Brad Pitt and Damson Idris are the spark in F1 The Movie. Early reactions praise their contrast—Pitt’s veteran cool against Idris’s rookie intensity—alongside Joseph Kosinski’s large-scale racing spectacle. The story may follow familiar sports-drama lines, but real Grand Prix filming and the leads’ chemistry give the movie a substantial theatrical charge.
The early verdict on F1 The Movie is clear: Brad Pitt and Damson Idris give the film its emotional acceleration, while Joseph Kosinski’s race sequences provide the genuine theatrical rush. Critics have repeatedly described the pairing as “electric” because Pitt’s unhurried veteran cool plays against Idris’s restless rookie intensity. The film’s comeback story is familiar, but its real-Grand-Prix production setting and large-format spectacle make that formula unusually watchable.
That distinction matters. The strongest early reactions are not claiming that F1 The Movie reinvents the sports drama. They are saying that it delivers the elements audiences expect from a major racing blockbuster—speed, sound, scale, stars and a clear emotional rivalry—with enough conviction to make the familiar beats feel fresh in motion.
What is F1 The Movie about?
Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 driver whose career was derailed by a serious accident. Years later, Sonny is persuaded to return to the sport by his former teammate, Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem. Ruben now owns APXGP, a fictional team struggling to compete at the highest level.

Damson Idris plays Joshua Pearce, APXGP’s gifted but inexperienced rookie. Joshua has speed and ambition, but not yet the judgment or emotional control expected of a Formula 1 driver. Sonny’s arrival gives the team a chance to recover, but it also creates a generational collision: the older driver has already experienced the sport’s danger and humiliation, while the younger one is determined to prove that he belongs.
The setup follows a recognizable underdog structure. A failing team needs results, a veteran is given one more opportunity, and a talented young competitor must learn to work with someone who initially looks like a rival. That accessibility is one reason the film can appeal beyond established Formula 1 fans. Viewers do not need to know every regulation or team hierarchy to understand the central question: can Sonny and Joshua turn their conflicting instincts into a winning partnership?
Why critics called Pitt and Idris “electric”
The phrase is about contrast as much as chemistry. Sonny is composed, experienced and apparently comfortable with the risks he has already taken. Joshua is more volatile: ambitious, impatient and eager to establish himself before anyone can dismiss him as a rookie.
Pitt brings the relaxed movie-star presence expected of the veteran lead. Sonny can appear almost too calm, especially when the people around him are under pressure. Idris supplies the counterforce. His Joshua is not simply a passenger in Sonny’s comeback story; he has his own pride, pace and need for recognition.

That gives the driving scenes a dramatic stake beyond the question of which car crosses the finish line first. Every disagreement between the two drivers carries a professional risk. Sonny’s instinct is shaped by experience, while Joshua’s instinct is shaped by the need to make an impression. Their rivalry gradually becomes a reluctant partnership, and the tension between those positions is the film’s central source of energy.
Early reactions therefore pair the actors rather than treating Pitt’s star power as the entire attraction. Pitt supplies the coolness; Idris supplies the impatience. The combination gives the film a more dynamic center than a conventional mentor-and-rookie pairing might have had.

The racing is the film’s strongest selling point
The most consistent praise has been reserved for the racing footage. F1 The Movie was shot during actual Grand Prix weekends, with the fictional APXGP team integrated into real Formula 1 environments. Formula 1’s own coverage of the production has emphasized the effort to place the film inside the championship’s visual and operational world rather than constructing every racing location on a conventional studio set.
That approach helps explain the emphasis in first reactions on speed, engine noise, physical proximity and scale. The film is designed as a theatrical event. Its racing does not merely illustrate the plot; it is the primary sensory experience the movie is selling.

Joseph Kosinski’s previous work on Top Gun: Maverick is an obvious point of comparison. As with that film, the appeal lies in making high-risk motion legible and immediate while preserving the sense that the performers are being tested by the environment. The racing has a practical, physical feel that is difficult to achieve when action is presented only as weightless digital imagery.
There is an important qualification, however. The film is fiction, not a documentary account of Formula 1. Its races, strategies and team decisions are shaped by the needs of a dramatic story. Filming within real Grand Prix settings gives the movie a more credible texture; it does not mean that every plot development represents how an actual Formula 1 team would behave under the sport’s regulations.
What the early reviews praised
- Brad Pitt’s charisma: Reviews commonly identify his easy, seasoned presence as one of the film’s main crowd-pleasing qualities. He makes Sonny feel like a driver with history without requiring the audience to absorb a long biography first.
- Damson Idris’s energy: Idris gives Joshua enough attitude and momentum to function as a genuine co-lead. The rookie is not reduced to a generic obstacle in Sonny’s comeback.
- The racing sequences: The visual scale, sound design and kinetic movement are the most consistently celebrated aspects of the film.
- Kosinski’s action control: The director understands how to turn speed into a readable dramatic experience, maintaining the sense of risk while keeping the action accessible.
- A straightforward emotional framework: The comeback and underdog structure makes the stakes easy to follow, including for viewers who are not experts in Formula 1.
For documentary-minded viewers, the production’s relationship with real Formula 1 may be especially interesting. The film is not an observational work, but it borrows some of the sport’s real-world texture: recognizable Grand Prix surroundings, the presence of an active championship and the visual pressure of competing in an environment that is not entirely invented for the camera.
Where the film may disappoint
The principal caveat is not a lack of excitement. It is predictability.

Several early reviews describe the narrative as familiar, conventional or formulaic even while praising the action. The film uses the established machinery of the sports blockbuster: a damaged veteran, a team in danger, a young driver who must mature, internal conflict and a series of increasingly consequential races.
That structure can be a strength if the goal is a broadly accessible summer film. It provides a clear emotional route through a technically complicated sport. But viewers looking for a revisionist Formula 1 story, a detailed examination of the championship’s politics or a psychologically unusual racing drama may find the screenplay less surprising than the filmmaking around it.
The most balanced assessment is that F1 The Movie does not reinvent the comeback story. Instead, it executes the spectacle with unusual force and gives Pitt and Idris enough screen energy to make familiar material feel bigger and more urgent than an ordinary sports drama.
Is it accessible if you do not follow Formula 1?
Yes, based on the film’s premise and the broad early critical response. The story establishes its stakes through character relationships rather than requiring detailed knowledge of the championship. You need to understand that APXGP is an underfunded fictional team, that Sonny is a former star attempting a return and that Joshua is a rookie trying to prove himself. The film’s basic conflict is readable even if you cannot explain every technical decision made during a race.
Experienced fans may notice that some sporting situations are simplified or heightened for dramatic momentum. That is a normal trade-off for a fictional blockbuster. The film’s most defensible authenticity claim is that it was produced inside real Grand Prix settings and pursued an immediate racing texture—not that it is a literal record of Formula 1 competition.
Release and viewing context

For collectors, the film also received physical editions in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. Reporting identified October 7, 2025 as the physical-media release date. Before purchasing, confirm the edition, disc format, region compatibility, seller and current price. The F1 The Movie 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is the most direct physical-media option for viewers who want the film’s image and sound presentation at home, but the current listing and stock should be checked at publication time.
Beyond the film: APXGP merchandise and related releases
The fictional team’s black-and-gold identity has also been extended into fan products. Formula 1 announced APXGP hoodies, T-shirts and hats through the official F1 Store. These items make more sense as film merchandise than as general Formula 1 equipment: APXGP is the movie’s fictional team, not a replacement for an actual championship constructor.
Mattel’s official Hot Wheels range includes an APXGP vehicle modeled on Sonny Hayes’s film car, including its black-and-gold livery. That makes the model a particularly natural companion for viewers interested in the car’s design or in small-scale film collectibles.
The film’s musical identity has a separate physical-media path. The official F1 The Album store lists CD and vinyl editions. These are better suited to a soundtrack or memorabilia purchase than to the central critical question, but they extend the film’s appeal beyond its theatrical presentation.
There is also an interactive tie-in. EA SPORTS partnered F1 25 with Team APXGP and described film-inspired content involving Sonny Hayes and Joshua Pearce. The game is an optional extension for people who want to continue the racing experience interactively; it is not necessary to understand or appreciate the movie.

Brad Pitt gives Sonny Hayes the confidence of a driver who has already seen the sport’s best and worst moments. Damson Idris gives Joshua Pearce the impatience of someone who believes his chance is arriving now. Their friction makes the racing personal, while Kosinski’s direction supplies the scale and immediacy expected from a major theatrical release.
The plot may run on familiar racing lines, but Pitt and Idris give F1 The Movie the charge its title promises.
