A Mac mini can sleep if its power settings allow it, and sleep may interrupt the streaming app and other running tasks. To keep the computer awake while its display turns off, open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. That prevents automatic system sleep under the conditions described by Apple, but it does not guarantee a YouTube stream will survive an app crash, power outage, or network interruption.
Stop your Mac mini from sleeping while streaming
- Open Energy settings. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Energy on your desktop Mac.
- Prevent automatic sleep. Turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Apple describes this as preventing the Mac from going to sleep automatically while its display is off. Availability and labels can vary by Mac and macOS version. Apple’s desktop Energy settings guide
- Set display timeout separately. In Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen, adjust when the display turns off. The display going dark and the computer going to sleep are separate behaviors, so you do not have to leave a monitor on just to keep the Mac awake. Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide
- Check the stream after the change. Confirm the streaming application remains open and the YouTube broadcast is still receiving video. The Energy setting addresses automatic Mac sleep; it is not a stream-recovery setting.
What sleep prevention does—and does not—solve
Apple recommends preventing sleep when setting up a Mac mini as a server, noting: “If your Mac mini goes to sleep, currently running tasks and processes may be interrupted.” A livestream depends on more than the Mac staying awake: the streaming app, network connection, and power must also remain available. Apple’s sleep guidance does not establish that YouTube will reconnect or resume a broadcast after any particular interruption. Apple: Set up your Mac mini as a server
- Wake for network access is different. This option concerns access to shared resources while the Mac is sleeping. It is not a substitute for preventing sleep during a live stream. Apple’s Energy settings guide
- A restart may not reopen your stream. Apple notes that after a restart—for example, following a power outage or macOS update—some server apps may need to be relaunched manually unless configured to open automatically. Check your streaming app’s own launch and recovery options.
- Sleep settings can affect energy use. Apple warns that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption. Letting the display turn off while the computer stays awake can avoid keeping the screen lit, but it does not make an always-awake computer consume no power.
Choose whether to keep the display on or let it turn off
| Setup | Mac behavior | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep display on | The display remains available for monitoring; configure Energy settings so the Mac does not sleep. | You need to watch the stream or desktop continuously. | Uses display power while unattended. |
| Turn display off, prevent computer sleep | The display can turn off on its Lock Screen schedule while the Mac stays awake. | You want the stream to keep running without a visible desktop. | The Mac still remains powered on and awake; Apple warns sleep changes may increase power use. |
If you monitor remotely, test the arrangement before relying on it for a long broadcast. Apple’s current Mac mini tour covers M4 and M4 Pro models; the status indicator is lit when the computer is awake or sleeping and unlit when it is off, so the light alone does not tell you whether it is awake. Power outages, network drops, and unexpected sleep
After a power interruption
In System Settings > Energy, review Start up automatically after a power failure if that option is available on your Mac. Apple also lists UPS options in Energy settings. A compatible UPS may help with some local power interruptions, but it does not protect the internet connection or guarantee that a YouTube broadcast resumes. If the Mac restarts, verify whether your streaming app launches and whether you must manually restore the broadcast. Apple’s Energy settings guide Apple’s Mac mini server guidance

If the Mac still sleeps or wakes unexpectedly
Apple recommends checking sleep settings, background activity, connected devices, Spotlight indexing, and other possible causes. Work through those checks in Apple’s troubleshooting guide rather than assuming the stream itself caused the sleep behavior. Apple: If your Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly
If the stream stops while the Mac stays awake
Treat this as a separate streaming failure: check whether the streaming application is still running, whether the network is available, and whether YouTube still shows the broadcast as live. The Mac sleep controls cannot diagnose or guarantee recovery from application, internet, or YouTube-side interruptions.
