To make a continuous live feed, send authorized videos through an encoder such as OBS Studio to YouTube Live, or use a cloud service that runs the stream for you.
What a playlist loop does—and what it doesn’t
Looping a playlist on YouTube repeats videos for someone watching that playlist. A livestream is a separate feed sent to YouTube by an encoder. To broadcast prerecorded videos as live, you need software or a service to play the files, send the resulting feed to YouTube, and remain available for the broadcast’s duration.
For a local setup, OBS Studio can play and loop a media playlist through its VLC Video Source. For a cloud setup, a provider runs the configured stream remotely. Either way, use only content the channel is authorized to broadcast.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Create a scene and add the playlist source. In OBS, create or select a scene, add a VLC Video Source, and add the video files you have rights to use to its playlist. The source supports video and audio items.
- Set the playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the source after its files finish. OBS documentation lists this setting as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default, but check the actual settings. Choose ordered playback or shuffle deliberately.
- Prepare the scene. Add any graphics or titles you need, set audio levels, and check that the scene plays locally before sending it live. Confirm that the files are accessible and that the intended playlist order is correct.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it can send a feed to the associated stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
- Preview, then go live. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the encoder. Verify the intended watch page and access from the channel page or a mobile device; monitor picture and sound after starting. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of scheduled events and checking the preview and stream quality. See its live-streaming tips.
- Keep the local setup running. For a local OBS stream, the computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection must remain available while the broadcast is meant to run. YouTube’s setup instructions explain how to stream with an encoder; they do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Choose between a local encoder and a cloud service
| Consideration | Local OBS encoder | Cloud streaming service |
|---|---|---|
| Where playback runs | On the creator’s computer in OBS. | On the provider’s cloud infrastructure, according to the provider’s description. |
| What needs to stay available | The computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection. | The configured cloud service and stream. |
| Playlist controls | OBS’s VLC Video Source supports a looping playlist. | Gyre describes playlist-based continuous prerecorded-video streaming. |
| Main trade-off | Uses equipment you may already have, but depends on local uptime and monitoring. | Can reduce the need to keep a computer running locally; check the service’s current features, costs, limits, supported platforms, and terms. |
This is a comparison of documented workflows, not a reliability or cost test. Gyre’s site describes a cloud service for continuous prerecorded-video streams, and YouTube lists it in its encoder documentation as a tool for 24/7 livestreaming of prerecorded video. That is a vendor description, not an independent assessment of reliability.

Protect the stream from rights and policy problems
Clear every element you broadcast
YouTube requires creators to hold the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights. Check rights for the video, soundtrack, images, and other included material before adding a file to the playlist. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, a warning, a temporary interruption, or termination if the material remains. Even with a license, a rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its terms.

Review the playlist as a whole
YouTube applies its Community Guidelines to playlists. Its Playlists policy says a playlist may violate the guidelines if combining its videos into one video would violate them. Review the complete set of items, not just each file in isolation.
Don’t assume repetition qualifies for monetization
Looping videos does not guarantee earnings or eligibility for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams, and its channel-level reused-content rules cover material repurposed from YouTube or elsewhere without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization. Rights clearance is a separate requirement. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Plan for archives and ongoing operation
YouTube automatically archives streams that run for under 12 hours. Its encoder help does not promise that a stream longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete item. If the replay matters, account for that limit when planning stream duration rather than assuming a 24/7 broadcast will produce one uninterrupted replay. You can review options such as auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR in YouTube’s stream settings.
Monitor audio and video during the broadcast and check the stream from the channel page, the watch page, and mobile devices. For local OBS, also make sure the playlist source and files remain available as the stream continues.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
- VLC Video Source is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then check the available sources again; OBS requires VLC for this source to appear.
- The playlist stops at the end: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video Source. Confirm that the intended files are actually in that source’s playlist.
- The wrong video plays next: Review the playlist order and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled; set the behavior you want rather than relying on defaults.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS against the stream created in Live Control Room. Keep the key private, and preview the feed before starting the public broadcast.
- The live feed is interrupted after starting: Check Live Control Room for a warning or detected content match. Review YouTube’s live copyright guidance and confirm rights and any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder.
- The local stream stops unexpectedly: Check that the computer, OBS, source files, and internet connection are still available. A local workflow depends on all of them remaining active.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: Check the stream duration. YouTube’s cited help page guarantees automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours and does not promise a single complete archive for longer streams.
