Actor Natalie Morales discusses the premiere and Monica’s death in Shondaland’s interview.
Why the show chose Monica
Showrunner Meg Marinis told Shondaland that she initially hoped the explosion would not claim anyone’s life. But its scale made a death feel necessary to the story. After weighing the consequences for other characters, she settled on Monica, a character she said was one of her favorite introductions to the show. Marinis recalled the moment she committed to the choice: “I think Monica.”

#1 Best Overall
Monica’s death also becomes a defining event in Jules’s career. Jules has to save a child without having done so before, while also facing the loss of a mentor and colleague.
How the next episode follows Jules’s grief
Episode 2 does not treat the explosion’s trauma as resolved. Shondaland’s episode recap describes Jules as agitated and experiencing panic attacks during procedures. By the episode’s end, Jules recognizes that she needs support and joins Simone, Kwan, and Lucas for a candlelight vigil. She reflects on the privilege of learning from Monica.

What the Season 22 episode listing confirms
ABC’s official listing gives Season 22 through episode 18, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” whose synopsis concerns a catastrophic bridge collapse and Grey Sloan’s disaster response. That listing is not evidence that Monica returns, so it should not be read as confirmation of a return.
The episode 18 date differs between the two ABC listings: ABC Press lists May 7, 2026, while ABC’s episode page lists May 8, 2026. This is a listing discrepancy, not a conflict about Monica’s fate.
