“The Story & the Engine” is a talk-led Doctor Who episode that turns a Lagos barbershop into a stage for myth, memory and a supernatural threat. Its contained setting gives the story a fresh identity, even as its many ideas sometimes feel in need of more room.

What happens in “The Story & the Engine”?

In series two, episode five, the Doctor and Belinda arrive in Lagos in 2019. The Doctor has found a sense of community at his friend Omo’s barbershop, but a mysterious Barber takes control of the shop and traps Omo and its customers in repeated haircuts. Their stories become bound up with a strange engine. The BBC’s official episode page establishes the setting and premise; the Barber and the story-powered threat make the shop’s everyday conversations the machinery of the episode.

Inua Ellams wrote the episode, and Makalla McPherson directed it. The BBC’s feature on the episode and barbershops brings together comments from Ellams, McPherson and cast member Ariyon Bakare. Its headline—“Doctor Who is full of incredible stories, and this is what happens in barber shops”—captures the premise without needing to assign that wording to any one contributor.

Why the barbershop setting works

The shop is more than a convenient place to contain the cast. It is a communal space where people talk, tell stories and make connections; the episode makes those habits central to its supernatural conflict. Instead of relying on constant movement between locations, it lets conversation and oral storytelling carry much of the action.

That choice gives the episode a distinct dramatic shape. GamesRadar describes it as an unusual, nearly bottle-episode-like story, while Doctor Who TV also notes its dialogue-led, theatrical quality. The confinement can make the stakes feel concentrated: the customers’ stories matter because the Barber’s engine draws on them. But it also asks viewers to stay engaged with exchanges and ideas more than conventional action. The design is deliberate, though not every viewer will find it equally involving.

Myth, identity and the Doctor’s history

The episode links the stories told in Omo’s shop with myth and with the Doctor’s own mutable history. GamesRadar reads that connection as a reflection on stories and identity: the Doctor’s past is not simply a fixed record, but part of the way the character is understood and retold. That gives the episode’s high-concept threat a thematic purpose rather than making it just another supernatural puzzle.

The Lagos setting adds to that distinctiveness. GamesRadar highlights the Doctor being welcomed and treated like family, and considers what that experience means for the character as a Black man. The episode’s sense of belonging is most persuasive when kept specific to the Doctor and the relationships shown in the shop; it is not a basis for sweeping claims about Nigerian culture.

What the episode gets right—and where it feels crowded

Its originality and visual imagination

GamesRadar calls the episode unusually original and ambitious, while Den of Geek praises its poetic quality and sumptuous visuals. Those are critical judgments, but they point to a real strength in the episode’s approach: the intimate shop and the mythic scale are allowed to coexist. The story’s visual world gives its conversations a sense of consequence, so the episode does not have to abandon its contained premise to feel expansive.

The cost of fitting in so many ideas

Doctor Who TV’s counterargument is that the themes are cramped by the available time, leaving some material underdeveloped and some actions feeling superfluous. That criticism lands because the episode moves among oral storytelling, myth, belonging, identity and Doctor Who continuity. Its central metaphor is strong, but strength of concept does not guarantee that every turn receives enough space to resonate.

My view is that the ambition mostly coheres: the barbershop, the engine and the Doctor’s changing story all belong to the same idea. The unevenness comes less from a lack of connection than from a shortage of breathing room. The result is memorable and distinctive, though not every thematic thread gets a full trim.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy Doctor Who taking a formal risk—favoring dialogue, myth and a tightly focused setting over a more action-driven adventure. Its unusual premise and visual poetry make it stand out, while its crowded themes may leave some viewers wishing it had slowed down and developed fewer ideas more fully.
