Donald Trump Calls Himself a King as White House Shares Fake TIME Cover of Him

Donald Trump’s “LONG LIVE THE KING” post followed the administration’s move against New York City congestion pricing. The crowned image shared by the White House was a fake TIME-style cover—not a cover published by TIME—and echoed the magazine’s genuine 2018 “King Me” issue.

Donald Trump wrote “LONG LIVE THE KING” on February 19, 2025, after his administration moved against New York City’s congestion-pricing program. The official White House account amplified the message with a crowned image styled like a TIME cover—but it was not a real TIME cover. It was a fabricated parody modeled on the magazine’s genuine 2018 “King Me” issue.

What happened

On February 19, 2025, Donald Trump celebrated the Trump administration’s attempt to stop New York City’s congestion-pricing program by writing, “LONG LIVE THE KING.” The official White House account then shared an image of Trump wearing a crown beneath the same words.

The image looked like a TIME magazine cover, but it was not an authentic cover published by TIME. It was a fabricated TIME-style parody. Fact-checking coverage reported that two image-analysis services classified it as AI-generated or likely AI-generated, although those assessments do not establish exactly how or by whom the image was made. [c001][c002]

That distinction is central: the social-media post came from the authentic official White House account, while the magazine cover embedded in the post was not an authentic TIME artifact.

The post followed Trump’s move against congestion pricing

New York’s Congestion Relief Zone began charging applicable vehicles entering Manhattan’s central business district on January 5, 2025. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the program was intended to reduce traffic and generate money for public transportation. The initial passenger-vehicle charge was listed as $9 during the applicable period. [c007][c008]

On February 19, the Trump administration moved to halt or revoke the federal authorization connected to the program. Trump described the action as a victory for New York and Manhattan drivers, declared that congestion pricing was dead, and added the phrase “LONG LIVE THE KING.” [c001][c006]

New York officials rejected the idea that the federal government could simply cancel the state-created tolling program. They indicated that New York and its transportation authorities would challenge the action in court. The royal imagery therefore appeared alongside a real dispute over federal authority, rather than as an isolated joke detached from policy.

The fake cover copied a real 2018 TIME image

The White House image deliberately echoed TIME’s genuine June 18, 2018 “King Me” cover. The original, illustrated by Tim O’Brien, showed Trump looking toward a mirror in which his reflection wore a crown. Its accompanying language referred to “Visions of absolute power.” [c003][c004]

That 2018 cover appeared during political conflict over the White House’s attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller. In the original image, the crown functioned as a warning about power and presidential behavior. The 2025 White House parody reused the same visual language after Trump claimed credit for ending a controversial transportation policy.

  • Sturdiness: Solid engineered wood double frame with clear plexiglass, sturdy without being super heavy
  • Easy of Use: The small picture frame is easy to open and add pictures while also easy to put back together
  • Elegant Design: Attractive 4x6 double picture frame vertical stands on desktop or tabletop, great for displaying special moments
  • Simple Constructed: Functional meets aesthetical, which makes a terrific daily desk picture frames for office or home decor
  • Good for Present: The cute picture frame is pretty present for your family or best friend on Christmas, Mother's Day, birthday parties, graduation celebration etc.

The contrast between the two images is an interpretation of their documented contexts, not a proven statement of the White House’s creative intent. Visually, however, the change is clear: a magazine’s critical metaphor was repurposed as official celebratory branding.

Readers looking for the source image should consult TIME’s Trump cover history and the original “King Me” issue. The genuine 2018 issue is a historical reference or collectible; it is not the image posted by the White House in 2025.

Authentic post, inauthentic magazine cover

This episode demonstrates why provenance has to be checked at more than one level. There are two separate questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Did the official account publish the post? Yes. The image was shared by the official White House account.
  2. Did TIME publish the cover? No. The image was a fabricated cover designed to resemble TIME’s visual identity.

Confusing those questions can produce two opposite errors. A reader might incorrectly report that TIME created or published the crowned image. Alternatively, someone might dismiss the entire post as fake because the image was fabricated, even though the White House account really did share it.

The reported AI classifications should also be stated carefully. Image-detection tools can identify visual characteristics associated with synthetic imagery, but their results are not proof of a production workflow. The supportable description is “a fake TIME-style cover that image-analysis services assessed as AI-generated or likely AI-generated.” [c001]

Why the “king” language mattered politically

“Long live the king” was more than a caption attached to an unrelated image. It followed an executive action aimed at stopping a state and city transportation program that had already begun operating. The crown turned a claim of policy success into a royal tableau, making the message about personal power as well as congestion pricing.

That symbolism raised obvious concerns about concentrated executive power, but the image alone did not decide whether the administration’s action was lawful. The legal issue was whether federal officials had statutory and administrative authority to terminate a previously approved and operating tolling program, and whether they followed the required procedures. New York’s program was created under state law, while federal transportation approval and oversight were part of the dispute.

The Constitution provides an important institutional backdrop. Article I, Section 1 says that federal legislative powers are vested in Congress. The Constitution Annotated explains that the structure of separated powers limits the extent to which the executive and judicial branches may exercise legislative power. [c009][c010]

That principle does not mean that using royal language on a White House social-media account is itself unconstitutional. Nor does it automatically prove that the February 2025 transportation action violated the Constitution. A more precise conclusion is that the “king” framing highlighted a broader separation-of-powers concern while the courts addressed the narrower questions of statutory authority, agency action, and federal-state relations.

What happened to the congestion-pricing challenge?

The February 2025 announcement did not permanently end congestion pricing. According to the research available through August 13, 2026:

  • The tolling program began on January 5, 2025, with an initial $9 passenger-vehicle charge during the applicable period. [c007][c008]
  • A federal judge ruled on March 3, 2026, that the Trump administration’s effort to halt the program was unlawful. [c011]
  • The administration planned to appeal that ruling, according to later reporting. [c011]
  • A July 13, 2026 Second Circuit decision in related litigation described the Congestion Relief Zone as the Central Business District Tolling Program established under New York’s Traffic Mobility Act and addressed challenges involving the tolling program. [c012]

Because appellate and related litigation can continue, the dispute should not be described as finally resolved without checking the latest court docket. The most accurate summary at the dossier’s cutoff is that the program survived the administration’s termination effort at the district-court level, while appellate litigation remained relevant.

How to read the image without being misled

A reliable way to analyze a viral political image is to separate the post, the artifact, and the surrounding claim:

  1. Check the account. Establish whether the post came from an official account, a parody account, or an unaffiliated user.
  2. Check the alleged publication. Search the named magazine’s own archive or reporting. A cover that resembles TIME is not necessarily a TIME cover.
  3. Compare design details. Compare typography, issue dates, cover lines, logos, and the image with authenticated covers.
  4. Check the timing. Identify what policy announcement or political event the image accompanied.
  5. Describe uncertainty accurately. Say that tools classified an image as likely AI-generated rather than claiming those tools proved who created it.
  6. Follow the underlying event. In this case, the important policy question continued through litigation even after the viral image disappeared from the news cycle.

The lasting significance of the image

The crowned Trump image worked because it combined a recognizable visual reference with a current political claim. Anyone familiar with the 2018 “King Me” cover could immediately see the allusion, while other viewers could still understand the simpler message: Trump was presenting himself as the decisive authority behind a policy victory.

Its significance is therefore both media-related and institutional. As a media artifact, it shows how an official account can distribute an unofficial or fabricated image without that image becoming an authentic publication of the magazine it imitates. As political communication, it connected personal leadership and executive action in a dispute over who had the power to control New York’s tolling program.

The safest headline-level description remains precise: Donald Trump wrote “LONG LIVE THE KING” after the administration moved against New York City’s congestion pricing, and the White House shared a fake TIME-style cover showing him crowned. It did not show a real TIME cover, and the later legal fight over congestion pricing was not settled by the post.
