Dying for Sex is worth watching if you want a drama that uses sexual frankness and unruly comedy to approach much heavier questions: how to live with a terminal diagnosis, what friendship asks of us, and how care changes a relationship. Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate make its central friendship funny, intimate, and painful. The series is inspired by a real story, but it is a scripted miniseries, not a documentary.
What is Dying for Sex about?
Molly Kochan receives news that her breast cancer is terminal and decides to pursue sexual pleasure. Her best friend Nikki Boyer becomes her companion as Molly explores desire and the two navigate illness, care, and the limits of their friendship. FX describes the series as inspired by Kochan’s story, first shared in a Wondery podcast made with Boyer; it is not a documentary reconstruction. NPR identifies that podcast as a 2020 production.
The premise is deliberately provocative, but sex is not a detachable gimmick. It is the route Molly takes into a story about agency and the urgency of wanting something for herself. The drama also keeps Nikki in view: being present for a friend means offering love and practical care while confronting the possibility of loss.
Does the series balance comedy with the heartbreak?
Not immediately, and that unevenness is part of the experience. The opening episodes lean hard into arch, outrageous humor. Richard Lawson’s Vanity Fair review finds that tone can feel overworked at first, even as the series grows richer. Other critics, including the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, NPR, and TIME, emphasize the way the raunch and comedy coexist with tenderness and mortality. Those are readings of the show, not a universal verdict.

As the story develops, its provocations have more emotional context. The jokes do not make illness disappear; they show the characters reaching for pleasure, laughter, and connection in its presence. That shift gives the series its strongest effect: the comedy can make the sorrow more immediate rather than soften it.
How are Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate?
Williams plays Molly with a restless, searching energy, while Slate gives Nikki warmth and a distinct point of view. Their performances make the friendship feel like a relationship with its own history and tensions, not simply a framework for Molly’s sexual adventures. Critics have especially praised how the leads carry both comic and dramatic material.

The show’s emotional center depends on their dynamic. Molly’s pursuit of desire is the story’s most conspicuous hook, but Nikki’s presence makes its questions about intimacy and responsibility harder to avoid. The series is interested in what it means to stay close when one person’s needs and circumstances are changing rapidly.
Is it a documentary or based on a true story?
Dying for Sex is a scripted adaptation inspired by Molly Kochan’s real story and the Wondery podcast she created with Nikki Boyer. That origin gives the series a real-life foundation, but viewers should not treat its scenes as documentary footage or assume that every dramatic detail is a literal record of events.

How many episodes are there, and where can you watch?
The miniseries has eight episodes, according to NPR’s 2025 review. FX’s official series page directs viewers to Hulu. Streaming rights and catalogs vary by country and can change; The Guardian identified Disney+ as an outlet in its market in April 2025, which should not be taken as confirmation of current availability elsewhere.
