Verdict: Dolly is an atmospheric, graphic backwoods horror film whose strongest ideas concern forced parenthood, grief and the fear of being assigned a family role. Fabianne Therese gives Macy a committed survival performance, and Max the Impaler’s physical work makes Dolly an immediately memorable creature. The film’s repeated escape-and-recapture pattern can feel familiar and lethargic, however, so it is best suited to viewers who value practical monster design and old-school slasher imagery more than structural surprise.
What is Dolly about?
Rod Blackhurst’s 2026 feature Dolly begins with a seemingly ordinary relationship milestone. Chase takes his girlfriend Macy on a woodland hike, planning to propose. Macy is carrying a more complicated concern: she is unsure whether she wants to become a stepmother to Chase’s daughter, Evy. The outing turns into a nightmare when a towering, masked figure attacks the couple and abducts Macy.
That figure is Dolly, a person in a blond wig and an infantile, doll-like mask. Dolly speaks little and behaves as if childhood games are a private religion. Her stated objective, as Apple TV’s synopsis puts it, is to raise Macy as a child. The premise turns a conventional abduction setup into a grotesque argument about who gets to define a family and what happens when care becomes possession.
This is a spoiler-light review. It discusses the film’s setup, themes, design and critical reception without explaining later revelations or the exact outcome of Macy’s ordeal.

The central idea: motherhood as a horror mechanism
Dolly uses motherhood in two opposing ways. Macy sees the possibility of becoming a stepmother as a life decision she has not made. Dolly treats parenthood as an entitlement she can impose on another person. The conflict is frightening because both positions involve care, but only one of them includes consent.
The film does not present Macy’s hesitation as proof that she is cold or selfish. Her uncertainty is a recognizable response to a major family commitment, especially one involving a child who already has an established parent. Dolly’s behavior then turns that ordinary hesitation into a nightmare scenario: Macy is reduced to the role of “child” and denied the adult agency she was trying to protect.
In a March 2026 interview with Cinema Sugar, Blackhurst described the opposing characters as people with incompatible goals. His explanation links Macy’s unwilling confrontation with motherhood to Dolly’s attempt to fill a void created by maternal loss. That interpretation gives the violence an emotional logic without excusing it. Dolly is not simply a masked attacker who happens to use nursery imagery; the mask and the abduction express a damaged idea of family.

The motherly-mask framing is therefore more useful than treating Dolly as a mystery to be solved. The doll face looks childlike, but its blankness removes the ordinary signals by which we read another person’s feelings. It makes nurturing imagery threatening. A face associated with innocence becomes a surface onto which grief, control and fantasy are projected.
How the film builds its threat
A figure designed to be seen at a distance
Dolly is physically imposing before the film explains anything about her. The blond wig, enlarged silhouette and doll mask create a shape that can be recognized through trees, doorways or the edge of a frame. That clarity matters in a movie built around pursuit: the audience does not need to wonder whether a shadow is the monster. The dread comes from knowing exactly what is approaching.

Max the Impaler was cast for the physical performance the part required, according to Blackhurst’s interview with Eye For Film. Dolly’s limited speech puts pressure on posture, timing and movement. A turn of the head or a pause before an attack has to communicate intention that dialogue would normally supply. The result is a killer who feels closer to a storybook bogey figure than to a conventional quip-spouting slasher villain.
A practical mask with recognizable ancestors
Blackhurst told ComicBookMovie.com that Dolly’s design drew on Tourist Trap, Halloween, Leatherface, Child’s Play and Shirley Temple dolls. He also recalled seeing a cracked, disfigured Shirley Temple doll while growing up. Those references explain why Dolly’s face feels familiar and wrong at the same time. The design borrows the uncanny cheerfulness of a doll and the threat of a human predator without becoming a simple copy of either.
Dan Martin created the mask. Ashley Thomas and Al Solorzano handled the practical makeup effects, Blackhurst told Eye For Film. The practical approach is one of the film’s clearest pleasures. Close views of the mask give the violence a tactile quality that computer-generated polish might have softened. You can read the wear, shape and expressionless surface as an object being carried through the world rather than an effect pasted over it.
Why the design suits the story
The mask is not merely a marketing image. It externalizes the film’s question about imposed identities. Macy is expected to occupy a family role, while Dolly performs an idea of childhood that has hardened into ritual. Both characters are being asked to become something for someone else. The visual contrast between a human face and a doll face keeps that conflict visible even when the plot is focused on escape.
Fabianne Therese carries the survival story
Fabianne Therese’s Macy is the film’s emotional anchor. She has to register several fears at once: immediate physical danger, uncertainty about Chase’s proposal, guilt or confusion about Evy, and the destabilizing experience of being treated as a child. Therese makes those reactions legible without turning Macy into a passive victim waiting for rescue.
The Guardian critic Leslie Felperin specifically praised Therese’s ability to channel terror and distress, especially late in the film. Felperin wrote that Therese “is very good at channelling terror and distress; she really gets to go hog wild with those modes at the end in one long tribute to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” That is a critical judgment, not a promise that every viewer will respond identically, but it identifies where the performance has its greatest force: Macy’s fear becomes physical, exhausting and difficult to contain.

Seann William Scott’s Chase functions primarily as the relationship’s pressure point. His proposal plan gives the opening an intended future, while Macy’s reluctance complicates that future before Dolly arrives. Ethan Suplee’s Tobe is part of the surrounding human world, helping the film feel populated rather than like a two-character exercise isolated from ordinary life. The story nevertheless stays close to Macy’s experience, and the supporting roles are less developed than the central conflict.
Structure and pacing: repetition versus escalation
The film’s basic engine is a sequence of escapes and recaptures. That pattern is easy to understand and allows Blackhurst to vary settings, injuries and tactics while keeping Dolly’s threat present. It also creates the movie’s main weakness. Once the audience understands that an apparent break from danger may only lead to another capture, suspense can flatten into expectation.
Felperin called the chase structure “a bit of a snooze.” The bluntness of that assessment is useful because the issue is not that Dolly lacks action. It is that movement alone does not guarantee progression. Each escape needs to change Macy’s knowledge, resources or relationship to the threat. When a sequence resets those elements too completely, the film feels as if it is circling its premise rather than tightening it.
Viewers who enjoy endurance horror may experience the repetition differently. The recurrence can feel like a deliberate trap: Macy is forced to relive the same power imbalance while Dolly’s childlike routines make the ordeal feel ritualistic. The question is whether the scene-to-scene variation is enough to sustain that interpretation. For some audiences, the practical gore and Therese’s performance supply the needed momentum; for others, the familiar chase architecture will arrive at its limit before the film does.

That is an expression of creative intent at the time of the interview, not confirmation that a sequel has been announced or released. In the film as it stands, the contained design keeps attention on Macy and Dolly rather than expanding into a mythology-heavy franchise setup.
Violence, gore and the R rating
Dolly is not a mild thriller with a spooky costume. Apple TV’s U.S. listing rates it R for strong violence, gore, grisly images, language and some nudity. The Guardian also describes it as gory and emphasizes its violent chase sequences. Anyone avoiding graphic injury, blood effects or sustained menace should treat those descriptors as a practical warning.

The violence serves two functions. On the surface, it delivers the old-school slasher appeal promised by the mask and woodland setting. At the thematic level, it turns the struggle over care and control into bodily danger. Blackhurst has connected the characters’ conflicting relationships to motherhood with the film’s gore and violence, so the brutality is not presented as entirely detached spectacle.
That connection does not make the movie suitable for children. The title and doll imagery may suggest a toy-based fantasy, but the content is firmly adult horror. The R rating also includes language and some nudity, not only the attacks.

It is a character-centered slasher
The strongest way to approach Dolly is as a survival film in which the monster’s design reflects the protagonist’s emotional problem. The story is less interested in procedural realism than in turning a family decision into an enclosed nightmare. The woodland location, limited speech and repeated pursuit give it the shape of a modern campfire tale with explicit violence.
It is not a documentary or a family film
Nothing about the motherly framing changes the genre classification. Apple TV identifies the movie as a U.S. horror/thriller, and its rating descriptors make the intended audience clear. The family language is thematic material, not a signal that the film is appropriate for children or that it offers a realistic account of step-parenting.
It is not a major formal reinvention
The available critical discussion supports calling the movie atmospheric, practical-effects-driven and familiar in its slasher mechanics. It does not support describing Dolly as a genre breakthrough. The design has distinctive details, but the film works within recognizable horror traditions rather than overturning them.

The reception is mixed in a way that mirrors the film’s strengths and limitations. Felperin’s Guardian review values Therese’s performance and the intensity of the late violence while finding the repeated chase structure sluggish. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critic excerpts include one response calling the movie predictable and another emphasizing its DIY, backwoods quality.

Rotten Tomatoes currently displays a 60% Tomatometer from 86 reviews and an average score of 5.8. Apple TV also shows a 60% Tomatometer reference. Those numbers are snapshots of a changing aggregator page, not permanent properties of the film. Reviews can be added, removed or recalculated, and the displayed figure should be read as a current indicator rather than a final verdict.
The disagreement is easy to understand. If your priority is novelty in plot construction, the predictable elements may dominate. If you respond to handmade creature work, rural atmosphere and a performer willing to push panic into physical exhaustion, the same film may feel more effective. Neither reaction requires pretending that the pacing problem is absent.
Is Dolly worth watching?
Watch it if:
- You want a graphic, old-school slasher with a practical creature design.
- You enjoy horror that turns family roles, grief and control into the source of its monster.
- You are willing to follow a contained chase narrative whose tension depends on performance and atmosphere.
- You appreciate a lead performance built around sustained fear rather than one-liners or detective work.
Approach with caution if:
- Repeated escapes and recaptures quickly lose your interest.
- You need a highly original mythology or a plot that constantly changes direction.
- Graphic gore, grisly images, strong violence or some nudity are deal-breakers.
- The doll-mask premise might lead you to expect a child-friendly film.
My recommendation is qualified but positive for the right horror audience. Dolly has a clear visual identity and a meaningful central conflict, and Therese gives the material enough emotional force to prevent Macy from becoming only a target. Its familiar structure keeps it from being an essential genre landmark, but fans of tactile effects and compact backwoods horror should find enough to make the trip worthwhile.

Final assessment
Dolly makes its best case through the collision of an expressive practical mask and a premise about unwanted parenthood. Macy fears being pushed into a role she has not accepted; Dolly responds to loss by forcing another person into a role she believes will repair it. That is a strong horror metaphor, and Blackhurst gives it a memorable body through Max the Impaler’s performance, Dan Martin’s mask and the practical effects by Ashley Thomas and Al Solorzano.
The film’s limitation is equally clear: the escape-and-recapture rhythm can become repetitive, and critics are divided over whether the performances and rough backwoods energy overcome that design. If you want an inventive slasher that rewrites the rules, look elsewhere. If you want a bloody, storybook-shaped survival movie in which a motherly image becomes a threat, Dolly is a worthwhile watch with a deliberately unsettling face.
