Neither FFmpeg nor OBS is universally lighter on CPU or more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube playlist. The result depends on whether your setup copies or re-encodes video, the resolution and frame rate, filters or scene composition, encoder hardware, playlist behavior, network, and how you restart and monitor failed processes. FFmpeg suits a scripted, fixed-purpose pipeline; OBS suits a graphical production workflow with scenes and operator controls. Compare them on the exact machine and playlist you intend to use—not by product name alone.
What differs between FFmpeg and OBS
FFmpeg is a command-line media framework for reading, filtering, converting, and transmitting media. It can support a lean pipeline for a fixed playlist, but that depends on the command and whether it can avoid expensive processing such as re-encoding or scaling. Its flexibility also means you must define playlist behavior, error handling, output, and any process supervision yourself.
OBS Studio is a graphical production application. It renders and composites scenes as well as encoding the output, and offers controls intended for an operator. That can be useful when the stream needs scene changes or other live production control, but scene complexity and rendering add their own resource considerations.
| Decision area | FFmpeg | OBS Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Scripted, repeatable media pipeline with command-line configuration. | Graphical workflow with scenes, compositing, and operator-facing controls. |
| CPU and GPU | Depends on the input, command, filters, scaling, decoding, and whether video is re-encoded or copied. | Encoding and scene rendering both matter. A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work off the CPU, but does not eliminate rendering work. |
| Reconnect and restart | Behavior depends on the command, output protocol, error handling, and any external supervisor. | Provides configurable output auto-reconnect controls; a separate plan may still be needed for process exits, host restarts, and other failures. |
| Playlist operation | Can be scripted, but playlist repeat, transitions, and bad-entry handling need to be designed and validated. | Offers a graphical production workflow; test the chosen media sources and transitions across the full playlist. |
| What documentation establishes | The official manual describes media processing capabilities, not a comparative CPU or 24/7 uptime advantage. | Official documentation describes hardware encoding, performance considerations, and reconnect controls, not a comparative uptime advantage. |
The documented differences are not a matched benchmark. The official sources cited here do not provide equivalent CPU measurements or comparative multi-day endurance tests for the two applications.

What determines CPU use
CPU consumption follows the work your pipeline performs. Source codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, scaling, decoding, and output encoding all matter. Copying an already compatible video stream is a different workload from decoding and encoding it again; do not assume a playlist command can copy streams when its output settings require conversion.
OBS adds scene compositing and rendering to the picture. OBS says hardware encoders can take encoding work off the CPU and move it to a specialized GPU component, while its performance guidance also identifies GPU overload and scene complexity as concerns. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU encoding load; it is not a promise of low total resource use or uninterrupted streaming. Check operating-system, GPU, driver, and encoder compatibility before relying on NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, or Apple VideoToolbox.

There is no sound basis in the cited documentation for a universal CPU percentage or a claim that FFmpeg always uses less CPU. An apples-to-apples test must use the same source files, output codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, hardware, and encoder settings. Record CPU and GPU use, dropped or duplicated frames, encoder-overload indicators, playlist transitions, reconnect events, stream health, and output quality over the same multi-hour or multi-day period.
What reliability means in a continuous stream
A 24/7 stream is a chain of responsibilities, not just an encoder process. The media must keep advancing, audio must remain present, the connection must reach YouTube, the process must recover from relevant failures, and someone or something must reveal when it has not.

OBS reconnect controls
OBS documents auto-reconnect settings for supported outputs, including a maximum retry count and a starting retry wait. The wait doubles with each attempt to avoid overloading services. OBS also reports output frame drops associated with network congestion. These are useful controls and signals, not proof that OBS will recover from every failure or that it is more reliable than a properly supervised FFmpeg process.
FFmpeg process and playlist handling
With FFmpeg, reliability depends on how the playlist is constructed, the output protocol, command error behavior, and what happens when the process exits. A production setup needs a defined response to playlist exhaustion, malformed or missing files, connection loss, and host restart. The FFmpeg manuals describe media processing and output capabilities; they do not establish a one-click 24/7 playlist supervisor or an uptime guarantee.

Network and YouTube health
Encoding and network capacity are separate problems. OBS recommends matching bitrate to stable upload capacity and investigating server, network, and software interference when connection problems occur. Lowering bitrate can ease the required upload rate, but may reduce quality and does not repair the underlying connection. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health and messages.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived; do not assume a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce the archive you expect.

Set up and validate either workflow for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance for the output format you select. The figures below are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU measurements, guarantees of stream quality, or universal choices for every connection. Guidance can change, so check the current table when setting up.
| YouTube example output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 support, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). It recommends RTMPS for secure transport. Confirm the current codec and bitrate guidance for your selected output at setup time.
- Prepare YouTube’s live setup. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use the displayed server URL and stream key in your encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and test before going live.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or shared configuration. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Match encoder settings to the intended output. Set the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, bitrate, and keyframe interval in line with YouTube’s current guidance and your stable upload capacity. Apply the equivalent output settings in whichever workflow you use.
- Test the complete playlist. YouTube explicitly recommends testing with similar audio and movement. Also check the operational edge cases: transitions, files with different properties, missing or corrupt entries, audio changes, and whether playback repeats or ends as intended.
- Observe a sustained run. Check that the source advances, audio remains present, output quality is acceptable, and YouTube reports healthy stream status. Record dropped frames, encoder overload, and reconnect events rather than relying on a successful initial connection.
- Plan recovery beyond reconnect. Decide what should happen after a process exit, network outage, power failure, or host restart. Use an operating-system-appropriate process monitor or supervisor and verify its behavior in a test. No encoder setting alone covers every failure.
How to choose—and how to compare fairly
- Choose FFmpeg when a scripted, fixed-purpose media pipeline is the better fit and you are prepared to configure and supervise it.
- Choose OBS when the graphical scene and operator workflow is important. If CPU encoding is the bottleneck, consider a compatible hardware encoder, then check both encoding and rendering performance.
- Test both if CPU or reliability decides the choice. Keep machine, files, output settings, network, and test duration the same. Compare resource use, frame behavior, transitions, reconnects, stream health, and output—not just whether each connects once.
