Spoilers for Doctor Who Season 1, Episode 6. “Rogue” turns an 1813 society party, a shapeshifter mystery and a slow-burn attraction between the Doctor and a bounty hunter into one of the season’s most enjoyable tonal detours. The romance pays off with a kiss; what follows gives that moment a painful cost.
What happens in “Rogue”?
“Rogue” is Season 1, Episode 6, written by Kate Herron and Briony Redman. It premiered on 8 June 2024. The Doctor and Ruby Sunday arrive in 1813 for a party hosted by the Duchess of Pemberton, where guests are being murdered. The official episode page introduces a mysterious bounty hunter named Rogue as someone poised to change the Doctor’s life. Doctor Who’s episode page credits Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, Millie Gibson as Ruby and Jonathan Groff as Rogue, with Indira Varma as the Duchess.
The killer is the Childer, shapeshifters who can assume other people’s identities, but do so at the cost of those people’s lives. That threat gives the episode its mystery and danger; the party setting gives it a playful period-drama surface. The tension between those modes is part of the fun rather than a detour from the story.
Why does the Doctor and Rogue romance work?
Rogue is a bounty hunter, not simply a charming guest at the party, and his work puts him on a collision course with the Doctor before it makes him an ally. The episode lets their attraction develop through banter, suspicion and a shared response to the danger around them. The flirtation is unusually direct for the show, but it is also grounded in how these two characters test and read each other.

Engadget’s Daniel Cooper describes the episode as “a gloriously slashy and fun romp” and praises the chemistry as believable. His review also captures the viewer’s impatience: when their faces draw close, the obvious reaction is to wonder how long the show will make them wait. They do kiss. The romantic payoff is clear, though it arrives in a story that does not offer a simple happy ending.
The episode’s queerness is not limited to a wink or a tease. It gives the Doctor and Rogue an explicit mutual attraction and lets that attraction shape the emotional stakes. Cooper’s praise is his own response, and he is careful not to present himself as an authority on queer representation; the episode can be enjoyed as a queer romance while still inviting scrutiny of how it handles loss.

Does Rogue’s sacrifice earn the ending?
After the kiss, the story turns toward separation. To save Ruby, Rogue enters the trap that sends its target into an alternate dimension, sacrificing himself in the process. The episode leaves open the possibility that he could return, but it does not resolve that possibility here.
Cooper calls the sacrifice noble and well telegraphed, but also raises the “Bury Your Gays” trope: the familiar pattern in which a queer character’s story ends in death or removal after a romantic connection becomes meaningful. That concern is not erased by the kiss or by the sacrifice’s heroic motive. The episode gives the relationship genuine warmth, then uses Rogue’s loss to make the Doctor’s feelings hurt. The result is emotionally effective, but its effectiveness depends on a painful convention the story itself does not fully escape.

That tension is what makes the ending linger. Rogue’s choice protects Ruby and gives the episode a dramatic climax; the unresolved separation also means the romance’s future is withheld just as it becomes real. Whether that feels like poignant science-fiction tragedy or an overly familiar cost will depend on how much weight a viewer gives the episode’s queer-romance promise.
