Apple Removed a Calendar App That Reportedly Streamed Pirated Movies and TV Shows

A calendar app called Univer Note reportedly exposed unauthorized movies and TV shows in some countries before Apple removed it. The incident reveals the limits of App Store review without proving universal access or malware.

Apple approved an iPhone and iPad app called Univer Note that was presented as a calendar and planning tool but reportedly displayed unauthorized movies and television programs in some countries. The discrepancy was reported on November 4, 2024, after the app had apparently been available since September. Apple removed it from the App Store after the reports, although the available evidence does not establish exactly how the app evaded review or what Apple changed afterward.

What happened with Univer Note?

Univer Note’s App Store listing described a scheduling or planning application. According to contemporaneous reporting, however, users in certain countries could open a catalog of films and television shows and watch content that appeared to be unauthorized. Reported examples included Smile 2, Venom: The Last Dance, and programming associated with Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+.

Those examples come from reporting about what the app displayed, not from an official Apple catalog or a published licensing investigation. The most defensible description is that Univer Note was reported to stream unauthorized copies; the available sources do not independently adjudicate the rights status of every title.

MacRumors reported the discrepancy on November 4, 2024, attributing the discovery to a post by Kevin Aubin. Apple subsequently removed the app. The incident report is available at MacRumors.

The timeline and removal status

When What is established
September 2024 Univer Note was reportedly present in the App Store. The exact date when the movie interface appeared is not established.
November 4, 2024 Coverage described the mismatch between the calendar listing and the reported movie and television catalog.
After the reports Apple removed Univer Note from the App Store.

Apple has not publicly provided, in the sources available for this incident, a detailed account of what its reviewers saw, whether the developer account was expelled, or what internal remediation followed.

It was not necessarily available to every iPhone user

The reported behavior was region-specific. The piracy interface was observed in countries including Canada and France, while the U.S. version appeared to function as an ordinary calendar app. That means the headline should not be read as saying that every U.S. App Store customer could download a piracy service.

Regional behavior can vary by storefront, account, location, or configuration. The reporting does not document every possible account state, so it would be too categorical to claim that no U.S. user could ever have seen the other interface. What is established is the contrast between the reported Canadian and French behavior and the apparently benign U.S. presentation.

How could an app like this pass review?

No source reviewed for this incident establishes the technical mechanism. Several explanations are plausible, but they remain hypotheses:

Different behavior by country

The submission shown to reviewers may have returned a calendar interface in the review environment while delivering a different catalog to users in selected storefronts.

Remote configuration

A server-controlled setting could have changed what the app displayed after approval. The report supports an observed difference between regions, but does not prove that server-side switching was used.

Changes after approval

The app may have altered its behavior after it passed review. Apple’s public account of the incident does not say whether that happened.

The limits of a review snapshot

Apple says it reviews every App Store app and update, but an approval review is not the same as continuous inspection of every server response, country-specific feature, or title added later. Automated checks and human testing can miss functionality that is hidden, conditional, or activated only after publication.

What Apple’s rules prohibit

Apple’s App Review Guidelines prohibit deceptive conduct and attempts to manipulate the review process. Apple says apps that trick review, steal data, copy another developer’s work, or manipulate App Store systems can be removed and may lead to expulsion from the Developer Program.

Those rules are relevant because a calendar listing paired with a materially different entertainment service would appear inconsistent with the disclosure Apple requires. They do not, by themselves, prove the developer’s intent or identify the precise technical path by which the app reached users.

What this says about the App Store’s “walled garden”

The episode demonstrates that App Store review is not infallible and is not a guarantee that every item an approved app later displays is licensed. It also shows why post-publication monitoring and user reports matter when an app’s runtime behavior differs from its description.

That limitation should not be inflated into a claim that the App Store is equivalent to an unregulated download site. Apple’s review system, signing requirements, distribution controls, and enforcement mechanisms still create barriers that do not exist in open sideloading environments. The narrower conclusion is that Apple’s controls depend on accurate disclosures, representative testing, monitoring, and the ability to remove an app when a discrepancy is found.

A separate earlier case: Kimi

Univer Note was not the only reported example of a misleading App Store listing exposing unauthorized video. MacRumors reported in February 2024 that an app called Kimi, described as a vision-testing tool, opened to a movie and television interface and reached number eight among free entertainment apps before Apple removed it. That incident is separate; the available evidence does not establish a connection between Kimi and Univer Note.

The two cases nevertheless illustrate the same broad weakness: a misdescribed or deceptive app can attract users before post-publication scrutiny catches the mismatch. See the MacRumors report on Kimi for that earlier episode.

What the incident does not prove

  • It does not prove that Apple knowingly distributed pirated movies.
  • It does not show that the piracy interface was available worldwide or to every U.S. account.
  • It does not establish that the app contained malware, stole data, or endangered devices.
  • It does not reveal whether the developer deliberately deceived Apple, misconfigured the app, or experienced another failure.
  • It does not demonstrate that Apple changed its review policy because of this case.

What users should do with a suspicious app

An App Store listing is not, on its own, proof that every feature or item delivered by an app is legitimate. If an app’s behavior materially differs from its description, avoid entering sensitive information, stop using it, and report the discrepancy through Apple’s official channels. Because Univer Note was removed, seeking an archived copy or installing it through an unofficial channel would add avoidable security and copyright risks.

Why later anti-piracy figures do not settle this case

In a 2026 report about 2025 activity, Apple said it rejected more than two million problematic app submissions and detected or blocked 28,000 illegitimate apps on pirate storefronts. Those figures describe Apple’s broader anti-fraud and anti-piracy work; they do not show that the company prevented or specifically corrected the 2024 Univer Note failure. The report is available in Apple’s Newsroom.

The Bottom Line

Univer Note was a real App Store incident: a calendar-described app reportedly exposed unauthorized movies and television shows in some countries before Apple removed it. The case exposes a gap between one-time approval and real-world, region-specific app behavior, but it does not prove universal access, malware, or that every App Store app is unsafe.
