Music v2’s central change is a more iterative way to build and revise tracks, including composing section by section, using audio references, and shaping vocal delivery. The official clips are useful examples of what ElevenLabs wants the system to do—not independent evidence of typical results.
What launched—and what the names mean
ElevenLabs’ original Eleven Music announcement on August 5, 2025, introduced a natural-language generator for songs with vocals or instruments, lyrics, configurable genre and structure, and post-generation editing. The announcement included examples such as “Echoes of Midnight” and “Saddles and Shadows.”
Since then, the name has come to describe several related products rather than one feature:
- Eleven Music is the music-generation model: it creates tracks from text prompts.
- ElevenMusic is the creator-facing platform for discovering, listening to, making, remixing, and publishing music. ElevenLabs announced it on April 29, 2026, alongside Eleven Album Vol. 2. Its marketplace also lets users license generated songs by usage type, with creators receiving a portion of payments; see the Eleven Music Marketplace help page.
- ElevenCreative is the business-oriented workflow for music used in advertising, branded content, video, and other commercial production. ElevenLabs presents it as a way to make bespoke music without conventional sync-fee and clearance workflows, subject to the applicable plan and terms.
- Eleven Music API is the developer interface for integrating generation into products and workflows.
The April 29 platform announcement and the later model update are distinct milestones. ElevenLabs announced ElevenMusic first, then announced Music v2 on May 26, 2026; the v2 announcement was updated July 28, 2026.

What Music v2 changes
The practical shift is from asking for a track and taking the first result to shaping a longer composition in pieces. ElevenLabs describes a workflow in which a creator can start with one section, extend the track, and revise material rather than treating a single generation as a finished song.
- Section-by-section composition: Build an intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and other parts iteratively. The model is intended to retain a track’s musical identity as it grows, though continuity still needs listening and judgment.
- Audio Reference: Upload a short recording to guide a generation’s style and sound. This is a reference for direction, not permission to reproduce or use the source recording.
- More expressive vocals: The v2 update describes improved vocal delivery, including support for fast rap. Pronunciation and intelligibility can still vary, especially with unusual names or multilingual lyrics.
- Genre transitions: A track can shift styles during its progression. A feature’s availability does not guarantee that every transition will feel musically natural.
- Inpainting: Revise a portion of a track instead of regenerating everything. Local edits can still affect the surrounding musical fit.
- Sound effects: Sound-design elements can be embedded in a track.
- Prompt adherence and languages: The system is designed to follow genre, mood, arrangement, and instrumentation directions more reliably. Documentation lists English, Spanish, German, Japanese, and other languages, but does not establish equal quality across them.
These capabilities are described in ElevenLabs’ Music capabilities documentation. They make the product more interesting for iterative production, but do not amount to MIDI-level control or a conventional multitrack studio.
What to listen for in the clips
Start with the original launch samples and the examples on the ElevenMusic launch page. These are company-provided demonstrations of intended use cases, not independent tests or a measure of average output quality. ElevenLabs uses terms such as “studio-grade” in its positioning; that is the company’s description, not an independent assessment.
As you listen, focus on the parts that determine whether a generated track is usable rather than merely impressive at first:

- Vocal phrasing: Do syllables land naturally on the beat? Are breaths and phrase endings plausible? Do fast passages stay intelligible, and do unusual names or non-English words sound right?
- Lyrics: Listen for repeated lines, awkward rhymes, or words that do not fit the melody. Generated lyrics may need rewriting, particularly for precise narratives or technical terms.
- Arrangement continuity: Does the chorus feel like it belongs to the same song? Do instruments enter and leave coherently? Does the track build toward a climax, or does it peak too early?
- Prompt adherence: Check whether the result follows the requested genre, tempo, instrumentation, mood, vocal direction, and structure. Descriptors guide generation; they are not guaranteed controls.
- Musical specificity: Listen for a memorable motif and purposeful variation between sections, rather than a generic bed that repeats without developing.
- Artifacts: Watch for repetitive melodies, unnatural lyric repetition, timing that drifts, blurred bass or guitar parts, abrupt genre changes, and vocal pronunciation errors.
A strong opening does not tell you whether the later sections hold together. With Music v2, the useful question is not only “Does this sound convincing?” but also “Can I guide it into a coherent track, then fix the parts that do not work?”
How to make and extend a track
ElevenLabs’ Music product documentation says tracks can run from 3 seconds to 5 minutes. A five-minute generation limit is not a promise that each prompt will produce a finished, well-structured single. The recommended approach is to begin with a shorter draft—such as 30 seconds—and use the “+ Add Section” control to extend it.
- Open Eleven Music through the ElevenLabs website. Website access, API access, plan limits, and commercial permissions are separate questions.
- Describe the intended track. Include genre, style, mood, instrumentation, tempo, vocal direction, language, structure, and intended use where relevant.
- Generate variants and listen critically. Check the lyrics, phrasing, arrangement, and whether the output follows the prompt before investing in a longer version.
- Edit and extend. Revise lyrics or sections where supported, then use “+ Add Section” to build out the composition. Music v2 also supports Audio Reference and inpainting.
- Export or share through the relevant ElevenLabs workflow. The help documentation mentions MP3 exports; it does not establish comprehensive stem or MIDI export support.
A more useful prompt than “make a rock song” specifies the musical brief. For example:
Up-tempo 1980s synth-pop, bright analog synthesizers, driving drum-machine groove, female lead vocal, bittersweet chorus, short intro, verse, pre-chorus, large melodic chorus, polished radio mix.

Be specific enough to give the model direction, but treat every descriptor as guidance rather than a guaranteed switch. If a result misses the mark, change a few elements at a time; generating more variants or repeatedly revising a weak passage can use credits quickly.
Pricing: shared credits on the website, per-minute pricing for the API
The current ElevenLabs pricing page advertises Music access on its free plan, but Music draws from credits shared with other ElevenLabs products. The page lists Music at approximately 900 credits per minute. Using the plan figures shown there, that works out to rough maximums before variants, edits, retries, or other products use credits:

The duration estimates are arithmetic based on the pricing page’s approximate per-minute credit rate, not guaranteed music-only allowances. The page’s displayed prices and promotions can change. ElevenLabs says cost also depends on track length and number of variants, and users can see the credit cost before generation; see its Music cost help page.
For developers, the current API pricing page lists music generation at $0.15 per minute, a five-minute duration limit, and commercial-use licensing on Starter and higher plans. Current documentation says API access is available to paid subscribers. That is newer than the May 26 Music v2 launch announcement, which described API access as “coming soon.”

Commercial use: plan and terms matter
ElevenLabs says its music model was trained on licensed data and promotes commercial workflows. That is not the same as a universal guarantee that any output, under any plan, can be monetized or that a user owns copyright in every jurisdiction. According to the company’s publishing and commercial-use guidance:
- The free plan does not include a commercial license.
- Paid plans include commercial licensing subject to the applicable agreement and terms.
- Content created outside a paid subscription cannot be used commercially.
- Beta-generated content cannot be used commercially or in production environments.
- Noncommercial sharing of free-plan content may require attribution, including a reference to “Eleven Music.”
Before releasing or monetizing a track, check the current Music Terms and confirm that the generation was made under an eligible plan and outside any beta restriction. Also ensure that you have rights to any lyrics, reference audio, or other material you supplied. The company’s training-data position does not clear user-provided material.

Audio Reference can steer a Music v2 generation using a short uploaded track. ElevenLabs says reference tracks are screened for copyright compliance, but screening is not a substitute for permission or the user’s legal responsibility. Do not upload commercial music unless you have the right to do so: lawful access to listen to a song does not automatically grant permission to upload it for AI transformation. A reference may guide style without granting rights to reproduce the original.
The Music API page says the Music Terms describe prohibited inputs, including artist names, song titles, and lyrics. Rather than requesting a named artist or song, describe musical attributes: “sparse 1960s folk-rock with fingerpicked acoustic guitar,” “dark industrial techno with distorted percussion,” or “warm neo-soul with Rhodes piano and layered harmonies.”

Who is Eleven Music for?
Eleven Music is most compelling when the goal is a fast custom cue or song that can be shaped through prompts and sections, especially for a creator already using other ElevenLabs audio tools. It may suit:
- Personal experimentation: The free plan offers a way to try the generator, subject to shared-credit limits and noncommercial restrictions.
- YouTube, podcasts, and social video: Custom background music or vocal experiments may be useful, provided the plan and terms allow the intended use.
- Ads and branded content: ElevenCreative is positioned for commercial production workflows; the applicable terms still determine what is permitted.
- Film, television, and games: A generated cue can be a starting point, but high-stakes productions may need a composer, precise editability, and clearly documented rights.
- Developers: The API offers a route to integrate generation, with current pricing and access conditions on the API pages.
- Music discovery and publishing: ElevenMusic and its marketplace add listening, publishing, remixing, and licensing features beyond generation.
It is a weaker fit if the project depends on traditional multitrack production, precise MIDI editing, downloadable stems, repeatable vocal identity, or a completely predictable melody and arrangement. The documented export reference is to MP3; comprehensive stems, WAV, or MIDI support is not established by the cited product documentation. For high-volume casual generation, the shared-credit structure may also be less attractive than a music-only service. Suno (official site) and Udio (official site) are alternatives to investigate for dedicated song-generation workflows, but a fair quality or price comparison requires current, controlled testing.
Is Music v2 worth trying?
Music v2’s strongest case is its section-based workflow: it aims to make a track something users can extend and revise, rather than a one-click clip they must accept or discard. That can be valuable for creators who need custom music quickly and are comfortable evaluating multiple drafts. The limits are equally practical: generated lyrics and vocals need scrutiny, long compositions can consume credits, and commercial permission depends on the plan, terms, beta status, and rights in supplied inputs.
If you are exploring, the free website plan is a low-commitment way to hear the system. If the output is intended for a monetized or production use, verify the applicable Music Terms first. Developers should check the current API availability and per-minute pricing rather than relying on the earlier launch announcement.
