Yes. Bandcamp prohibits music or audio “generated wholly or in substantial part by AI,” and separately prohibits using AI to impersonate another artist or style. The policy does not ban every use of AI in music production: Bandcamp has not published a percentage threshold, a list of permitted workflows, or a detection method, so some AI-assisted cases remain unclear.
What Bandcamp’s AI music policy prohibits
In its January 13, 2026 announcement, “Keeping Bandcamp Human”, Bandcamp stated: “Music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI is not permitted on Bandcamp.” Its Acceptable Use and Moderation Policy similarly bars music or audio “wholly or in substantial part created, composed, or generated by artificial intelligence.”
There is a second, independent prohibition: Bandcamp says that “Any use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or styles is strictly prohibited” under its existing rules against impersonation and intellectual-property infringement. That rule applies whether or not the work would otherwise meet the “substantial part” threshold.
Does the rule ban all AI-assisted music?
No blanket ban on any AI involvement appears in the published wording. The stated threshold is music or audio generated wholly or in substantial part by AI—not simply a track that involved an AI tool at some point. But Bandcamp does not define “substantial part,” give examples of allowed and disallowed production methods, or offer a percentage test. The policy therefore does not establish a reliable safe harbor for limited assistance.

For example, the published guidance does not say conclusively whether AI-assisted mastering, AI-suggested chords, generated stems incorporated into a human-led production, or synthetic vocals are permitted. Those cases turn on Bandcamp’s assessment of the work; creators should not treat any one production step as automatically allowed or prohibited based on the public text alone. Ars Technica likewise reported that Bandcamp had not specified how it would identify AI-generated content.
How to report suspected AI-generated music
Bandcamp asks users to report music that appears entirely or heavily reliant on generative AI. Its Acceptable Use and Moderation Policy directs users to submit a Take Down Request through the report option on the relevant page or by contacting Bandcamp.

Bandcamp says it reserves the right to remove music on suspicion of being AI-generated. The public policy does not describe a technical detection system or a specific evidentiary test for deciding a report.
Who reviews reports, and what can happen?
Bandcamp’s moderation policy says a human team makes decisions and humans review reports rather than relying on automated decisions. The policy also says Bandcamp determines breaches at its discretion. If it finds a violation, possible actions include removing the content, issuing a warning, or temporarily or permanently withdrawing the user’s access to the site.

The policy says Bandcamp will provide a Statement of Reasons when it removes or disables content or an account, and also when it declines to remove reported content. For EU citizens, it describes a route to request review of certain decisions within six months. A legal-team review aims to respond within eight weeks, and a further review by senior management also aims to respond within eight weeks. The policy mentions referral to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body; when the page was accessed, Bandcamp said it was awaiting a certified EU list. These review procedures are EU-specific, not a global appeal guarantee.

The upload ban is distinct from a provision in Bandcamp’s Terms of Use concerning how artists’ music may be used. The terms say Bandcamp will not use, or permit others to use, artists’ music to train models that generate sound recordings, music videos, or musical works embodied in them without the artist’s express permission.

What the policy means for creators
- Fully or substantially AI-generated audio: expressly prohibited by Bandcamp’s published policy.
- AI used to imitate an artist or style: separately prohibited, regardless of the substantial-part question.
- Limited AI assistance: not categorically prohibited in the wording, but the policy does not define where assistance becomes substantial.
- Borderline production choices: the public rules do not settle them; Bandcamp retains discretion to assess suspected violations.
