Joker: Folie à Deux can feel as if it reverses the first film, but “contradiction” is not the only explanation. The sequel questions what Arthur Fleck’s Joker identity means, blurring the line between the man, the persona others project onto him, and musical or subjective experience. To establish a true continuity contradiction, a specific earlier fact must conflict with a specific later event; the available criticism supports a broader argument about reinterpretation, not a comprehensive list of such errors.
What the sequel appears to contradict
The central tension is between Arthur Fleck and the Joker as a public symbol. In the first film, Arthur’s actions help create a figure that people outside him can interpret and appropriate. The sequel examines the consequences of those actions and the distance between the person and the persona. The Associated Press describes it as a self-conscious rejoinder to the first film that interrogates Arthur’s earlier actions, rather than simply continuing them as an uncomplicated origin story. That shift can frustrate viewers who expected the sequel to confirm Arthur as the familiar Joker. But a thwarted expectation is not, by itself, a contradiction. A contradiction would require the films to establish incompatible facts—for example, one film showing an event happened and the other establishing that it did not. The critical sources cited here do not catalogue that kind of scene-by-scene conflict.
Is Arthur Fleck really the Joker?
The sequel’s ending has been read as separating Arthur from the Joker identity that others attach to him. A DC.com essay makes that case, arguing that Arthur is not really the Joker; it is an interpretive argument, not an institutional declaration. The page explicitly says its views do not necessarily reflect DC or Warner Bros. DC.com, “Joker: Folie À Deux Shows Us How Ideas are Bulletproof” (Oct. 8, 2024).

Director Todd Phillips offered a related, but not definitive, framing in comments reported by TIME. He described Arthur as an “unwilling, unwitting symbol” paying for the first film’s crimes while finding the thing he wanted: love. That helps explain the film’s emphasis on the person beneath the symbol, but it is Phillips’s account of the character, not the only valid interpretation of the ending. How to tell a contradiction from a change in perspective
When a moment in the sequel seems to undo the first film, check what has actually changed. These distinctions help separate a continuity conflict from a deliberate change in meaning:

- Event versus interpretation: Does the sequel change what happened, or does it give an earlier action a different meaning?
- Arthur versus persona: Is a scene about Arthur himself, or about the Joker performance and public identity others expect from him?
- Literal action versus subjective experience: Is the scene presented as an event in the story world, or as fantasy, performance, or an internal experience?
- Established fact versus expected payoff: Did the first film establish a fact that the sequel reverses, or did it leave an expectation unanswered?
The first film deliberately left some questions open, as Phillips discussed when addressing audience theories about its ending. That context makes a shift in interpretation plausible, but it does not settle every apparent discrepancy in the sequel. Do the musical scenes make the story contradictory?
Not on their own. Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver described the musical idea as asking what would need to be true for two people to break into song during a conversation. That explains the creative premise; it does not establish a rule that every song is either literally performed or wholly imagined. Each sequence still has to be read on its own terms. A song may express what a character feels, stage a performance, or occupy an ambiguous space between those modes. Treating musical form itself as proof of a continuity error skips the more useful question: what does the scene establish about the characters and events, and does a later scene actually conflict with it?

The strongest supported reading is that Joker: Folie à Deux puts pressure on the distinction between Arthur and the Joker symbol, and invites viewers to reconsider the first film rather than simply confirm a familiar origin story. That can feel like contradiction, especially if the sequel’s choices clash with what a viewer expected the story to become.

But the claim that it “contradicts itself over and over” requires named pairs of incompatible events. The cited reviews and commentary establish a deliberate interpretive tension; they do not supply an exhaustive list of continuity errors or prove that every perceived inconsistency is intentional. Each alleged contradiction needs to be judged against what the films actually establish.
