Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most creators who want to loop a playlist of prerecorded videos, OBS is easier to set up: its VLC Video source gives you a visible playlist and a Loop Playlist control. FFmpeg is a better fit if you already work comfortably at the command line or need scripted processing and automation. That is an inference from the documented workflows, not the result of a hands-on usability test.
OBS or FFmpeg: the quick comparison
| What matters | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How you configure it | Use a desktop interface with scenes and sources. | Build a command-line workflow with input, processing, and output options. |
| Playlist looping | VLC Video source provides a visible playlist and Loop Playlist control. VLC must be installed. | Can be incorporated into an automated pipeline, but the documentation cited here does not provide an equivalent playlist GUI or universal playlist-to-YouTube command. |
| Customization | Provides a visual way to arrange stream sources; the documented advantage here is straightforward playlist setup. | Suitable for scripting, custom media processing, and configurable recovery behavior. |
| Best fit | A GUI-first creator who wants to select files and loop them. | A command-line user who wants repeatable automation or custom processing. |
Neither option by itself makes a stream immune to computer, network, or platform problems. Test the complete playlist and YouTube preview before relying on a long stream.
How to loop prerecorded video in OBS
For one video: Media Source
OBS Media Source plays a local media file and includes a Loop toggle. Use it when you want the same recording to repeat. OBS places sources inside scenes, which define the content and layout sent to the stream.
For multiple videos: VLC Video source
- Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
- In OBS, select or create the scene for the stream, then add a VLC Video source.
- Use the source’s playlist controls to add the video files and arrange their order.
- Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Shuffle Playlist is available and defaults off, so leave it off if you need a fixed sequence.
- Preview the scene and let the full playlist run through, checking that each file plays and that audio is present before streaming.
OBS is the more approachable choice for this task if you prefer visible controls: the playlist and looping behavior are exposed in the source settings. Its extra requirement is VLC installation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How FFmpeg fits a playlist loop
FFmpeg can send processed video to an RTMP server, and its documentation includes an example using a FIFO muxer to attempt recovery after a temporary network failure. That makes it a flexible foundation for command-line workflows, but not a ready-made universal recipe for every playlist.
The exact command depends on the files, codecs, desired order or transitions, and output settings. Build and test a command for your own inputs rather than treating a generic example as a verified playlist-to-YouTube solution. Choose FFmpeg when you are comfortable configuring and maintaining that pipeline, or need custom processing and scripting; choose OBS when you want to manage a playlist through a desktop interface.

Connect either encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder you chose. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure variant of RTMP.
- Keep the stream key private: it functions as a credential that identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live. To finish, stop the encoder and end the stream in YouTube as applicable.
Settings and preflight checks that matter
- Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bandwidth: Leave upload headroom; YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% above the bitrate in use.
- Test before the event: Start the encoder in advance, check the preview, verify both audio and video, and monitor stream health. A local preview alone does not confirm that the YouTube feed is healthy.
- Long playlist check: Run the complete sequence under the conditions you expect to use. Check file transitions, audio, the YouTube preview, and network stability rather than assuming that a successful first clip proves the full loop.
These are YouTube recommendations, not a comparative benchmark of OBS and FFmpeg. Apply them whichever encoder you use.
Common problems and what to check
- The VLC playlist source is unavailable in OBS: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- A single file repeats but the list does not: Media Source’s Loop toggle is for repeating a media file. For a multi-file sequence, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist.
- The preview does not appear in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and that it is actively sending the feed.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check upload headroom and stream health. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom; FFmpeg’s documented FIFO example can attempt recovery from temporary network failure, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
- Audio or a later playlist item fails: Preview and test the full sequence, including transitions and audio, before depending on the stream.
