Does OBS Need a GPU for a 24/7 YouTube Loop Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No—a dedicated GPU is not a universal requirement. OBS can use CPU-based x264 software encoding, and supported integrated graphics may also provide hardware encoding. Whether your current PC can run a 24/7 loop reliably depends on its encoder, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, network, and power and cooling—not simply whether it has a separate graphics card.

What OBS needs—and what it does not

OBS’s system requirements include compatible graphics support, but that does not mean every user needs a discrete graphics card. OBS supports x264, which encodes video on the CPU, as well as hardware encoders available on supported graphics hardware. Depending on the computer, the latter may be NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync. Check that your operating system and OBS can use a compatible graphics adapter; integrated graphics and a separate graphics card are different things.

OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A simple loop scene may be lighter to render than a scene with multiple sources and complex compositing, but that is a workload-based expectation, not a guarantee or a published benchmark. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU work; its availability and video quality depend on the specific hardware generation. OBS describes modern hardware encoders as providing “very good quality video with minimal performance impact.” OBS: Hardware Encoding and OBS: System Requirements explain the relevant distinctions.

Choose the encoder and output your PC can sustain

You do not need to buy a GPU just because you plan to loop a video. First try the existing computer with an encoder it supports and a modest output setting. If the machine is struggling, reduce the workload or test another available encoder before deciding an upgrade is necessary.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • x264: Uses the CPU. It is an option when the system can encode the selected output without becoming overloaded.
  • Hardware encoding: Can lower CPU load, but the encoder and its quality vary by device and hardware generation. Do not assume all NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync implementations perform identically.
  • Output and scene: Resolution, FPS, and scene complexity affect the workload. Start with the resolution and frame rate you actually need; avoid adding unnecessary sources or effects.

There is no universally best encoder or one configuration that guarantees a 24/7 stream. Match the choice to the machine and verify it under your intended settings. See OBS: Encoding Performance.

For H.264, YouTube recommends the following bitrates for these common outputs. They are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 FPS 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 FPS 6 Mbps

YouTube also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval no longer than four seconds. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the selected streaming encoder’s rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Exact available controls and labels can vary by encoder. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain; YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For details and other resolutions, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips.

Test the loop before leaving it unattended

  1. Prepare the loop scene. Add the video source and check that playback, audio, and any transitions behave as intended. Keep the scene as simple as practical.
  2. Set the output. In OBS, open Settings > Video to select the output resolution and FPS, then Settings > Output to select an available encoder and set its streaming values. Use settings appropriate for the computer and upload connection.
  3. Connect to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in OBS’s stream configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. Confirm the YouTube preview receives the intended video and audio before going live.
  4. Run a test and monitor it. Check OBS for rendering or encoding overload and dropped frames, and check YouTube’s stream health and preview. Test at the output settings you intend to use, and monitor the video and audio feed. A short successful test is useful, but it does not establish that a machine will remain stable for a full day.
  5. Plan for continuity. Continuous operation depends on the PC, OBS, power, cooling, network, and configuration. YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream; its documentation does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation from a particular setup.

Keep a separate archive if the recording matters

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive limitation, not a stated cutoff for a live broadcast. If you need a complete copy, make a local recording and verify that your computer has enough storage and capacity to record while streaming. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot the likely bottleneck

  • OBS reports encoding or rendering overload: Lower the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or test a different encoder supported by the system. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but is not guaranteed to solve every performance problem.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops frames: Check the upload connection, lower the bitrate if needed, and preserve the recommended upload headroom. Test for network instability rather than assuming the GPU is at fault.
  • Video or audio is missing from the preview: Check the OBS source, playback and audio settings, and confirm the intended stream is selected in YouTube Studio before going live.
  • The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when you need an archive.
  • The setup works briefly but not continuously: A short test cannot verify long-run stability. Check power, cooling, network continuity, and OBS status during a longer supervised test; the cited platform guidance does not specify a universal 24/7 PC configuration.
