The available reporting does not identify who called them “humble” or “lauded,” so those words should be treated as an unverified characterization, not an established consensus.
What Reynolds says the owners do
In an interview reported by BBC Sport on 17 August 2025, Reynolds said: “We have a very hands-off management style.” He added: “Our job is to listen, learn, and tell the story,” and said, “We don’t make football decisions.” BBC Sport’s report presents this as the owners’ description of their approach, not an independent account of every decision made at the club.
The distinction matters: being hands-off in football matters does not mean being absent from ownership. Reynolds’s formulation emphasizes supporting the club and communicating its story while leaving football decisions to others.
Why Wrexham appealed to them
At their first press conference in Wrexham, reported by ITV News Wales on 28 October 2021, both owners pointed to the community and the town’s identity. Reynolds said: “You take a deeper dive into Wrexham, and you see how invested the community are in the club.” McElhenney said: “We love telling the story of a working class club and a working class town, because it’s a story people can identify with.” ITV News Wales reported their remarks as they discussed why they wanted to buy the club.

Reynolds also described Wrexham as “not a toy,” according to ITV. The remark underscores how the owners publicly framed the purchase: as stewardship of an institution embedded in its community, rather than simply a celebrity investment or entertainment property.
Long-term commitment, with financial limits
In 2022, McElhenney described the ownership as a lasting commitment: “Now in the last year and a half we’ve realised we’re in this for the rest of our lives,” he told BBC Sport on 22 August. He also called the owners stewards and acknowledged that moving through higher divisions could require outside capital. BBC Sport’s 2022 account therefore pairs the long-term language with a practical point: commitment does not mean the owners have unlimited personal resources or that future growth can be funded without additional investment.

How the documentary fits the story
The FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham follows the club and its owners, making the storytelling part of their public role especially visible. In a 2024 Associated Press account, the owners discussed separating their personal reactions as fans from their public responsibilities as chairmen. The Associated Press report connects the ownership story to the series, but it does not establish where the programme is currently available to stream.

The cited coverage documents how Reynolds and McElhenney have described their approach: hands-off on football decisions, attentive to Wrexham’s community, and committed to the club’s future while recognizing possible financing needs. Those statements help explain why a writer or commentator might characterize them as humble, but the available reports do not identify the speaker or occasion behind the specific “humble” and “lauded” wording. It is more accurate to treat that phrase as a prompt to examine their stated ownership philosophy than as a verified judgment shared by a named source.

The context has changed since the takeover: BBC Sport reported in August 2025 that Wrexham had become the first team in the history of English football’s top five divisions to secure three successive promotions. That achievement is a dated milestone, not proof by itself of humility or of how decisions were made behind the scenes.
