For a simple unattended loop of prerecorded videos, FFmpeg is usually the more natural fit if you can manage command-line configuration, logging and recovery. Choose OBS if you want a graphical control room for scenes, overlays and hands-on changes. Neither choice guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation: you must keep the computer or server running, maintain a stable upload connection, monitor stream health and plan for recovery. If you would rather not run an encoder at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube.
FFmpeg vs. OBS: which should you choose?
| Consideration | FFmpeg | OBS |
|---|---|---|
| Control style | Best suited to operators comfortable with command lines and configuration files. | Best suited to operators who prefer a desktop interface and visible controls. |
| Content workflow | Useful when the main job is feeding prerecorded media to an encoder, including scripted sequencing. | Useful when you need scenes, visual sources, overlays or hands-on changes during the broadcast. |
| Automation and oversight | You need to operate and supervise a long-running process, including your own logging and recovery setup. | You configure a desktop streaming scene and monitor it interactively; the host must remain running. |
| Maintenance | You maintain the host, process and stream configuration. | You maintain the OBS host and respond to its status and alerts. |
These are workflow distinctions, not measured comparisons of uptime, CPU use, cost or ease. YouTube’s encoder guidance applies to either application and does not endorse one over the other. OBS documents dropped-frame and connection-status diagnostics; neither tool is inherently more reliable without testing it under your workload. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Choose FFmpeg for a mostly static loop
FFmpeg makes sense when you can manage a long-running command-line process and want a repeatable, automation-friendly way to send prerecorded media. You are responsible for the host, process supervision, logs and restart behavior. This route offers control, but it also requires you to design and maintain those operational pieces.
Choose OBS for visual control
OBS is a better fit when you want to arrange scenes and visual sources, add overlays, or make changes interactively while live. It is still a desktop application: a continuous broadcast depends on the computer, OBS and network connection remaining available, and on you noticing and addressing problems.

What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube states that the minimum age for live streaming is 16.
- Prerecorded video and audio you have the necessary rights to stream. An encoder does not provide music or other content rights.
- A computer or server that can stay on, a stable upload connection, and time to test the full workflow.
- A recovery and monitoring plan, plus a local recording or planned shorter sessions if preserving the complete broadcast matters.
YouTube requires live-stream content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check current eligibility and rules in YouTube’s live-streaming help before setting up a channel for continuous streaming.
Set YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video ingestion, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. For the keyframe interval, use 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, so check the live settings table when you configure a new stream.

H.264 video bitrate recommendations
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
Those figures are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for the listed modes; they do not mean your connection can sustain them. YouTube also publishes setting ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Use its current encoder guidance for those codecs and recheck the table before going live, since platform recommendations can change.
Test the actual broadcast configuration
Test with the media, audio, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and upload path you plan to use continuously. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. In OBS, rising dropped-frame counts and a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps if you see those symptoms.

Set up and run the stream
- Confirm YouTube eligibility and content rights. Verify that live streaming is available on your channel, and check that you have the rights needed for every video and audio track.
- Create a live stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, use the Create button, choose Go live, then create or select the stream. Copy its server URL and stream key from the stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup can change, so follow the labels shown in Studio and its encoder setup guide.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat it as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, set up the video source or media workflow, output resolution and frame rate, CBR video bitrate, 2-second keyframes, supported video and audio codecs, and YouTube’s server URL and stream key. In FFmpeg, configure the input or playlist, output codec and bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and RTMPS destination and key. Use YouTube’s current settings recommendations for your chosen mode.
- Start a test stream and inspect YouTube Studio. Confirm that video and sound are correct, the stream health is acceptable, and the stream is reaching the intended live page before relying on it unattended.
- Plan how you will keep it running. Keep the encoder host and network available, monitor stream health, retain useful logs, and decide how you will respond to a stopped process or dropped connection. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring but does not prescribe a universal recovery system.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on your input files, playlist behavior, codecs, operating system and desired output. There is no single command that can safely stand in for those details. Build and test the command for your media and confirm that its RTMPS output, bitrate and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance. For OBS, use the application’s visible stream and output settings and verify them against the same requirements.
Plan for 24/7 operation, archives and DVR
A continuous session has consequences beyond encoder settings. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed replay. If a complete recording matters, keep a local recording or consider planned shorter sessions. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; that affects viewers rewinding during the live broadcast and is separate from the archive warning. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Continuous operation also depends on more than the encoder: power, operating-system updates, hardware, storage, the process itself and the upload connection can all interrupt a self-managed stream. YouTube does not specify a universal failover design. Choose monitoring and recovery methods appropriate to the machine and operating system you run, and test how they behave before relying on them.

Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to exploit the video and audio on Google services, including applicable music rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms put that responsibility on the provider. Neither FFmpeg nor OBS grants permission, and permission to use content is not the same as eligibility for monetization.

YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. In a July 15, 2025 clarification, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and explained that repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Reused content is assessed at channel level; it may need significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Permission alone does not ensure monetization eligibility, and no particular channel’s review outcome can be predicted. YouTube says: “Our reviewers will check your channel and content against our policies.” Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or a yellow/red OBS connection indicator | The upload connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Check the connection and configured bitrate; test again at a setting your upload path can sustain. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting. |
| YouTube does not receive a picture or sound | The input, output settings, server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the selected file may not be playing as expected. | Check the source or media workflow, audio output, codec settings, RTMPS destination and key. Test in Studio before leaving the stream unattended. |
| The stream stops after a process or application failure | The encoder or host has stopped, and no recovery action is configured. | Inspect the application status and logs, restore the process or host, then verify that YouTube receives a healthy stream. Design and test recovery for your own environment; there is no universal YouTube-prescribed restart stack. |
| A replay is missing or incomplete | The continuous session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Do not rely on an archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording or plan shorter sessions if preserving the replay is important. |
| A long live stream offers limited rewind | DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams over 12 hours. | Account for this viewer limitation separately from whether YouTube archives the stream. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a YouTube live stream run longer than 12 hours?
Yes, but YouTube warns that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
Does using OBS or FFmpeg make a prerecorded loop eligible for monetization?
No. YouTube assesses monetization under its channel policies; using an encoder or having content permission does not guarantee eligibility.
