Why does Jill Gideon return to the BAU?
The team needs knowledge connected to a paper Jill and Jason Gideon wrote, which becomes relevant to the Gold Star investigation. Jill’s expertise in biological psychology makes her a useful source of insight, but her return is also personal: she is drawn back into a world she had left behind.
Huffman described Jill’s view of the work as having left it “behind as a dumpster fire.” She connected that attitude to Jill’s failed marriage and Gideon’s murder, while suggesting a sense of responsibility helped bring Jill back. That is Huffman’s interpretation of her character, rather than a separate statement about the show’s intended meaning.

What is the history between Jill Gideon and Rossi?
Jill and David Rossi have a charged personal history. Huffman characterized their dynamic as one in which they love and hate each other. Mantegna likened it to the combative romantic pairing in the 1952 film Pat and Mike. Their encounter in “Piranha” takes place in what used to be Gideon’s office, giving the reunion a direct connection to Jill’s past with Jason. TV Insider’s recap describes the closing scene.
Had Felicity Huffman and Joe Mantegna worked together before?
Yes. The actors recalled having worked together on films in the 1990s. Mantegna said, “Felicity and I go way back, so it was exciting,” describing his real-life reunion with Huffman. That history is separate from the fictional relationship between Jill and Rossi.

Is Felicity Huffman returning to Criminal Minds: Evolution?
A return after Jill’s Season 17 storyline has not been confirmed in the cited official announcements. Paramount Press Express says Season 19 premiered on May 28, 2026, and Season 20 was greenlit for 2027, but that announcement does not establish whether Huffman will appear in either season. Paramount’s Season 19 and Season 20 announcement names guest stars as examples and includes “and many more,” so its list should not be read as proof that Huffman is absent.
