Damian Wayne remains a Robin while developing as an independent hero. Carrie Kelley is another prominent Robin, but she belongs to the alternate continuity of The Dark Knight Returns.
Why there is more than one Robin
Robin first appeared in Detective Comics #38 (1940), according to DC’s official Robin character profile. The identity began with Dick Grayson and became a role taken up by other characters alongside Batman. DC describes it as “a mantle passed to the most worthy.” The roster below covers the five central-continuity Robins featured together in DC’s 2021 editorial coverage and Robins #1, plus Carrie Kelley, a major Robin from a separate continuity. It is a guide to prominent versions, not a census of every Robin in every DC story.
The central-continuity Robins
Dick Grayson became Nightwing
Dick was the original Robin. As he grew into his own hero, he left the role and adopted the identity Nightwing. DC’s account of his history also traces later solo and espionage work. His path established the pattern most associated with the mantle: Robin can be a formative identity rather than a permanent one. DC summarizes his transition in its Robin profile and 2021 overview of the Robins.
Jason Todd became Red Hood
Jason took over as Robin after Dick left. In the story DC recounts, the Joker killed him; Jason later returned and assumed the Red Hood identity. Red Hood is best understood as a vigilante or antihero role, not a simple transformation into a villain: Jason’s methods and choices differ from Batman’s, and his stories vary. DC recounts this history in its Robins feature and Damian Wayne coming-of-age feature.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Tim Drake became Red Robin, then used Robin again
Tim deduced the secret identities of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson and argued that Batman needed a Robin after Jason’s death. He later took the name Red Robin, but that was not a one-way change: DC’s 2021 account says Tim had begun using Robin again in 2019. His history is a clear example of why “who they became after” describes a changing path, not necessarily a final identity. See DC’s 2021 feature and Robin retrospective.
Stephanie Brown became Spoiler and Batgirl
Stephanie was already known as Spoiler before her brief time as Robin, and she also operated as Batgirl. DC’s 2021 article says her Robin stint lasted three months, as reported in that article. Her sequence does not fit a simple “Robin, then one new identity” pattern: Spoiler is both the identity she used before Robin and one associated with her afterward. DC discusses her history in its Robins overview and Stephanie Brown retrospective.

Damian Wayne remains Robin while growing beyond the role
Damian is Bruce Wayne’s son, raised and trained by assassins before becoming Robin. Unlike Dick, Jason, and Tim, his central story is not defined by a settled successor name. DC’s 2022 coming-of-age feature describes Jason going his own way as Red Hood, Tim patrolling on his own, and Damian’s story continuing to develop. The available DC coverage supports an ongoing Robin role and developing independence, rather than a definitive replacement identity: DC’s 2022 feature.
Carrie Kelley: Robin in the Miller continuity
Carrie Kelley is the Robin of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, which is a separate continuity from the central DC Universe sequence above. In Miller’s follow-up, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, she becomes Catgirl, according to DC’s overview of the Robins. Her story belongs on a broader list of notable Robins, but should not be folded into the main-continuity succession.
