There is no reliable universal wattage for the extra electricity. Measure the same setup in both states to find your answer.
First, define what you mean by “streaming” and “idle”
Watching a YouTube livestream and running an encoder that sends a livestream to YouTube are different activities. Playback uses the computer to receive and display video; encoding uses it to prepare and send video. YouTube documents these as distinct streaming methods, including mobile, webcam and encoder options: YouTube’s live-streaming options.
Define idle as an awake computer with its usual background services running, but not actively playing or encoding the stream. Sleep and off are separate states, not forms of idle. Also decide whether you are measuring only the computer or the whole setup. A monitor, speakers, capture device and other peripherals add to the wall-power reading. Keep the boundary the same in both tests.

Why published streaming figures do not settle the comparison
The International Energy Agency gives a broad typical estimate of about 0.08 kWh per hour for video streaming, while noting that actual use depends on the device, network connection and resolution. That estimate is not specific to YouTube Live, and it is not the extra power a particular PC uses above its own idle draw. IEA: The carbon footprint of streaming video.
Other comparisons answer different questions. ENERGY STAR says a computer uses 11 times as much energy as a digital media player in its cited comparison, and that certified products enabling streaming use 25% less energy on average. Those are category-level comparisons, not measurements of one PC playing a stream versus that same PC idle. ENERGY STAR digital media player guidance.

ENERGY STAR also estimates that certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models through efficient components and better management while idle. Its estimate that power management on a certified desktop can save an office or home office $15 per year is not a guaranteed saving for every user or electricity rate. ENERGY STAR computer guidance.
Platform and data-center figures have their own boundaries. Google’s Display & Video 360 carbon-footprint report excludes data transmission, media production and end-user devices; its allocation of data-center energy between workload and idle power does not tell you what your PC uses. Measure the electricity your setup actually uses
- Choose the comparison. For a viewer, compare awake-idle with playback. For a creator, compare awake-idle with encoding. Do not treat watching and broadcasting as equivalent.
- Keep the measurement boundary consistent. Use the same computer, monitor and peripherals in both tests, or measure the PC alone in both. Keep playback resolution and display configuration representative of how you actually use the setup.
- Measure at the wall. A plug-in watt meter can record the computer’s AC power draw. ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement material describes AC-source measurement with an approved meter: ENERGY STAR computer test method.
- Take representative readings. Record average watts over a meaningful idle period, then repeat for playback or encoding under your normal conditions. Avoid comparing a brief startup spike with a long idle average.
- Calculate the difference and energy. Subtract idle average watts from the active average to get the added draw. Convert average power to energy with
kWh = watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000. For an always-on setup, multiply the relevant average watts by 24 hours per day and the number of days, then divide by 1,000. - Test sleep or off separately if relevant. If you could let the computer sleep or turn it off instead of leaving it awake, measure or compare those states separately. They answer a different question from awake-idle.
YouTube’s live dashboard reports stream and audience measures such as duration, concurrent viewers and watch time; it does not report the computer’s electricity use. YouTube live-stream analytics.
What this means for a 24/7 stream
For a 24/7 viewer, the relevant number is the playback setup’s average wall draw over the hours watched, compared with the same setup awake and idle. For a creator, it is the encoder computer’s average draw while sending the stream, compared with its awake-idle draw. In either case, use your own readings rather than applying a whole-system streaming estimate to one PC.

If your concern is leaving a creator’s computer running continuously, compare the measured power and your electricity tariff to estimate operating cost: cost = kWh × price per kWh. The result depends on your measured setup, duration and tariff; there is no universal bill figure.
