Usually, yes—for the expanded picture, but not necessarily for the sound. Selected Disney+ films can show IMAX’s taller framing on supported Disney+ devices, even if your TV has no IMAX Enhanced badge. Getting IMAX Enhanced DTS:X audio is a narrower case: the title, service, playback device, region and audio setup must all support it. The badge alone does not guarantee the complete experience.
What IMAX Enhanced means at home
IMAX Enhanced is a program developed by IMAX and DTS for selected films and compatible home-entertainment equipment. Depending on the title and service, it can involve a specially prepared presentation, expanded picture framing and DTS:X immersive audio. Certification also sets picture and sound performance targets for devices; it is not a TV mode that turns every movie into an IMAX presentation. DTS’s overview of IMAX Enhanced describes the program and its device and content ecosystem.
It is also not the same as attending an IMAX screening. A home release does not recreate a theater’s screen size, projection, acoustics or seating, and a streaming version does not necessarily use every aspect ratio seen in an IMAX venue.

Think of it as three compatibility layers

These layers explain why a film can look taller than a conventional widescreen version while its audio menu offers no DTS:X option.

What changes in the picture?
The most obvious change is aspect ratio: an IMAX version may show more of the image vertically than a conventional widescreen presentation, reducing black bars on a widescreen TV. The exact result depends on how the film was shot, mastered and distributed. Some titles use expanded framing only in selected scenes; others may show little visible difference.
Home presentations commonly use an expanded ratio such as 1.90:1. A 1.43:1 presentation is not guaranteed on streaming. The ratio is part of the version supplied by the service, not something the television can invent. If a title was not prepared with expanded framing, selecting a TV picture mode cannot restore image area that is not in the source.
Does your TV need an IMAX Enhanced badge?
Not necessarily to see the expanded picture on Disney+. Disney says the expanded IMAX aspect ratio is supported on all devices that support Disney+. That means a compatible TV or streaming device may show the expanded image without being certified as IMAX Enhanced. Disney+’s support page distinguishes that picture support from its more restricted DTS:X feature.

Disney’s published guidance limits IMAX Enhanced sound to selected Android TV devices, naming supported devices from manufacturers including Sony, Hisense, Sharp and Xiaomi. Do not assume every TV from one of those brands qualifies: the exact model, operating-system version, firmware, app, territory, language and title can matter. Sony likewise warns that a title may not expose DTS:X if the specific TV model does not support it (Sony support).

If you already own a TV, look up its full model number on the manufacturer’s support site. Check for support for IMAX Enhanced or DTS:X for streaming, and confirm that the relevant app works on the TV itself. A general claim that a device can decode DTS audio is not proof that Disney+ will provide its IMAX Enhanced DTS:X stream.
How to try IMAX Enhanced on Disney+
- Update your TV or playback device’s software and the Disney+ app.
- Open Disney+ on the device you plan to use. Search for a title identified as IMAX Enhanced, or browse the relevant IMAX collection if it appears in your region.
- Check the title details for format information, then start playback.
- During playback, open the audio and subtitle menu. If the title and device qualify, select the available DTS:X or IMAX Enhanced audio option.
- If you use a receiver or soundbar, check its information display for the incoming format. The playback menu and the audio system’s signal report together are more useful than the TV’s marketing badge alone.
Disney says the DTS:X feature must be enabled during playback on a supported Android TV device. Availability can vary by title, territory, device and language; a menu without DTS:X does not by itself indicate a fault.
Check the picture and sound separately
- Picture: Compare the image with the conventional widescreen presentation if possible. Look for additional vertical image area, and make sure the TV is not zooming, cropping or overscanning. There may be no permanent “IMAX mode” in the TV’s picture menu.
- Sound: Confirm that the title actually carries the feature, that the app exposes DTS:X, and that the receiving device reports the expected format. If Sony’s title details do not show DTS:X, Sony says the TV model may not support it.
Other services and Sony Pictures Core
IMAX Enhanced titles are also associated with services including Sony Pictures Core, Tencent Video, iQIYI and Rakuten TV. Catalogs, countries, apps and supported formats differ, so a title or DTS:X stream on one service should not be assumed to exist on another. IMAX’s program page describes the wider ecosystem.
Sony Pictures Core is Sony’s current service name; some older product material refers to BRAVIA CORE. Compatible Sony televisions can offer IMAX Enhanced content through Sony Pictures Core, but eligibility is model-specific. Sony’s support information also highlights generation differences: some 2021 and 2022 BRAVIA models may offer DTS Digital Surround Sound rather than DTS:X for relevant Sony Pictures Core content (Sony Pictures Core support). That service’s catalog and capabilities are separate from Disney+ availability.

What audio equipment do you need?
The playback app and device are often the first constraint. An IMAX Enhanced receiver or soundbar cannot make Disney+ send DTS:X if the service is running on a device that does not qualify for that stream. Once the source supports it, the rest of the connection must also handle the format.
- TV speakers: A supported TV may process the stream for its own speakers, but built-in speakers cannot create the same surround field as a properly configured multichannel system.
- Soundbar: Check that both TV and soundbar can handle the relevant format over the chosen connection. eARC can be important for higher-bandwidth audio paths, but the result depends on the TV, app, soundbar and signal settings.
- AV receiver and speakers: A DTS:X-capable receiver and suitable speaker layout can make better use of immersive audio. The service’s playback device still needs to deliver the stream, and the HDMI path must pass it correctly.
Not every component must carry the IMAX Enhanced badge. What matters is that the source, service, title and signal path support the format you want.

The expanded picture appears, but DTS:X does not
This can be normal. The TV may support the picture but not Disney+’s DTS:X implementation; the title may not have the mix; the app or firmware may need an update; or availability may differ by country or language. If you launched Disney+ from an external streamer, try the TV’s native app if it is supported. Check the exact model’s documentation before changing audio equipment.

Receiver certification does not guarantee that the streaming service will deliver a DTS:X stream. Check the playback device and app first, then the title’s audio options, and finally the HDMI/eARC configuration.

The picture looks like an ordinary widescreen version
Confirm that you chose the IMAX version of the title, if the service offers a format label or separate edition. Check for TV zoom or overscan settings. Also account for scenes that switch between aspect ratios or films whose expanded framing makes only a modest difference.
You are using an external device
A device may play Disney+ and show the expanded picture without being eligible for Disney+ IMAX Enhanced DTS:X. Do not infer audio support from the device’s ability to stream 4K, its brand, or generic DTS decoding. Check the service’s current compatibility information for the exact playback device.
Should you buy a new TV for IMAX Enhanced?
Usually, the expanded picture alone is not a strong reason to replace a working TV: Disney says it is available on supported Disney+ devices without requiring an IMAX Enhanced-certified display. If you want DTS:X, verify the exact TV model and full playback chain before spending money.
When comparing TVs, treat IMAX Enhanced as one factor alongside overall brightness, contrast, HDR performance, screen size, HDMI/eARC connections, smart-platform support and firmware policy. If immersive audio is the priority, establish that the source device and service can supply DTS:X before buying a soundbar or receiver. A certification label indicates compatibility targets; it does not guarantee that every title will look or sound different, or that a home setup will match a theater.
