Dolly Parton is one of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Parton in East Tennessee. She is the fourth child, which means she has 11 siblings: six brothers and five sisters. The family grew up near the Great Smoky Mountains in Locust Ridge, where music, faith, hard work, and close family ties shaped Dolly’s life and later creative work.

Not all of Dolly’s siblings became entertainers. Some pursued music, acting, writing, or ministry, while others kept largely private lives. One brother, Larry, died just four days after birth, which explains why some informal accounts say Dolly grew up with 10 siblings even though the Parton family had 12 children in total.

Dolly Parton’s 11 siblings at a glance

Birth order Sibling Born What is publicly documented
1 Willadeene Parton March 1940 Singer, writer, and author of family-focused books
2 David Wilburn Parton March 1942 Private life; worked as a bridge-builder superintendent
3 Coy Denver “Denver” Parton August 1943 Crane operator, homestead farmer, and hunter
4 Dolly Rebecca Parton January 19, 1946 Country singer, songwriter, actor, author, and philanthropist
5 Robert Lee “Bobby” Parton Jr. February 1948 Maintained a largely private life
6 Stella Mae Parton May 1949 Singer, songwriter, actress, writer, and cookbook author
7 Cassie Nan Parton February 1951 Singer who has performed with Dolly and other family members
8 Randel Huston “Randy” Parton December 1953 Singer-songwriter who worked in family musical projects; died in 2021
9 Larry Gerald Parton July 1955 Died four days after birth
10 Estel Floyd Parton June 1957 Musician who sometimes worked with Dolly; died in 2018
11 Freida Estelle Parton June 1957 Floyd’s fraternal twin; ordained minister and former musician
12 Rachel Ann Parton George August 1959 Singer, actress, and Dolly’s cookbook collaborator

The list follows the conventional count of all 12 children born to Robert and Avie Lee Parton. Larry is included even though he died as an infant.

1. Willadeene Parton

Willadeene is the eldest of the Parton children, born in March 1940. She has been described publicly as a singer and writer and has written memoir-style books about the Parton family and its upbringing in East Tennessee.

Her connection to Dolly’s public legacy also reaches popular culture: the name Willadeene inspired the central character’s name in Dumplin’, the novel and subsequent film. A 2025 family update described Willadeene as living and doing well. Because her exact current age should be calculated from a freshly verified birth date, it is safer not to attach a changing age to her in an evergreen article.

2. David Wilburn Parton

David, born in March 1942, was Dolly’s oldest brother. Unlike Dolly and Stella, he largely avoided the entertainment spotlight. Public reporting described him as a bridge-builder superintendent for Simpson Construction.

Stella announced David’s death on November 15, 2024. A funeral-home obituary said he died at home. The reports reviewed did not disclose a cause of death, so claims about one should not be added to his story.

3. Coy Denver “Denver” Parton

Coy Denver Parton, commonly called Denver, was born in August 1943. He lived privately in the Sevierville area and worked as a crane operator involved in bridge construction. His obituary also described him as a homestead farmer and an avid hunter.

According to the Atchley Funeral Home obituary, Denver died on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at age 82. The obituary listed Bobby as his surviving brother and Willadeene, Dolly, Stella, Cassie, Freida, and Rachel as surviving sisters. No official cause of death was publicly disclosed in the sources reviewed.

4. Dolly Rebecca Parton

Dolly was born on January 19, 1946, as the fourth Parton child. She grew up in Locust Ridge, near the Great Smoky Mountains, in a household where music was a central part of family life.

Her siblings were not simply background figures in the story of her success. Several sang or played music with her, and Dolly’s family experiences became material for songs, films, books, and television projects. At the same time, the family story is broader than the careers of its best-known members: several Parton siblings worked outside show business and kept their lives private.

Rank #2

5. Robert Lee “Bobby” Parton Jr.

Robert Lee “Bobby” Parton Jr., generally known as Bobby, was born in February 1948. He has maintained a private life and is not associated with the same public entertainment career as Dolly or Stella.

Denver’s obituary identified Bobby as a surviving brother. Beyond that, reliable public information about Bobby’s occupation and current activities is limited. It is more accurate to leave those details unspecified than to repeat unsupported biographical claims.

6. Stella Mae Parton

Stella Parton is one of Dolly’s most publicly active siblings. Born in May 1949, she developed a career as a singer, songwriter, actress, writer, and cookbook author.

Stella also contributed directly to the television film Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, appearing as Corla Bass. She served as a family representative during production and drew on her knowledge of the siblings and their parents. The film dramatizes Dolly’s childhood and the family’s experience after the death of infant Larry.

Stella has also acted as a public family representative in more recent years. She announced David’s death in 2024 and commented publicly following Denver’s death in 2026.

7. Cassie Nan Parton

Cassie Nan Parton was born in February 1951. She is a singer who has appeared with Dolly in family-oriented performances and projects, although she has not pursued the same level of music-industry visibility as Dolly or Stella.

Her role illustrates an important distinction in accounts of the Parton family: having a musical connection to Dolly does not mean that every sibling became a full-time professional entertainer. Denver’s obituary identified Cassie Griffith among his surviving sisters.

8. Randel Huston “Randy” Parton

Randel Huston “Randy” Parton, born in December 1953, was a singer-songwriter who worked with Dolly and participated in family-related musical projects.

Dolly’s official site identified Randy and his sister Rachel as members of Honey Creek in connection with a 1999 gospel television special. Randy died at age 67 in January 2021 after cancer, according to family and entertainment reporting.

Randy’s career is one of the clearest examples of a sibling participating in Dolly’s broader musical world without becoming as famous as she did.

9. Larry Gerald Parton

Larry Gerald Parton was born in July 1955 and died four days later. Because he did not live to grow up with the other children, casual family lists sometimes describe Dolly as having 10 siblings. The more complete family count is that Dolly was one of 12 children and had 11 siblings, including Larry.

Larry’s brief life became a significant part of Dolly’s family story. His death was dramatized in the 2015 television film Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, which presents a fictionalized version of Dolly’s childhood rather than a documentary or comprehensive biography of every Parton sibling.

For readers specifically interested in how Larry’s story reached the screen, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors is the family-related film most directly connected to this part of the Parton story.

10. Estel Floyd Parton

Estel Floyd Parton, usually called Floyd, was born in June 1957 as one of a pair of fraternal twins. He was a musician and sometimes worked with Dolly.

Floyd died in December 2018 at age 61. His musical background places him among the siblings who contributed to the family’s artistic tradition, although he remained much less publicly known than Dolly.

11. Freida Estelle Parton

Freida Estelle Parton, Floyd’s twin, was also born in June 1957. She briefly pursued music before becoming an ordained minister.

Family reporting has also associated Freida with a chapel and antique store in Tennessee. She has remained publicly connected to the Parton family, and Denver’s obituary identified her as one of his surviving sisters.

12. Rachel Ann Parton George

Rachel Ann Parton George is the youngest of the Parton children, born in August 1959. She has worked as a singer and actress and has remained involved in family creative projects.

Her most prominent recent collaboration with Dolly is Good Lookin’ Cookin’: A Year of Meals—A Lifetime of Family, Friends, and Food, co-written with Dolly and Maurice Miner. The hardcover was released on September 17, 2024. The book includes more than 80 recipes, family photographs, stories, and 12 seasonal menus.

For readers interested in the domestic side of the Parton family story, Good Lookin’ Cookin’: A Year of Meals—A Lifetime of Family, Friends, and Food is the most direct sibling-related recommendation: it connects Dolly and Rachel through recipes, memories, photographs, and family traditions. Which of Dolly Parton’s siblings are still living?

As of August 11, 2026, public sources reviewed identify Willadeene, Bobby, Stella, Cassie, Freida, and Rachel as surviving siblings. The deceased siblings are Larry, who died in infancy in July 1955; Floyd, who died in December 2018; Randy, who died in January 2021; David, who died on November 15, 2024; and Denver, who died on July 23, 2026.

How Dolly’s siblings influenced her work

The Parton siblings form part of the musical and cultural environment that Dolly has repeatedly connected to her identity. Dolly’s official biography describes music as deeply rooted in the family, and the family’s history in East Tennessee provides the setting for much of the imagery associated with her childhood.

The influence is visible in several documented projects:

  • Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors: The television film draws on Dolly’s childhood and the death of Larry. Stella participated in production and appeared in the film.
  • Good Lookin’ Cookin’: Rachel collaborated with Dolly on a cookbook built around family meals, photographs, stories, recipes, and seasonal menus.
  • Family music: Stella, Randy, Floyd, Cassie, Rachel, and other relatives have had documented musical or performance connections. Dolly and Rachel were also identified as members of Honey Creek with Randy in connection with a 1999 gospel television special.
  • The wider family tradition: Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith & Fables involved five generations of Parton and Owens family members. It represents the broader family network and should not be confused with a list of Dolly’s direct siblings; relatives such as Uncle Bill Owens belong to the extended family.

The most accurate overall picture is therefore not “12 celebrity musicians.” Dolly’s family included several entertainers, but also siblings who worked in construction, farming, ministry, and other private pursuits.

Why different sources give different sibling counts

The apparent disagreement between 10 and 11 siblings usually comes from how Larry is counted. Larry was one of Robert and Avie Lee Parton’s children, but he died four days after birth. A source focused on the children who grew up together may say Dolly had 10 siblings. A complete birth-order list counts Larry and says Dolly had 11 siblings.

For clarity, the best wording is: Dolly Parton was one of 12 children and had 11 siblings, although one sibling died in infancy.

The Bottom Line

She was the fourth of 12 children raised in East Tennessee, with siblings who became singers, writers, actors, ministers, construction workers, farmers, and private citizens. Their lives—and especially the stories of Larry, Stella, Randy, Floyd, and Rachel—continue to appear in Dolly’s films, music, books, and family-centered projects.
