Phil Robertson’s family announced in December 2024 that he had Alzheimer’s disease. His son Jase described the illness as early stage at the time, but Robertson’s health later declined. He died at age 79 in May 2025; the family’s announcement, as reported by The Associated Press, did not state a cause of death.
What Phil Robertson’s family announced about his diagnosis
On the December 6, 2024 episode of Unashamed with the Robertson Family, sons Jase and Al said their father had Alzheimer’s disease. Jase described it as early stage and said it was beginning to affect Robertson’s daily life and conversations, according to The Independent’s December 7, 2024 report.
The health details were shared by the family. The reporting reviewed for this article does not include medical records or an independent clinical assessment.
What the family said about his other health problems
The family also described a long-running blood disease or disorder that had worsened. Jase said the family was consulting medical professionals and that doctors agreed there was no cure for what Robertson had. The family’s public comments did not give a precise name for the blood condition.

In April 2025, Jase said Robertson was not doing well and that the family was arranging professional care. Willie Robertson also described a blood disorder and a fractured vertebra, alongside signs of Alzheimer’s disease, in an account reported by CBN News on April 8, 2025. CBN reported that doctors compared the blood disorder to a form of cancer; that comparison is not a named diagnosis.
