YouTube playlist voting lets signed-in guests upvote or downvote tracks in a collaborative playlist, influencing which items appear higher and may play sooner. It can make a casual party playlist more democratic, but it is not a guaranteed “play this next” queue—and the host should choose who is allowed to vote before sharing the link.
What YouTube playlist voting does
Playlist voting is part of YouTube’s collaborative-playlist tools, available on YouTube and YouTube Music. People can vote on videos or songs already in the shared playlist, and the votes influence their ranking. A higher-ranked track can move up the playlist and be heard sooner when playback follows that order. YouTube announced the feature in 2024; rollout coverage followed in 2025. YouTube’s announcement and its collaboration guidance describe the feature.
It helps to separate three different actions:
- Adding songs: Collaboration permissions let invited people contribute to the playlist.
- Voting: Playlist-specific upvotes and downvotes affect the order of items.
- Liking or disliking a video: These are ordinary YouTube engagement controls; they are not the playlist’s voting system.
Votes do not guarantee that the leading track becomes the immediate next song. Shuffle, a manually selected track, playback from another queue, or an unavailable item can all affect what plays. Treat voting as a way to rank the playlist, not as an unbreakable live DJ queue.
How to create a playlist guests can vote on
On YouTube, open a new or existing playlist and go to Share → Invite collaborators. Follow the prompt to make the playlist public or unlisted if needed, enable collaboration, and set the voting audience. Copy the invitation or playlist link and send it to guests. Wording and menu placement can differ slightly across web and mobile interfaces.

In YouTube Music, the documented route for changing voting is:
- Open the You tab and find the playlist.
- Open its More menu, then choose Edit.
- Under Voting, choose Everyone, Collaborators only, or Off.
- Select Save.
For voting to work, the owner must be signed in and collaboration must be enabled. The playlist must be shareable; YouTube may ask you to set it to public or unlisted. YouTube says collaborative playlists have voting on by default, but owners can change that, and voting may be disabled on some playlists for safety reasons.

Who can vote—and what “unlisted” means
The owner chooses among three settings:
- Everyone: Any signed-in YouTube account can vote.
- Collaborators only: Only people the owner has added as collaborators can vote.
- Off: Voting is disabled.
YouTube says votes are anonymous and each user gets one vote per video or song. Anonymous voting does not mean access is restricted, however. An unlisted playlist is not shown like a public playlist in ordinary search and browsing, but anyone who gets its link may be able to open it. It is not the same as a private, fixed guest list. If you want a controlled party, choose Collaborators only and add the intended participants instead of relying on a link being kept secret.
Adding a collaborator also involves more than voting: collaborators can add content, and a collaborator can remove content they added; the owner can remove content too. Decide whether guests should be able to contribute tracks or only participate in ranking the existing selection. Turning collaboration off removes all collaborators, so do not use that as a casual way to pause additions unless you are prepared to manage access again.

How guests vote
Guests should open the shared playlist while signed in to a YouTube account, find an item, and use the playlist’s upvote or downvote control if it is available. Each person can vote once per item, and the vote is anonymous. The resulting order is the useful signal: a popular track may rise, but the interface should not be mistaken for a promise that it will interrupt the current song or play immediately.
A sensible party setup
- Build the playlist before guests arrive. Remove duplicate versions and choose the particular recording you want—official audio, a music video, a live cut, or a remix.
- Set visibility deliberately. Use unlisted if you do not want the playlist broadly discoverable, while remembering that its link can be forwarded.
- Enable collaboration and choose Collaborators only. Add the guests who should participate. Use Everyone only if broad voting is intentional.
- Test with another account or device. Confirm the invite works and that the guest can see the voting controls.
- Test the actual playback setup. Play it through the speaker, TV, or casting arrangement you plan to use. Check the selected uploads for long intros, unsuitable edits, poor audio, or availability problems.
- Set expectations about requests. Tell guests whether they may add songs, not just vote. If additions are allowed, consider agreeing on a cutoff or having the host review the list.
- Keep a backup. A saved alternative playlist and a playback plan for unreliable internet can prevent a missing feature or unavailable upload from stopping the music.
When voting is missing or playback seems wrong
The voting option is missing
First check that you are signed in, the playlist is public or unlisted, collaboration is enabled, and Voting is not set to Off. Some playlists may not have voting because of safety restrictions, and controls can vary by account, platform, or rollout. Try opening the playlist in YouTube Music or YouTube’s web or mobile interface and refresh or restart the app. If it remains unavailable, it may be an account or feature-availability limitation; repeatedly recreating the playlist is unlikely to help.

Guests can see the playlist but cannot vote
Confirm they are signed in and check the audience setting. With Collaborators only, merely receiving a playlist URL is not enough: the guest must have been added as a collaborator. Also confirm the owner has not turned voting off.

Switch to Collaborators only, stop circulating the link, and review collaboration access. If voting is set to Everyone, assume that a forwarded link can bring in participants beyond the original group.

The wrong version wins, or songs do not play in order
Remove duplicate versions before the event so votes do not split among a studio recording, live version, lyric video, or fan upload. If playback ignores the visible ranking, check whether shuffle is on, whether playback is coming from a different queue, or whether someone selected a track manually. An item may also be unavailable in your location or no longer playable. Ranking helps organize a playlist; it does not override every playback choice or availability limit.

For a house party, road trip, family gathering, or casual hangout where a ranked playlist is good enough, YouTube voting is a convenient option—especially if guests want music videos, live versions, remixes, or other uploads alongside standard tracks. Its breadth can also mean more duplicate or inconsistent versions to clean up.
For a wedding, formal event, bar, or other occasion that needs a precise running order, request approval, tighter moderation, or a true live queue, playlist voting may be too loose. A dedicated party-request service may suit that job better, but check its current availability and controls before relying on it. Spotify and Apple Music are music-focused alternatives, though they do not replicate YouTube’s full range of video uploads; confirm that any service supports the particular collaborative or voting behavior your group needs.
