Why ENE, EPEES, and EWES fit
ENE: “Direction opposite of WSW.”
WSW means west-southwest; the opposite compass direction is ENE, or east-northeast.
EPEES: “Fencing swords.”
An epee is a fencing sword, so the plural clue takes the plural answer EPEES.

EWES: “Farm animals that sound like vowels not seen in this puzzle?”
“Ewes” is pronounced like “you,” turning the animal answer into a sound-based wordplay clue. How2Shout notes the clue’s play on vowel sounds.
