“Everything Under the Sun”: How the Fallout Show Uses Game Lore to Tell a New Story

The Fallout series shares the games’ universe but tells a new story. Here are the creator-stated adaptation principles and the lore connections Bethesda confirms.

Fallout draws on the games’ shared universe, factions, creatures and visual language, but its television story is original—not a retelling of one game. The creators’ stated goal was to move the timeline forward while keeping the setting recognizable, and Bethesda’s own guide identifies several concrete connections between Season 1 and the games. Those confirmed links are more reliable than treating every familiar-looking prop or background detail as a creator-verified Easter egg.

Is the Fallout show part of the games’ continuity?

Yes. Bethesda describes the series as part of the same universe as its roleplaying games. Its launch description introduces Lucy, a resident of Vault 33, and places the story more than 200 years after the end of the world. Bethesda’s series announcement establishes that broad setting connection; it does not mean the show adapts a game’s plot beat for beat.

The creators said they wanted to build a new story inside that established world. Executive producer and Bethesda Game Studios executive Todd Howard put the choice this way: “We wanted to move the timeline forward and tell a new story in the world because the world of Fallout has always been the main character in our games.” Howard’s comments in an Amazon feature frame the setting—not a particular player character’s quest—as the continuity the series carries forward.

Co-showrunner Graham Wagner said joining the existing continuity was the team’s assumption from the start. He also pointed to the games’ precedent: earlier installments could tell different stories without retelling one another. Wagner described the show as making a new space in that world, rather than remaking Fallout 3, Fallout 4 or another single installment.

How did the creators balance lore with an original story?

Executive producer and co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet said: “We knew right from the start that we didn’t want to copy exactly one of the stories from the video games,” Robertson-Dworet told About Amazon. The show can therefore draw on established institutions and ideas while following its own characters and conflicts.

That approach also shaped how the story introduces the Wasteland. Lucy is new to it, so viewers can learn alongside her rather than needing prior knowledge of the games. Robertson-Dworet explained: “we wanted to be faithful to that. And it was also beneficial to us structurally, because it gave us a point-of-view character who was experiencing the Wasteland for the first time, who would have a lot of the questions that new members of the audience would have, who were non-gamers who were coming to the show for the first time.” In a Popverse interview, she discussed how that perspective helped orient an audience unfamiliar with the games.

The show also aims to preserve the franchise’s tonal contrast: bleak consequences and danger alongside dark comedy. Howard described the look as a future imagined through mid-century ideas about nuclear power, robots and nuclear-powered cars, set against the harshness of the wasteland. Amazon reports that Bethesda shared game meshes and artwork with the production team, helping translate the games’ retro-futurist visual language to television. Amazon’s behind-the-scenes feature discusses that design work.

Which Season 1 connections does Bethesda confirm?

Bethesda’s official guide to the show and games connects several Season 1 elements directly to franchise lore. These are documented examples, not a promise that every prop, sign or visual resemblance has a public creator explanation.

Vault 33 and Vault-Tec experiments

Season 1 centers on Vault 33, while Bethesda places its drama in the games’ wider pattern of Vault-Tec experiments. The guide points to Fallout 4’s Vault 111, whose experiment involved long-term cryostasis, and Vault 76 from Fallout 76 as game examples. Those comparisons provide context for the show’s vault story; they do not mean Vault 111 or Vault 101 appears in the series.

Brotherhood of Steel, Enclave and the New California Republic

Bethesda identifies the Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave among the factions introduced in Season 1, with the New California Republic appearing briefly. In the games, faction conflicts can shape a player’s choices and storyline; Bethesda names Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 as examples. The show uses these familiar groups within its own narrative rather than reproducing a player’s faction path.

Ghouls and the Ghoul

Bethesda describes ghouls as humans changed by radiation and chems. The games, including Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas, feature ghoul characters with individual stories. That shared concept helps place the show’s Ghoul in the franchise’s world; it does not make his television storyline a direct adaptation of a game character’s quest.

CX404 and Dogmeat

Bethesda identifies CX404, the dog in the show, as a Dogmeat connection. Dogmeat appears in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. The guide also notes that River, a German Shepherd belonging to former Bethesda lead level designer Joel Burgess, played Fallout 4’s Dogmeat. This is a documented connection, not confirmation that every dog cameo or visual detail in the series is an Easter egg.

What changes when the story moves to the Mojave?

Bethesda says Season 2 moves to the Mojave, the setting of Fallout: New Vegas, and calls that game a must-play for viewers who want to explore the same landscape as Lucy and the Ghoul. That makes it a useful optional companion for the setting—not homework required to follow Season 1. The guide establishes the Mojave connection, but it does not establish current retailer availability or which game editions can be played on a particular platform.

What counts as a confirmed Easter egg?

A familiar name, faction or design can signal that the series belongs to the same universe without proving that its creators intended a specific hidden reference. The clearest evidence here is a connection stated by Bethesda or a creator: for example, Bethesda’s identification of CX404 with Dogmeat, or the show’s use of Vault 33 within Vault-Tec’s broader experimental history. By contrast, a background resemblance or fan interpretation should not be presented as creator-confirmed unless a reliable source actually confirms it.

Wagner said Bethesda’s James Altman was on set daily to help the team stay true to the established canon. As Wagner put it: “And then James Altman from Bethesda was on set every day, assuring us that we were getting it right and not accidentally blowing up 25 years of canon. So, if we ever did blow up the canon, we did it with intention.” His account in the Amazon feature describes a production effort to work within the franchise, not a guarantee that every detail has been publicly explained.
