Apple TV+ became Apple TV in October 2025. Apple changed the service’s name, logo and visual identity, but not the basic service that subscribers use. Existing customers do not need a new account, device, subscription transfer or app migration.
The rename does create a naming problem: “Apple TV” can now mean the streaming service, the Apple TV app or the Apple TV 4K hardware. Knowing which one Apple means is the key to understanding what changed.

Apple described the rebrand in October 2025 around the release of F1: The Movie. Its subsequent materials use “Apple TV” for the service, including references to sports programming and the Apple TV–Peacock bundle. (PCWorld’s report; Apple’s service materials)
What current subscribers need to do
For an existing subscriber, the practical answer is simple: do nothing. Keep using the same Apple Account and the Apple TV app. The service remains available through supported Apple devices, smart televisions, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation, Xbox and the web. Apple says its service is offered through the app in more than 100 countries and regions and on more than 1 billion screens, although availability and the timing of branding updates can differ by market, platform and app version. Apple’s press material lists a U.S. price signal of $12.99 per month and a seven-day trial for new subscribers. That figure is country-specific and volatile; check the live signup flow for current taxes, promotions and billing-channel differences. Apple TV, the Apple TV app and Apple TV 4K are different things
Apple TV: the streaming service
This is the service formerly called Apple TV+. It is the subscription associated with Apple’s original series and films, along with programming Apple distributes under the current brand.
Apple TV app: the software
The app is a storefront and viewing hub. It can show Apple’s subscription catalog alongside rentals, purchases, sports, Apple TV channels, bundles and subscriptions to other providers. Seeing a title in the app does not automatically mean it is included in an Apple TV subscription.

Apple TV 4K: the physical player
Apple TV 4K is a separate living-room device running tvOS. Apple’s current product page continues to identify it as hardware, distinct from the service. (Apple TV 4K)

Why did Apple remove the “+”?
Apple has not published a detailed explanation of the naming decision in the available announcements. Several interpretations are reasonable, but they should not be mistaken for confirmed internal strategy.

- Ecosystem alignment: A single broad entertainment name may fit Apple’s app and device experience more naturally.

Yes. A search for “Apple TV” might return the service, the app, the hardware or a support page. “Watch Apple TV” generally means using the service through the app; it does not mean buying an Apple TV 4K.

PCWorld reported that Apple senior vice president Eddie Cue indicated the suffix was sufficient to distinguish the hardware. It does not eliminate confusion in retail listings, billing screens or casual conversation.

When a billing or app screen says “Apple TV,” inspect the subscription description and billing provider. The app may also be showing a rental, purchase, channel, bundle or third-party service.

No. The service works through the Apple TV app on many smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, mobile devices and the web. A dedicated box is optional.
Apple TV 4K may make sense if you:
- Already use Apple devices and want tight ecosystem integration.
- Prefer a responsive tvOS interface and a dedicated living-room player.
- Want Apple-focused smart-home features and integrations.
Existing hardware is probably enough if you:
- Own a capable smart TV, Roku, Fire TV or game console.
- Only want access to Apple’s subscription catalog.
- Do not need Apple-specific hardware or smart-home features.
Apple also announced a Liquid Glass redesign and other tvOS 26 changes in June 2025, but those software updates do not turn the service rename into a hardware rebrand. (Apple)

What else changed around the service?
The shorter name arrived as Apple broadened its entertainment strategy. Apple introduced an Apple TV and Peacock bundle in the United States on October 20, 2025, priced at $14.99 per month for Apple TV plus Peacock Premium or $19.99 per month for Apple TV plus Peacock Premium Plus. These are U.S. figures and may not apply elsewhere. (Apple’s bundle announcement)
Apple has also highlighted expanded sports programming, including Major League Soccer and Formula 1 coverage, and introduced a native Apple TV app for Android. Rights, event access, regional availability and whether a particular item is included or separately packaged vary by country and title. Apple’s January 2026 services review described the new identity alongside those developments and new profiles. (Apple)
The broader strategy helps explain why the “plus” may have become less central: Apple is positioning one entertainment service across series, films, sports, live events and distribution partnerships. That is an interpretation of the surrounding moves, not a stated Apple rationale.
What the rename means outside the United States
Apple’s name is global, but subscription prices, trials, sports rights, bundles, taxes and supported platforms are not uniform. The $12.99 service figure and the $14.99/$19.99 Peacock figures above are U.S. references. Check Apple’s local storefront before subscribing, and do not assume that a title promoted in one country is available in another.
