For most single-PC streamers, a separate hardware encoder is not the first upgrade to buy. OBS supports modern GPU encoders that can reduce CPU work while delivering good video quality. A standalone encoder is worth considering when your production needs go beyond encoding—such as multiple camera inputs, live switching, recording, or a portable setup that does not rely on a general-purpose computer.
“Hardware encoder” can mean either a dedicated encoding block already built into a computer’s GPU or a separate streaming appliance. Check which one you mean before comparing options.
What a hardware encoder does
GPU encoder inside a computer
When OBS uses a GPU’s dedicated encoding hardware, it shifts encoding work away from the x264 software encoder running on the CPU. OBS says modern hardware encoders can provide good video quality with minimal performance impact. If your computer already has a supported GPU encoder and your stream is stable, you may already have the relevant hardware without buying another device. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance explains the distinction.
Standalone streaming encoder
A standalone encoder is a separate device that captures and encodes video, often combining encoding with production functions. Depending on the model, it may accept camera inputs, switch between sources, record, and send a stream without a PC doing the production work. Those extra workflow capabilities—not merely the word “hardware”—are the main reason to consider one.

GPU encoding vs. CPU encoding: what changes?
The practical comparison is between the encoder available in your specific GPU and software encoding with your chosen x264 settings—not “hardware” and “software” as universal quality categories.
- CPU headroom: GPU encoding moves encoding work off the CPU, which can help if the CPU is also handling a game, graphics, or other production tasks.
- Image quality: OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding using its default veryfast preset. That is not a blanket verdict on current encoders: generation, codec, settings, content, and bitrate all affect the result.
- Performance and quality are a trade-off to check on your equipment: OBS describes modern hardware encoders favorably, but does not establish one quality ranking for every GPU, codec, or stream.
Before purchasing an appliance, test the encoder already available in your streaming PC at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your destination accepts. If it meets your image-quality and performance needs, a separate encoder may duplicate a capability you already have.

Check destination requirements before choosing an encoder
An encoder is useful only if it can output a format accepted by the platform receiving the stream. Confirm the destination’s current requirements for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and ingest protocol before choosing hardware or configuring OBS. Platform guidance can change, and recommendations differ by destination.
- YouTube’s live encoder settings lists recommended settings by resolution, frame rate, and codec, and recommends CBR and RTMPS.
- NVIDIA’s OBS guide gives destination-specific advice: it recommends NVENC H.264 for Twitch and describes YouTube codec options that depend on supported hardware. Its advanced settings include CBR, a platform-appropriate bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval.
Treat these as platform and guide-specific recommendations, not a universal preset. Check the destination’s current instructions and the settings available on your exact encoder, especially when using a different platform or codec.

When a standalone encoder is worth considering
You need a multi-camera production workflow
If your production uses multiple cameras, switching between sources, and recording, a standalone device may replace several parts of a PC-centered setup. For example, the manufacturer lists HDMI and USB inputs, MP4 recording, and live production functions for the YoloBox Ultra live streaming encoder and switcher. Its published specifications also list Ethernet and wireless connectivity, RTMP/RTMPS/SRT streaming, H.264/H.265 encoding, and live output modes up to 4K at 30 fps. These are specifications for that model, not features to assume every standalone encoder includes. Verify the current unit configuration and destination compatibility before buying.
You need a portable or self-contained setup
A separate appliance may suit an event or field setup where portability and reduced dependence on a general-purpose computer matter. Assess what the device actually replaces: camera capture, switching, recording, networking, or operator steps. If you only need to encode a single PC source, those additional features may not justify carrying and configuring another device.

Your existing PC encoder is already adequate
If OBS is meeting your stream’s quality and performance needs with a modern GPU encoder, buying a separate box solely to reduce CPU load is usually a weak reason. First identify a specific unmet need—such as camera inputs or a self-contained workflow—that an appliance would solve.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical buying checklist
- List what you already own. Check whether your PC has a supported GPU encoder and whether OBS can use it.
- Define the problem. Is the issue CPU load, picture quality at your bitrate, camera inputs, switching, recording, portability, or dependence on a PC? A standalone device is most compelling when it solves a production need beyond encoding.
- Confirm platform compatibility. Match the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and output protocol to the destination’s current requirements.
- Compare the exact encoder generation and settings. Do not assume a dedicated encoder always looks better than x264 or that all hardware encoders behave alike.
- Account for the full workflow and cost. Consider configuration, transport, networking, and whether the device replaces other equipment or work. The available manufacturer and platform information does not establish a current street price or a quantified payback period.
Cost and evidence limits
A standalone encoder adds a device to buy, configure, and potentially carry. Its value depends on the equipment and work it replaces; available product specifications do not establish a universal saving or payback period. Current street prices, long-term reliability, and objective head-to-head image-quality results across encoder generations are not established by the cited product and platform pages. This is a source-based decision guide, not a hands-on comparison.
