Dune: Prophecy centers on three houses and one order: House Corrino holds the imperial throne, House Harkonnen leads the Sisterhood and seeks to restore its standing, and House Atreides is represented at court by swordmaster Keiran. The Sisterhood is an institution, not a house—and its leaders, sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen, connect the family conflicts to the series’ larger story. The series is set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides.
How the houses and the Sisterhood fit together
The central distinction is between family and institution. Corrino, Harkonnen, and Atreides are noble houses; the Sisterhood is an order with its own leadership and agenda. The Corrinos rule the Imperium, the Harkonnens hold prominent positions within the Sisterhood, and the Atreides enter the court story through Keiran’s service to the emperor. Their political roles—not a simple ranking of power—are the clearest way to keep the factions straight.
Warner Bros. Discovery describes the story as unfolding 10,000 years before Paul Atreides, with Valya and Tula confronting threats to humanity and establishing the Sisterhood that becomes the Bene Gesserit. Warner Bros. Discovery’s series announcement provides the official premise; its character descriptions identify the central figures and cast.
House Corrino: the imperial family
At the start of the series, Emperor Javicco Corrino rules the Imperium. His household is not politically united over Desmond Hart: the soldier’s actions create a rift in the family and draw him into conflict with the Sisterhood, while the imperial characters differ in how they view his value and the danger he poses.

House Harkonnen: Valya, Tula, and the Sisterhood
Valya and Tula Harkonnen are sisters and the central leaders of the Sisterhood. Their positions make House Harkonnen unusually close to an institution that is distinct from the noble houses themselves.
Valya Harkonnen
Mother Superior Valya is the central protagonist and leads the Sisterhood. Adult Valya is played by Emily Watson; younger Valya is played by Jessica Barden. Her ambition to restore the Harkonnen name is tied to an inherited account of disgrace involving their ancestor Abulurd and the ancient war against thinking machines. TIME reports that Valya considers Abulurd’s actions heroic and seeks vengeance against the Atreides.

Tula Harkonnen
Reverend Mother Tula is Valya’s sister and a senior figure in the order. Adult Tula is played by Olivia Williams; younger Tula is played by Emma Canning. The Harkonnens are central protagonists from the show’s perspective, but their pursuit of family standing is politically ruthless; “Harkonnen” is not simply a synonym for villain.
House Atreides: Keiran and the old feud
Keiran Atreides, played by Chris Mason, is a swordmaster in service to the emperor and his family. His role brings the Atreides into the Corrino court and places him amid the long-running conflict with the Harkonnens. TIME describes him as related to Paul Atreides, who lived many millennia later.

The feud is rooted in the ancient account of Abulurd Harkonnen’s treatment after the Battle of Corrin and Valya’s determination to restore her family’s reputation. Some further lineage details in secondary coverage are presented as presumed or inferred, so they should not be treated as confirmed on-screen family facts. In this era, Valya and Tula lead an early form of the order that becomes the Bene Gesserit in the later Dune timeline. The distinction matters: the Sisterhood’s influence crosses family lines, but it is not itself House Harkonnen, Corrino, or Atreides. The series draws on Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which TIME identifies as a source novel; it is optional further reading rather than a substitute for the television story.
