The Secret of Antarctica

Feb 26, 2023 | Nature, Videos

Antarctica is the southernmost continent and site of the South Pole. The continent is a virtually uninhabited and ice-covered landmass. Most cruises to the continent visit the Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches toward South America.

Almost three miles of ice buries most of Antarctica, cloaking the continent. Just for info, Antarctica is as large as the United States.

In 2002, an ice shelf the size of Manhattan collapsed in less than a month. And it shocked scientists. They started exploring more and more about Antarctica, and conducted new and advanced researches.

According to scientists, 10% loss of ice would cause catastrophic flooding of coastal cities unlike anything seen before in human history.

Now, scientists are trying to figure whether the past of Antarctica and the climate can offer insight and clues about what lies in the future.
