To stream a folder of videos to YouTube in a defined order, use a small GStreamer application to sort the files and advance a playback pipeline through their absolute file URIs. Then connect that playback to a live output chain that matches the protocol and settings of your YouTube event. gst-launch-1.0 can run a pipeline, but it does not itself scan and sort a folder or manage a playlist.
What the pipeline needs to do
There are two separate jobs: select and play each local video in order, then encode and deliver the resulting audio and video to YouTube. GStreamer’s playbin provides URI-based playback; your application supplies the ordered playlist and controls which URI plays next. For RTMP delivery, the documented GStreamer building blocks include H.264 video encoding, FLV muxing, and rtmpsink. The exact graph depends on your media and installed plugins.
GStreamer describes playbin as “a stand-alone everything-in-one abstraction for an audio and/or video player.” That does not mean it scans a folder, sorts files, or configures a YouTube broadcast. GStreamer playbin documentation.
1. Make the folder order explicit
Choose an ordering rule
Do not rely on the order returned by a filesystem directory listing. Choose lexicographic filename order, a numbered naming scheme, or an explicit playlist file, and sort accordingly in your application. Plain string sorting can put video10 before video2; use a natural numeric sort or an explicit playlist if that would be wrong.

Convert paths to absolute file URIs
Keep the sorted absolute paths in an array and convert each to a valid absolute file:// URI before assigning it to playbin. The uri property requires an absolute URI and supports local file URIs. See GStreamer playbin documentation.
2. Advance through the playlist
Set the next URI before the current video ends
Maintain the current playlist index in application state. Connect to playbin‘s about-to-finish signal and assign the next file’s URI there, before the current item ends. This can allow a gapless handoff where the media and pipeline permit it; it is not guaranteed for arbitrary files or every pipeline. The signal and playlist approach are described in GStreamer’s playbin design documentation. Handle errors and the end of the list deliberately
Listen to the GStreamer bus for error and end-of-stream messages. Decide what should happen when the final file ends: stop the broadcast, restart the playlist, or advance according to an explicit repeat policy. Do not leave end-of-list behavior to chance. The playbin documentation describes bus notifications for errors and end-of-stream.

This playlist control belongs in an application. There is no official folder-scanning gst-launch-1.0 command that sorts a directory and manages the sequence on its own.

3. Build the live output chain
For an RTMP-based YouTube event, the conceptual path is:
- Decode the selected video’s audio and video.
- Convert or resample as needed for the chosen output format.
- Encode video to a format accepted by the event. GStreamer’s
x264encencodes raw video as H.264; check the encoder’s installed version and available settings. GStreamer x264enc documentation. - Encode audio to a format accepted by the event’s ingest settings.
- Mux audio and video into FLV and send the output to
rtmpsink. GStreamer’s RTMP sink documentation shows an FLV-muxed route to a streaming server: GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.
This is a design outline, not a tested, universal pipeline string. Element names, caps, and connections vary with your source codecs, desired output, GStreamer version, and installed plugins. Check that the source, decoder, converter, encoder, muxer, and sink elements you plan to use are available in your installation.

Encoding versus copying existing streams
If the files already contain compatible encoded streams, remuxing or copying them may be possible. The documentation cited here does not establish that stream-copy playback will work seamlessly across arbitrary files with different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layouts. If predictable output matters, use a consistent encode path and validate it against the actual playlist.
Account for encoder latency
GStreamer notes that some x264enc settings—including defaults—can add latency because the encoder buffers frames. Tune and test for your use case rather than assuming a zero-latency setting is always best: latency, image quality, CPU load, and stability involve trade-offs. See the x264enc documentation.
4. Match YouTube’s ingest protocol and event
Use the event’s configured stream details
Use the ingest protocol and stream URL configured for the specific YouTube live event, and treat the stream key as a secret. YouTube’s Live Streams API describes ingest type and primary and backup stream URLs as stream configuration details: YouTube Live Streams API: liveStreams. For an RTMP route, consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for accepted codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; do not assume one fixed profile applies to every event. RTMP and HLS are not interchangeable pipeline recipes
GStreamer’s rtmpsink route uses continuous delivery with an FLV muxer. HLS is segment-based and has different requirements. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies MPEG-TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range playlist; it also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. The 1–4-second and five-segment limits are HLS configuration requirements, not general RTMP settings. See YouTube HLS ingestion guidance and YouTube HLS ingestion guide.
If the event is configured for HLS, an RTMP/FLV output chain is not a substitute: follow the event’s HLS ingest requirements, including its supported formats and closed-GOP requirements. Select the protocol in YouTube Live Control Room and build the GStreamer output accordingly.

- Inspect representative files for codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio channels, and sample rate.
- Confirm your GStreamer build has every required source, decoder, converter, encoder, muxer, and sink element.
- Run a suitable private or otherwise controlled validation stream using the intended event protocol and settings.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and address reported problems before relying on the broadcast. The Live Streams API also includes health status: YouTube Live Streams API: liveStreams.
GStreamer plugin availability and element properties vary by installation and version. YouTube ingest settings and supported formats can change, so verify them for the event rather than treating an old configuration as permanent.

6. Check copyright and reused-content risks
A technically healthy stream does not establish that you have permission to broadcast every file or that a channel will qualify for monetization. Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s rules on copyright and reused content. A folder’s contents do not become eligible for broadcasting or monetization merely because they can be played in sequence. You can use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight resource.
