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1; 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1; 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 | HLS uses segmented delivery over HTTPS and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. |
These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a particular command is correct. Use the health message for the actual incoming stream to check for unsupported codecs, sample-rate, channel-count, or bitrate problems.
FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder is its default AAC encoder. FFmpeg documents a default bitrate of 128 kbps when no bitrate is specified. That can be a starting point for stereo, but verify the output stream and YouTube’s health status rather than treating the default as proof that the ingest is configured correctly.

4. Use YouTube’s stream-health message to narrow the cause
Read the specific audio issue shown in YouTube Live’s stream-health diagnostics and correct that dimension instead of changing unrelated video settings. The YouTube Live Streaming API health-status catalog describes these relevant issues:
noAudioStream: the ingested stream contains no audio stream; it must contain exactly one.multipleAudioStreams: the stream contains too many audio streams.audioCodec: the audio codec is unsupported for the ingest setup.- Other audio warnings identify bitrate, sample-rate, or channel-count problems, or a mismatch between primary and backup streams.
For example, if the message reports no audio stream, revisit the source and mapping. If it identifies the codec or an audio parameter, check the settings against the protocol you selected. YouTube’s diagnostics identify an ingest problem; they do not necessarily reveal which upstream stage introduced it.

5. Check HLS delivery requirements if you use HLS
Do not apply RTMP assumptions to an HLS setup. In addition to selecting an HLS-listed audio codec, YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies these delivery requirements:
- Use TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Deliver segments using HTTPS POST or PUT requests.
- Do not use byte ranges.
If those transport details do not match your setup, investigate the HLS configuration as well as the audio stream. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP.

6. Test the complete stream before the event
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream with audio and video movement similar to what you plan to broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. A controlled test is a practical way to check the full path—from source to FFmpeg output to YouTube ingest—without assuming that one successful stage proves the others are correct.
- Start the stream with the actual source, FFmpeg command, and ingest protocol you intend to use.
- Include representative sound and motion, then verify that FFmpeg detects and outputs the intended audio stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and address any audio warning it reports.
- Monitor health messages during the event in case the ingest condition changes.
7. Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom or message | What to inspect | Next fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| Video appears, but FFmpeg detects no input audio | Source file or capture device and whether it is producing signal | Correct the source or capture input before changing encoding options. |
FFmpeg sees audio, but YouTube reports noAudioStream |
Output mappings, -an, and the actual FFmpeg output streams |
Include the intended audio stream in the output and remove an audio-disabling option where applicable. |
YouTube reports multipleAudioStreams |
Manual mappings and the streams included in the output | Adjust the output selection so it contains exactly one audio stream. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported audio codec | Selected protocol and encoded output codec | Use a codec listed for that protocol: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; AAC, AC3, or EAC3 for HLS. |
| YouTube reports an audio bitrate, sample-rate, or channel-count issue | Output parameters and the recommendation for the selected protocol | Correct the parameter named in the health message and verify the new output. |
| Audio comes from the wrong source or input | Input indices, explicit -map options, and automatic selection |
Map the intended input’s audio stream explicitly, then inspect the output. |
