Elon Musk’s scheduled conversation with Donald Trump on August 12, 2024, did not begin at 8 p.m. Eastern as planned. Users trying to enter the X Spaces livestream saw “This Space is not available,” encountered freezes or could not connect, and waited roughly 40 to 45 minutes before the broadcast recovered. The evidence supports a severe failure of that Space and its access path—not a confirmed shutdown of every X service.
What failed on X?
The affected product was X Spaces, the platform’s live-audio feature. People attempting to join the Trump-Musk event were met with an unavailable message or an unusable loading page. Some users described freezing, while others could not reliably enter the room.
“X crashed” is therefore shorthand. Contemporary accounts primarily documented a failure or severe degradation of this particular Space and its entry point. They did not establish that every part of X was offline; The Guardian reported that other areas of the service appeared to remain functional.
The event had been scheduled for approximately 8 p.m. Eastern Time on August 12. Musk acknowledged the delay while the problem was being addressed. The speakers eventually connected about 40 to 45 minutes late, depending on whether the initial access failure, hold music and subsequent silence are counted.

What users heard after the Space returned
Access did not immediately mean a normal broadcast. Hold music played, followed by another period of silence. When the conversation appeared to start, Trump and Musk were initially muted or inaudible for some listeners. The audio connection ultimately stabilized and continued for more than two hours.
The Federal Election Commission later referred to the August 12 livestream as lasting more than two hours in an official memorandum: FEC memorandum.
What did Musk say caused the failure?
Musk said X appeared to be facing a “massive DDoS attack.” A distributed denial-of-service attack attempts to overwhelm a service with a flood of traffic or requests, preventing legitimate users from connecting.

That explanation remained an allegation, not an independently demonstrated finding. The contemporaneous reporting cited here did not publish forensic evidence, attack data or a definitive X postmortem establishing that a DDoS attack occurred, how large it was, or whether it was the sole cause. The verified fact is that users could not reliably access the Space; the cause was unresolved in the public record.

Yes. Once the Space recovered, Trump and Musk held the conversation, which ran for more than two hours. X displayed more than 1 million concurrent listeners during the event, according to contemporaneous reports.

That number describes the live counter at a point in the broadcast. It is not a count of unique people, total views of a recording, social-media impressions, people who heard the entire discussion, or people who tried and failed to join. Claims of a billion-person audience should not be treated as a verified reach figure.

The event was widely called an interview, but it functioned more like a long, friendly political conversation than a conventional journalist-led question-and-answer session. Axios described a rally-like exchange in which Trump often spoke at length while Musk prompted or responded.

Listeners and commentators, including the Harris campaign, said Trump’s voice sounded different from his usual delivery in parts of the broadcast. Trump attributed the sound to a technical problem. Those are competing claims about an audio impression, not a medical finding; the available reporting does not establish a diagnosis or independently determine the cause.

Why the delay mattered beyond one broken livestream
A test of X’s political ambitions
Musk had promoted the event as a major demonstration of X’s ability to host high-profile political communication. Trump was also returning to active use of the platform after a long absence, giving the broadcast significance beyond an ordinary audio room.
A repeat of an earlier X failure
The incident recalled the widely criticized technical problems during Ron DeSantis’s 2023 campaign-launch event hosted with Musk. The risk of one-channel distribution
A major live political event depends on several systems working at once: audience admission, account authentication, Space discovery, audio routing, speaker controls, traffic delivery and abuse-prevention measures. A failure at any one point can block listeners even when other parts of a platform remain available. Without a public backup channel, organizers also have few immediate ways to reach people locked out of the primary broadcast.
