Hindi audio does not require special FFmpeg bitrate settings: YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are based on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For a common SDR H.264 stream, start with CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo; use the bitrate that fits your video and sustained upload capacity. Keeping a stream live around the clock also requires monitoring and a recovery plan—a command alone cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
Choose settings for the video, not its language
YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. The cited guidance does not treat Hindi as a separate encoder setting. Choose an output profile according to the source material, the encoder support in your FFmpeg build, and what your connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings list 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. AAC is a practical choice for the example below; YouTube also lists MP3. Preserve the source’s aspect ratio and avoid upscaling low-resolution footage in pursuit of a larger number.
H.264 bitrate starting points
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommendation | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | Lower upload demand and encoder load; less detail than 1080p, which can matter for documentary captions, archival labels, or fine visual detail. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | More picture detail, with a higher sustained upload requirement. |
These are YouTube-published recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or proof that a particular connection can hold the stream. Test upload capacity and leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the connection’s measured maximum. Try representative footage—movement, cuts, captions, and the actual Hindi audio mix—before relying on the stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and movement. Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in its stream settings. Labels and availability can vary with the channel’s Live access and current Studio interface.
- Use the RTMPS destination when YouTube provides it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. YouTube’s RTMPS recommendation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, paste it into a public script repository, or share a screenshot that exposes it. YouTube describes the key as password-like and instructs creators to enter the stream URL and key in their encoder. YouTube stream settings guidance.
FFmpeg command for a file-based stream
This template takes one video file, encodes H.264 at 1080p30 with a 10 Mbps target, sends AAC stereo audio, and publishes to an RTMPS URL. Replace the input, frame size if needed, and output URL with values appropriate to your source and Live Control Room. The URL pattern and stream-key placement can differ by ingest configuration; use the exact destination details shown by YouTube.
ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT.mp4"
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
-r 30 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -minrate 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds. For 720p30 H.264, scale and pad to 1280×720 and change the video bitrate values to 6M; retain the two-second keyframe interval. If the source is not 16:9, the scale-and-pad filter adds borders rather than cropping the image. If you need a different frame rate or resolution, keep it aligned with the source and YouTube’s applicable codec-specific recommendations.

FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so input options such as -re belong before -i, and encoding and muxer options belong before the output URL. Check that your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and supports the selected protocols before treating the template as ready to run. The command assumes the input contains an audio stream; if it does not, remove the audio options or provide an audio source. FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Use a keyframe interval that matches frame rate
The example uses 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP for the recommended two-second interval. At another frame rate, calculate approximately two seconds of frames—for example, 50 frames at 25 fps. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Do not copy the 60-frame values unchanged to a different frame rate if you need the same interval.

Keep credentials out of shell history
Putting a real stream key directly in a command can leave it in shell history or visible to other local users and process-inspection tools. Use a protected configuration, environment-specific secret handling, or another private method appropriate to your system. Do not put a real key in a public command example or log; rotate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
Keep the stream running and recover sensibly
A continuous broadcast depends on the computer, input file, network, FFmpeg process, and YouTube ingest all remaining healthy. Use a machine and connection intended for long-running operation, watch FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages, and have a way to restart or intervene when the process or ingest fails. For a fixed installation, wired Ethernet is an optional reliability measure; it is not a YouTube requirement.

FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer example that can continue real-time processing during temporary network failures and attempt recovery. The exact behavior depends on the FFmpeg build and configuration, so test it on the system you will actually use rather than assuming a generic command guarantees recovery. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.
Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast becomes one complete archived video. YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that a longer stream will be archived as a single complete video. YouTube encoder setup help.

Test before leaving it unattended
- Run the exact FFmpeg build, file, bitrate, and destination you plan to use.
- Check YouTube’s stream preview and health messages for dropped frames, ingest trouble, audio problems, or unexpected output.
- Listen for intelligible dialogue and balanced levels; inspect captions or on-screen text at the intended playback size.
- Test a representative section with movement and audio, then observe a longer run to expose issues that a brief launch may not reveal.
- Confirm your recovery procedure: how you will notice a failure, restart FFmpeg, and verify that YouTube is receiving the stream again.
For documentary material, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream the video, soundtrack, and any archival material, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. A technically valid encode does not establish permission to rebroadcast content.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong stream URL or key, incompatible ingest destination, or network/protocol issue. | Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream, use its RTMPS destination if available, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error. |
| Repeated buffering or dropped frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the configured bitrate, or the encoder cannot keep up. | Test sustained upload capacity; lower resolution or bitrate to a sustainable profile and check CPU load. Do not treat a brief speed test as a guarantee of long-run stability. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | The input has no audio stream, the wrong track is selected, or the source format/levels need attention. | Inspect the input streams, verify the chosen audio track, and test AAC stereo output and levels in the preview before the full run. |
| Image has borders or looks stretched | The source aspect ratio differs from the chosen output frame. | The example preserves aspect ratio and pads to 16:9. Choose dimensions matching the source or deliberately choose a crop; avoid accidental stretching. |
| Stream stops after a network interruption | The publishing process or ingest did not recover automatically. | Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube health, then restart or apply a tested FIFO/recovery setup. Do not assume the FIFO example behaves identically in every build. |
