Emperor Geta and the Ten-Month War for Rome: How Caracalla Removed His Brother

Emperor Geta was not simply a royal son waiting in his brother’s shadow. Publius Septimius Geta (189–211) held the title Caesar from 198 to 209 and Augustus from 209 until his death. When their father, Septimius Severus, died in 211, Geta and Caracalla became joint rulers of the Roman Empire. Their partnership lasted about ten months. The British Museum records that rival factions and mutual obstruction made the arrangement unworkable, and that Caracalla murdered Geta before attempting to erase his memory.

“Betrayed by his brother” captures the political drama, but the surviving evidence does not establish a detailed scene of deception. What can be stated securely is more striking in a different way: Geta was an emperor in his own right, Caracalla eliminated him in 211, the Senate reportedly distrusted Caracalla’s self-defence explanation, and surviving objects—including a provincial coin with Geta’s bust deliberately erased—show how the new sole ruler tried to make his brother disappear from public memory.

Who was Emperor Geta?

Publius Septimius Geta was the younger son of Septimius Severus and the brother of Caracalla. He was born in 189 and died in 211, so his entire adult life unfolded inside the Severan imperial household. His career followed the formal stages expected of a Roman imperial heir, but the titles he held matter because they show that he was eventually elevated beyond the status of a junior prince.

Period Geta’s title What the title establishes
189 Birth The British Museum biography gives 189 as Geta’s birth year.
198–209 Caesar Geta was recognized as a designated imperial successor and junior member of the ruling house.
209–211 Augustus Geta held the senior imperial title, making him an emperor rather than merely a prince.
211 Joint ruler with Caracalla After Septimius Severus died, both brothers ruled the empire until Caracalla killed Geta.

In Roman political language, Caesar and Augustus were not interchangeable labels. Caesar identified a junior imperial rank associated with succession, while Augustus marked the full imperial dignity. The British Museum’s dating therefore places Geta’s elevation to Augustus in 209, two years before the final crisis. Any account that calls him only Caracalla’s younger brother misses this constitutional fact: for the last part of his life, Geta was an Augustus.

The succession that created two emperors

Septimius Severus’s death in 211 transformed a managed family rivalry into a struggle over the state. The two sons inherited power together, rather than one being excluded. Their joint reign lasted roughly ten months, according to the British Museum, but shared titles did not produce shared authority.

Why joint rule was unstable

The museum describes rival factions around the brothers and obstruction between them. Those details point to a government divided at its center: decisions could be delayed, supporters could organize around one prince against the other, and every public act carried the question of which brother was gaining ground. The evidence does not justify inventing a constitutional plan to divide the empire or a specific showdown in the Senate. It does show that the arrangement functioned as competition rather than cooperation.

Geta and Caracalla also represented competing personal networks. In a dynastic monarchy, the emperor’s household was the political system’s visible core. Officials, soldiers, and aristocrats had practical reasons to identify with one brother, because the survival of their positions could depend on which claimant prevailed. The British Museum’s reference to factions and obstruction is consequently more important than a romanticized story of sibling hatred: it describes a government in which routine administration itself became part of the contest.

What “the battle for Rome” means here

The title’s “battle for Rome” should not be read as evidence of a documented battlefield between Geta and Caracalla. The surviving evidence supports a battle for control of the imperial center: two Augusti occupied the same political space, each backed by a faction, until one brother removed the other. The struggle was fought through access, authority, loyalty, and the control of public memory rather than through a recorded campaign with armies facing one another in the field.

Was Geta betrayed by Caracalla?

“Betrayal” is a useful description of the outcome, but it is an interpretation rather than a fully documented sequence of events. The available evidence establishes that Caracalla murdered Geta in 211. It does not, in the available evidence, verify the exact date, location, manner of the attack, who was present, or whether a particular invitation or promise was used to lure Geta into danger.

What the sources do establish

  • Geta and Caracalla were joint rulers after their father’s death.
  • The partnership lasted about ten months.
  • The brothers’ factions obstructed one another.
  • Caracalla murdered Geta in 211.
  • Caracalla offered a self-defence explanation that the Senate reportedly viewed skeptically.

Those points are enough to explain why later readers describe Geta as betrayed without supplying a cinematic death scene. A responsible narrative distinguishes the verified political result from details that would require a close reading of ancient accounts such as Cassius Dio or Herodian. No named ancient quotation or eyewitness dialogue has been established in the available evidence, so none is presented as fact.

The self-defence claim and the Senate

The British Museum’s Caracalla biography records that Caracalla’s reported explanation was self-defence and that the Senate regarded it with suspicion. That reaction matters because it shows that the official justification did not automatically settle the question for Rome’s political elite. The Senate’s skepticism is not proof of every later allegation, but it is evidence that contemporaries—or at least the tradition preserved about them—did not simply accept the killing as an unavoidable act of protection.

It is also a reminder of how imperial narratives worked. Once one brother had become sole ruler, the state needed a public account of why a fellow Augustus had died. “Self-defence” supplied a legal and moral frame. The Senate’s doubtful response indicates the gap between that frame and the political reality of a rival removed during a disputed succession.

How Geta’s memory was erased

After the murder, Caracalla attempted to eradicate Geta’s memory. This policy is commonly discussed under the Latin term damnatio memoriae, a modern shorthand for official measures that condemned a person’s public remembrance. The practical actions could include removing a name, altering an image, or suppressing honors. In Geta’s case, the evidence includes an object that preserves both the original commemoration and the attempt to destroy it.

The erased coin

A British Museum record describes a provincial coin dated 211 on which Geta’s bust has been erased. The coin is valuable evidence because it is not merely a later story about censorship; it is a surviving physical trace of alteration. Someone changed an issued image so that the emperor who had appeared on it would no longer be visibly present.

Evidence What it shows What it does not show
Geta’s title Augustus, 209–211 He held full imperial rank before his death. It does not identify the exact circumstances of his killing.
Joint reign of about ten months The brothers shared imperial power after Severus died. It does not provide a day-by-day account of their disputes.
Provincial coin dated 211 with Geta’s bust erased His image was deliberately removed from at least one surviving coin. It does not measure how uniformly every province carried out the policy.
British Museum account of Senate skepticism Caracalla’s self-defence explanation was not universally accepted. It does not preserve a verbatim Senate transcript.

Erasure could never be perfectly complete. Coins circulated far beyond the place where they were struck, and objects already in private or institutional hands could survive later orders. The altered coin therefore has a double significance: it records the reach of Caracalla’s authority and the limits of that authority. The attempt to remove Geta created evidence that Geta had been there.

A concise timeline of Geta’s rise and fall

  1. 189: Publius Septimius Geta is born, according to the British Museum biography.
  2. 198: Geta enters the period identified by the museum as his tenure as Caesar.
  3. 198–209: He holds the title Caesar while his family’s imperial system presents him as a junior dynastic figure.
  4. 209: Geta becomes Augustus, the senior imperial title.
  5. 211: Septimius Severus dies. Geta and Caracalla become joint rulers.
  6. About ten months later in 211: Rival factions and obstruction culminate in Caracalla’s murder of Geta.
  7. 211: A provincial coin later catalogued by the British Museum bears evidence of Geta’s bust being erased, linking the object to the effort to suppress his memory.

The timeline is short because Geta’s reign as Augustus was short. Its brevity should not be confused with insignificance. Roman emperors could exercise enormous authority in a few months, and an emperor’s death could redirect appointments, policies, honors, and the survival of an entire faction.

What can—and cannot—be reconstructed

Historical writing about Geta often gravitates toward the final confrontation because the outcome is so stark: two brothers inherit together, one survives, and the survivor tries to erase the dead man. The temptation is to fill the silence with precise dialogue, a dramatic setting, or a fully formed conspiracy. The available evidence does not support those additions.

Firm ground

  • Geta’s identity, family relationship, dates, and imperial titles are recorded by the British Museum.
  • The brothers ruled jointly after Severus’s death for approximately ten months.
  • The museum describes rival factions and obstruction during that joint rule.
  • Caracalla murdered Geta in 211.
  • Caracalla’s self-defence explanation was treated skeptically by the Senate, according to the museum’s account.
  • A 211 provincial coin preserves an erased image of Geta and is connected with the attempt to condemn his memory.

Details that require additional ancient-text study

  • The precise day and location of the killing.
  • The sequence of movements or messages that brought the brothers together.
  • The identity and number of witnesses.
  • Exact words spoken by Geta, Caracalla, senators, or attendants.
  • The extent to which every province, monument, inscription, and coin was altered.

This distinction does not weaken the story. It makes the central conclusion more reliable: Geta’s death was the decisive act that ended a failed dual monarchy, and the subsequent erasure campaign confirms that Caracalla understood his brother’s memory as a continuing political threat.

Why Emperor Geta still matters

Geta matters first because he complicates the familiar image of Roman succession. He was not an unnamed heir who briefly appeared before a more important emperor. He was Augustus from 209 to 211 and therefore part of the empire’s formal ruling authority. His murder was not a private family tragedy detached from government; it was a change of regime carried out inside the ruling house.

He also demonstrates how power operates through memory as well as force. Killing a rival can remove a person, but it cannot automatically remove titles already issued, coins already struck, or memories already formed. The erased provincial coin makes that problem visible. Its damaged surface is evidence of both condemnation and survival.

Finally, Geta’s story shows why caution matters in ancient history. The broad sequence is secure enough to state plainly: a younger son became Augustus, shared power with his brother after their father’s death, was murdered by that brother in 211, and was subjected to an attempt at official forgetting. The dramatic details remain more uncertain. Keeping that boundary intact gives readers a clearer account of what happened—and of how historians know it.

The Bottom Line

Geta was a legitimate Augustus who shared Rome’s throne with Caracalla for about ten months in 211. Caracalla then murdered him, faced skepticism over his self-defence claim, and ordered a campaign to erase Geta’s memory. A provincial coin with Geta’s bust deliberately removed shows that the erasure was real—but never complete.
