There are five released series in the Yellowstone/Dutton family saga: Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Two more projects, 1944 and 6666, have been announced but do not have verified release dates in the current official listings.
For the family chronology, watch 1883, 1923, Yellowstone, Marshals and Dutton Ranch. The last two are separate branches of the story after Yellowstone and can be watched in either order.

1. Yellowstone: the modern-day starting point
Yellowstone is the flagship series and the show that introduced the Dutton family to television audiences. It is set in the present day and follows John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner, as he tries to protect the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in Montana while managing conflict within his family and pressure from surrounding political, business and development interests.
Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are among the performers whose characters continue into the later Dutton projects. The original series ran from 2018 through 2024 and concluded with its fifth season. Its original U.S. broadcast home was Paramount Network; Paramount+’s current family guide identifies Peacock as the U.S. streaming home for Yellowstone, rather than Paramount+.
Why it matters in the larger saga: This is the central modern chapter. The prequels explain how the Dutton presence in Montana began and survived across generations, while Marshals and Dutton Ranch follow different characters after the events of the flagship.
2. 1883: the Dutton family’s origin story
1883 is the earliest released entry in the family chronology and the first Yellowstone prequel. It is a complete, 10-episode limited series that premiered on Paramount+ on December 19, 2021.

The journey eventually establishes the foundation of the Montana ranch legacy that later generations fight to preserve. The series is as much a westward-journey drama as it is a family origin story, focusing on the dangers, uncertainty and human cost of migration across the American frontier.
Tim McGraw plays James Dutton, Faith Hill plays Margaret Dutton, Isabel May plays their daughter Elsa Dutton, and Sam Elliott plays Shea Brennan. May also provides an important narrative connection to the later prequel, returning as Elsa’s narrator in 1923. Paramount+ describes 1883 as a Yellowstone origin story.
Watch it if: You want the beginning of the Dutton family’s Montana connection or a self-contained limited series rather than a long-running modern ranch saga.

3. 1923: the bridge between the origin story and Yellowstone

The series moves the story into the early twentieth century. Jacob and Cara Dutton lead the family during a period shaped by drought, Prohibition, pandemic-era disruption and the Great Depression. The ranch is no longer being established; it is an inherited responsibility that must be defended against economic hardship, violence and changing social conditions.
Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren plays Cara Dutton. Brandon Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton, while Isabel May returns as the voice of Elsa Dutton. The family connection to the modern series becomes especially important through Spencer’s line: Paramount+’s official material identifies Spencer’s son, John Dutton II, as the future father of Yellowstone’s John Dutton III. You can find the cast and family-background information in Paramount+’s 1923 series information.
Watch it after 1883 if: You want to see the next generation inherit the ranch and understand the family line leading toward John Dutton III.
4. Marshals: Kayce Dutton’s post-ranch story
Marshals is a direct sequel and spinoff of Yellowstone. It follows Kayce Dutton after the original series, as he leaves the ranch-centered family conflict and joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. Luke Grimes reprises the role of Kayce.

It was initially associated with the working title 2024 and was later presented as Y: Marshals before being released simply as Marshals. It premiered on March 1, 2026, as a CBS Original and also streams on Paramount+. Season 1 is available, and Paramount+ says the series has been renewed for Season 2.
This is not another ranch-management story in the style of the flagship. Its premise shifts the focus toward law enforcement and Kayce’s life after the events of Yellowstone. It is therefore best approached only after completing the original series.

5. Dutton Ranch: Beth and Rip start over in Texas
Dutton Ranch is the other direct sequel to Yellowstone. It centers on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they leave Montana and attempt to build a new life on a ranch in South Texas. Their ward, Carter, accompanies them.

Announced projects that are not yet watchable
1944
1944 is a planned historical prequel announced by Paramount in 2023. Its title suggests a period between 1923 and the modern-day events of Yellowstone, but the exact story, cast, episode order, production status and premiere date have not been firmly established in the current official catalog.
That makes 1944 relevant to a complete franchise guide, but not to a completed viewing order. It should be described as announced or planned—not as an upcoming release with a confirmed schedule. Trade coverage of the announcement also reflects why the project should be treated cautiously until Paramount confirms more details.
6666: the Four Sixes Ranch project
6666 is the working title of a proposed spinoff about the Four Sixes Ranch, commonly known as the 6666 Ranch, in West Texas. Paramount’s original announcement described the ranch as a historically important operation associated with elite horses, livestock and working cowboys.
The ranch and its cowboys appeared in Yellowstone, giving the proposed series a direct franchise connection. However, it has no verified premiere date in the current official Paramount+ listings. Trade and entertainment reports have described the project as delayed or in development limbo, but there is not enough authoritative evidence to call it definitively canceled.
Bottom line on 6666: Include it on a list of announced projects, but do not present it as available, scheduled or canceled unless Paramount or another authoritative rights holder confirms a change. Paramount’s earlier franchise announcement is available here.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe correct chronological viewing order
If you want to follow the Dutton family’s fictional timeline rather than the order in which the shows were released, use this sequence:
- 1883: James and Margaret Dutton’s westward journey and the beginning of the family’s Montana legacy.
- 1923: Jacob and Cara Dutton defend the ranch in the early twentieth century.
- Yellowstone: John Dutton III and his family confront modern threats to the ranch.
- Marshals: Kayce Dutton’s post-Yellowstone law-enforcement story.
- Dutton Ranch: Beth and Rip’s post-Yellowstone move to South Texas.
This is also the order presented in Paramount+’s Dutton story viewing guide. Because Marshals and Dutton Ranch branch from different characters after Yellowstone, either one can come first after you finish the flagship without creating a major chronology problem.
The release order
For the way audiences originally encountered the franchise, watch the available shows in this order:
- Yellowstone — 2018
- 1883 — 2021
- 1923 — 2022
- Marshals — 2026
- Dutton Ranch — 2026
Release order gives you the original context for the prequels and lets you discover the family history after meeting the modern Duttons. Chronological order is better if your priority is a continuous generational narrative. The planned projects 1944 and 6666 should be added only after their release dates and final titles are confirmed.

Where to watch the Dutton shows in the United States
The newer Dutton-family series are primarily associated with Paramount+. In the U.S., viewers can stream 1883, 1923, Marshals and Dutton Ranch on Paramount+. Marshals also airs on CBS, while Dutton Ranch has Paramount Network broadcasts.
The original Yellowstone has a different distribution arrangement. Paramount Network was its original cable home, but Paramount+’s current U.S. guide directs viewers to Peacock for streaming the completed flagship series. Do not assume that a Paramount+ subscription alone includes every show in the saga.
These are U.S.-specific arrangements. International availability may place the shows on different services, and rights can change as licensing agreements expire or move. Check the service listings in your country before subscribing specifically for one season or series.

Why The Madison is not on the Yellowstone list
The Madison is easy to mistake for a Yellowstone spinoff because it was created by Taylor Sheridan, is set in Montana and was previously discussed alongside proposed Yellowstone sequel ideas. Paramount+ explicitly describes it as an original drama and says that it is not a Yellowstone spinoff.
The six-episode 2026 Paramount+ drama follows the Clyburn family, who move from New York to Montana’s Madison River Valley after a family tragedy. Its cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Beau Garrett and Patrick J. Adams. The setting and creator make it related in the broader Taylor Sheridan conversation, but it should not be inserted into the Dutton family chronology or counted among the Yellowstone prequels, sequels and canonical spinoffs. Paramount+’s clarification is available in its official The Madison guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Madison a Yellowstone spinoff?
No. Paramount+ describes The Madison as an original drama, not a Yellowstone spinoff. It shares creator Taylor Sheridan and a Montana setting with the franchise, but it follows the Clyburn family rather than the Dutton family.
What is the best order to watch the Yellowstone shows?
For the fictional chronology, watch 1883, 1923, Yellowstone, Marshals and Dutton Ranch. For release order, watch Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Marshals and Dutton Ranch.
Is 6666 canceled?
There is no sufficiently authoritative confirmation that 6666 has been canceled. It remains best described as an announced or in-development Four Sixes Ranch project without a verified premiere date.
Is Yellowstone on Paramount+ in the United States?
Not according to Paramount+’s current U.S. family viewing guide. The original series aired on Paramount Network, while the guide identifies Peacock as the U.S. streaming home for the completed Yellowstone series. The newer shows—1883, 1923, Marshals and Dutton Ranch—are associated with Paramount+.
The Bottom Line
The released Yellowstone saga currently consists of five shows: the historical pair 1883 and 1923, the modern flagship Yellowstone, and the two post-series branches Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Add 1944 and 6666 to a watchlist of announced projects, not to the available viewing order, and keep The Madison separate.
