A murder witnessed across an experimental video installation brings Elsbeth into an unlikely partnership with a Scottish musician—and sets up a case involving two apparent overdoses and a cosmetics-company cover-up.
How the Iris turns Angus into an eyewitness
The episode opens with the Iris, a 24-hour video art installation linking Manhattan to a small seaside town in Scotland. Angus, a local musician who spends time by the screen, watches a woman become ill and die on the New York side. He cannot get the people there to notice his warning, but later reaches Elsbeth by phone. The unusual connection makes him a witness at a distance and draws him into her investigation.
CBS’s official episode description confirms that Angus sees a murder through the installation and joins forces with Elsbeth across the Atlantic. The detailed mystery and its resolution below are reported in Sophie Cleater’s Forbes Canada recap, published February 14, 2025.
What happened to Hayley Ritter?
The victim is Hayley Ritter, an employee in research and development at Elle Même Cosmetics. Her death initially appears to be a fentanyl overdose. Security chief Thorwald says Hayley had been fired after a randomized workplace drug test showed opioids; her partner, Charles, maintains that she was sober. Hayley had also been seen arguing with a man and carrying a heart-shaped box of chocolates.

Then journalist George is found dead in what also appears to be a fentanyl overdose. His editor says George had been preparing an exposé. Elsbeth begins to suspect the chocolates may have been part of an evidence handoff, rather than an incidental detail.
The cosmetics investigation and the killer
The story George and Hayley were connected to concerns health problems allegedly caused by Elle Même’s concealer. Hayley’s workplace drug-test result conflicts with a test taken at a fertility clinic the following morning, prompting Elsbeth to suspect the company result was faked.
People watching the Iris describe a masked man wearing a tartan scarf who took the chocolate box. Elsbeth later finds a matching scarf and mask in Thorwald’s office. The Forbes Canada recap identifies Thorwald as the killer: he says the company’s CEOs paid him to kill people who threatened to expose it. The episode’s central twist is that apparent drug deaths conceal an effort to silence people tied to the company story.
Elsbeth and Angus’s romantic thread
Between investigative calls, Elsbeth and Angus talk about his music and New York. He eventually travels to the city, plays for her, and the two kiss. Angus reveals that music is not his only work: he is also a firefighter.
