Yes—if the account owner chooses the ad-supported extra-member option. Netflix also offers an ad-free extra-member option where available. The extra member’s choice does not change the account owner’s own Netflix experience.

How advertising works for an extra member
An extra member with ads sees Netflix’s ad-supported experience: Netflix describes this as a few short ads per hour before and during selected movies and TV shows. Ads generally cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded, although they can be paused. Netflix does not promise a fixed number of ads for every title or hour. See Netflix’s advertising information.
These ads are shown only in the extra member’s experience. Netflix says they do not change the account owner’s profile, plan, or viewing experience.

Some titles may be unavailable
Most titles are available on the ad-supported experience, but licensing restrictions mean a small number may be locked. A lock icon identifies titles unavailable on that tier.
Games, Kids profiles, and live events
- Netflix games do not show ads.
- Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles, but an extra-member profile itself cannot be a Kids profile.
- Live or special events can contain commercial breaks even on an ad-free plan, so “ad-free” does not guarantee that every live broadcast is interruption-free.

Who can add an extra member?
Eligible main plans
- A Standard plan can generally add up to one extra member.
- A Premium plan can generally add up to two extra members.
- A Standard with ads plan cannot add an extra member. The owner generally must change to an eligible Standard or Premium plan first.
Availability varies by country and billing arrangement. Extra members normally must be activated in the same country where the owner created the Netflix account. Overseas territories and some package-billed accounts can have additional restrictions.
Who pays?
The account owner pays for the extra-member slot. The invited person receives a separate login, password, and profile but normally does not enter a payment method.

How to add an extra member and choose no ads
For an account billed directly by Netflix:
- Go to
netflix.com/account. - Select Buy an extra member slot.
- Select Next for the default extra-member option with ads.
- To buy ad-free access, select Or pay for no ads below the Next button.
- Select Continue, review the payment amount, and select Buy Now.
- Enter the extra member’s name and email address.
- Transfer an eligible existing profile or create a new one.
- Netflix sends an invitation link.
The invited person opens the email or text, selects the link, chooses Get Started and Next, creates a password, then accepts the transferred profile or creates one. Invitation links expire after 72 hours; the owner can resend an expired invitation, and Netflix also provides activation through its app.

Netflix does not provide a simple ad-setting toggle. The owner must remove the current slot and create it again with the other choice:

netflix.com/account/membership/extra-members. - Select Remove recipient and confirm.
- Select Set up invitation.
- Choose with ads or without ads, then send the invitation again.
The removed extra member loses access immediately. Netflix says the extra member can be changed up to two times per calendar month, and some plans may require waiting until the next billing date before the replacement slot takes effect.
Problems that can block or end an extra-member slot
Provider or package billing
Some cable, mobile, and streaming packages do not support extra members. Where they do, the provider may cover the main plan while Netflix charges the extra member separately or requires another payment method. Check the provider-specific rules in Netflix’s package-billing help.
Country mismatch or travel
Activation generally must occur in the account owner’s signup country. A different country, temporary travel, or an ad-supported regional availability issue can produce an error. Netflix lists troubleshooting information at its regional-error help page.
Main-account changes
Canceling the primary account cancels its extra-member slots. Switching to a package that supports fewer slots—or none—can also cancel existing extra members.

When a separate Netflix account is better
- The viewer needs multiple profiles.
- More than one supported device must stream at the same time.
- The viewer wants to pay with their own payment method and control their plan.
- The viewer lives in a different country.
- The viewer needs features an extra-member slot cannot independently provide.
