Test the result in YouTube’s preview before going live. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the files’ formats and whether you want them to repeat; there is no one command that safely fits every playlist.
1. Check the video files before building the playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file of file directives and processes those media files consecutively. It is not a YouTube playlist URL. For concat demuxing, the files must expose the same streams with matching codecs and time bases. FFmpeg also warns that inaccurate durations can shift timestamps and cause gaps or other artifacts. - Put the media in a dedicated folder. Use clear filenames and make sure each file is playable. Avoid renaming extensions to disguise a format.
- Inspect the stream layout. Check whether each video has the same kinds of streams—such as video and audio—and matching codecs and time bases. If they differ, do not assume the concat demuxer can join them cleanly.
- Check durations and playback. Incorrect duration metadata can cause timestamp problems. Play the files and test the assembled output before relying on it for a public stream.
- Choose stream-copy or re-encoding. Stream-copying avoids encoding work but requires compatible inputs. Re-encoding can create a consistent output from different sources, at the cost of more processing on the PC. The right choice depends on the files and the spare computer’s capacity.
FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish a single Windows command that works for every set of files. Confirm the input properties, desired output settings, and installed FFmpeg build before settling on a command.
2. Create the playlist text file
Save a plain-text playlist file alongside the media, with one file directive for each item, in the order you want them played. For example, the structure is:

file 'documentary-part-3.mp4'This is an illustration of the concat-list format, not a complete streaming command. If you use full paths, make sure they are valid on that Windows PC and are quoted correctly for the shell and FFmpeg. Keep the playlist and media paths simple while troubleshooting.
A sequential list plays its entries in order; it does not by itself establish a reliable continuous loop. Decide whether you need one pass or repeating playback, then validate the loop behavior against your installed FFmpeg version and the actual files. Do not treat a successful one-pass test as proof that an all-day loop will behave correctly.

3. Create or schedule the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or schedule one, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Live Control Room rather than a URL or key copied from an old setup.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, or tutorial. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
The key is a credential, not a playlist setting. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to the associated ingest destination.
4. Choose output settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codec options. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For audio, it lists stereo AAC or MP3 options and advises matching stream quality to upload capacity. These are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your PC or connection. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing values.

- Start with a realistic resolution and frame rate. Do not assume a spare PC or its connection can sustain 4K or a high frame rate. Select settings based on the source material and reliable upload capacity.
- Use a constant bitrate and suitable keyframes. Follow YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen codec and stream configuration.
- Choose a transport protocol shown for the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Copy the server URL from the current Live Control Room settings and check that it matches the protocol supported by your FFmpeg build.
- Account for transcoding. YouTube says it transcodes live input into viewer formats. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured input stream.
For general connection and stream preparation, consult YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube Live streaming tips. Their recommendations cannot determine the right bitrate for an unmeasured home upload connection.
5. Run FFmpeg and verify the preview before going live
- Use FFmpeg with the concat playlist as input and configure its output for YouTube’s current server URL and stream key, plus the chosen video, audio, and transport settings.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm it is sending output without errors. Keep the PC awake, FFmpeg running, and its network connection active for as long as you need the stream to continue.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and wait for its preview. Check stream health and confirm both picture and sound.
- Test representative motion and audio—not only a static opening frame. YouTube recommends starting the encoder ahead of the event and checking the preview and stream health before going live.
- When the preview is ready and the scheduled stream is set, click Go live in Live Control Room.
For a documentary playlist, verify that narration is audible, transitions do not introduce black frames or silence, and any subtitles or other intended elements appear as expected in the test output. A local playback check is useful, but the YouTube preview is the final check of the encoded stream that reached YouTube.

6. End the stream and check the archive
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s guidance says to end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending encoder output. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream longer than that stated limit. See YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions.

Using FFmpeg changes how you send video; it does not grant rights to the documentaries, music, narration, or other material in the playlist. Stream only content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the applicable YouTube rules and rights before scheduling. YouTube’s tips also recommend testing the stream before an event. A technically healthy stream is not a guarantee that its content complies with copyright rules or qualifies for monetization.
